Hi, I am a third year med student in the HPSP program. I was wondering how possible it is to defer my army residency and do a civilian residency, if I chose NOT to get paid by the army? I plan on going into PM&R.
Let me just also say that my reasons for asking are based on family matters which have arisen that would lead me to prefer to stay near my hometown, and not because I feel army training is inadequate. Furthermore, I realize that other things in life get put on hold when I entered the military, so I'm not expecting any special treatment of my situation. I was just curious to see if I have this option if need be.
Thank you for any input.

Sometimes assignments become much easier to work if your personnel guy (what do Army guys call personnelists? detailer is Navy, right?) knows your situation. The Air Force has an "exceptional family member program". My wife is enrolled, which means the military has to consider her needs before putting me somewhere. So if your situation is such that you need to be in your hometown so you have a support network (or are the support network, whatever your problem is), let someone know and get the system working for you.

Good luck.

Hey, I'm also an MSIII in the army. According to the latest info I've heard, we can't apply directly for a deferrment. In order to get deferred to a civilian residency, you have to apply to the army programs in that particular field and not be accepted. Supposedly the army will automatically give anyone a deferrment that doesn't match, but it would be pretty risky to intentionally not match into the army programs.
