I am thinking to get a job in new york, so I have to spend one year for residency.
If I am eligible to apply HPSP scholarship in D2 through D4 for 3 years, do i have to do residency for one year in new york or I don't need to do it if I serve as an army dentist for 3 years? Anybody knows?
Thank you.

I recommend you ask this over in the Military Dentistry forums, it will get a lot more attention from people experienced in these specific matters: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/forumdisplay.php?f=178

I'm not entirely clear on your questions, but I'll try to briefly answer (but seriously, ask over in the military forum, you'll get a better one): I believe it is possible as a D2, but beyond that I'm doubtful, as 2-year scholarships seem to be the lowest they go. When you say you have to do a residency to work in New York, I assume you mean even a 1 year residency or something. Those are available in the military, though I am unsure if just regular service would count for New York's requirements. The military also has loan repayment programs for regular dentists, so you could consider that option as well (if you can't get an HPSP).

Cheers

This is what I gleaned when I considered the HPSP. I could be wrong. You should check out the military forum to get the best/most correct answers.

I think (could be wrong because I'm recalling old info here) that a 3 year commitment is the minimum.

This pertains to the Navy specifically, but you are required to do a 1 year residency before serving. This 1 year will serve as a neutral period (ie, it doesn't add on to your commitment). Also be wary about that $20,000 sign on bonus...
