Hey guys,

I need to pickup my unis for my upcoming audition rotation ADTs. I know I need the class A I guess for inprocessing/outprocessing, and the day-to-day wear will probably be the ACU? I"m a bit lost on what to get and could use some guidance.

Also, is there any point in attempting to get the new ASU? The old green unis are dirt cheap now, and I read somewhere we don't need to be in the ASU until Q4 2014, so I can't really justify spending the cash on the new ones (plus I prefer the old ones)

Also, for the purposes of branch insignia, as students we must get the Medical Service Corps stuff right?

Thanks in advance

Very few people in/out-process in As, most just go with the ACUs. I only wore my greens for residency/internship interviews. For everything else, it was either ACUs or hospital-provided scrubs.

I posted in another thread exactly what you need for your ACUs, so I'll see if I can dig it up and post it again.

If the current greens are really cheap, then I'd say grab those for now, rather than shell out the money to get the new ASUs, since you can get five more years out of your greens.

Yes, we're MSC until graduation.

Here we go:
Note: all accessories are velcro, unless otherwise specified.

ACU tops and pants
US Army tape
Name tape
2LT rank for ACU
AMEDD patch
American flag patch (non-IR, non-subdued)
Black beret
2LT rank (pin-on, nonsubdued)
Tan desert boots (no zipper, must be at least 6" boots)

You can use the uniform builder on the AAFES website if you need help. Also, for your greens, don't forget the three ribbons you get for simply breathing Army air for 45 days.

Don't forget a belt and appropriate color T-shirts.

And I know you get National Defense and Rainbow ribbons, but what is the 3rd?

I think he's referring to the War on Terror ribbon. I know we get the Gay Pride ribbon, but I think there was some funny business regarding the others and a lot of confusion as to whether or not we actually get to wear them on HPSP; I'll have to dig up the thread.

National Defense ribbon, Army Service ribbon, Global War on Terror ribbon. The basic ruling I have from the folks at OBLC and other Army docs is that all three are ok to wear on your uniform, so long as you have been active duty for >30 days (including ADTs). This may not be fully in line with the regs, but it seems pretty standard for HPSP students, and no one gave me flak over having those three things on my chest for the one hour that I was in As for interviews.

For NDSM you technically need to be on AD for more than 30 days in a non-training status, although there is a reserve clause. Either way, no one gives students grief for that one.

The GWOTSM requires that you be on AD for 180 days assigned to a command supporting the GWOT (every command fits this).

Now is anyone going to be charged for wearing these if not officially authorized? No. Bronze Stars, Silver Stars, Purple Hearts? Yes, and several have been prosecuted. Ribbons/Medals need to be "earned" and not just purchased because they make the uniform pretty.

i've heard different things from different people. if we're prior service, do we pin our previous rank?

No, you wear the rank of 2LT (or ENS) while on rotations during medical school. It was rather hilarious to see one of my classmates (I believe a prior Lt Col, maybe Major) with a 2LT bar on his chest earlier this year.

i already bought greens but i know the army's changing it's uniform policy (again). anyone know when greens will no longer be worn?

Isn't the wear out day 2014? Someone smarter can confirm. I believe that Fall 2009 is the last day they're issued but 2014 is when the new ASU is mandaory wear.

Preparing Class A's for Interviews - have some questions:
  1. AMEDD regimental crest on the right chest...yes or no? I've heard both answers from different people.
  2. After OBLC, we were told we could wear the GWT, National Defence, and Army Service Ribbons. Is this correct?
  3. Do you put the AMEDD Unit Crest on your shoulders when wearing Class B's?
  4. Since we are supposed to wear Medical Service Corps branch insignia do they make 'shinny' MSC insignia? The only ones I can find (aside from the dark ACU ones) are still dark silver. I just want to make sure I am not missing anything.
  5. Am I forgetting anything else?
I've been in school away from milmed for so long, I feel out of the loop!

The GME contacts at Madigan and Tripler told me that ACU's are fine for in/outprocessing as well as for residency interviews. They said if you want to wear class A's you can but most people are just wearing the ACU's.

Regarding the awards:

No National Defense Service Medal because: It is not awarded to: "Guard and Reserve forces personnel on short tours of duty to fulfill training obligations under an inactive duty training program."

Army Service Ribbon if you went to OBC.

Global War on Terrorism Service Medal: maybe - you must have 30 consecutive days or 60 total days in a unit supporting the GWOT. This is vague. Whether you OBC unit would qualify, who knows?

Thanks!

But what about:

I appreciate the feedback!

[*]AMEDD regimental crest on the right chest...yes or no? I've heard both answers from different people.

Yes, 1/8 inch above your nametag (centered) on your shirt.

[*]Do you put the AMEDD Unit Crest on shoulders?

Not sure, seen it both ways. I do not have the unit crest, no one said anything to me about it during interviews.

[*]Since we are supposed to wear Medical Service Corps branch insignia do they make 'shinny' MSC insignia? The only ones I can find (aside from the dark ACU ones) are still dark silver. I just want to make sure I am not missing anything.

I appreciate the feedback!

Yes, they make shiny ones (the MS part is black). Check both AAFES and Ranger Joe's.

Thanks!

Sorry, no. The pins on the shoulders are distinctive unit insignia. This is the same as what goes on the beret of the enlisted soldiers. Definitely, NOT the regimental crest. As a student, you essentially have no unit, so you would not place any pins on the epaulets of your greens.

Log in to AKO, click on My Uniform under self service. All of the ASU info is in the bottom left corner of the page.
