I am 23 years old have about 3 years of college behind me GPA is around 3.3. I have enlisted in the United States Army but it has always been a dream of mine to go to medical school. The reason for enlisting in the army is I have almost always been a closed off person I haven't been anywhere or done anything and I felt this was a way to broaden my horizons. I also feel like if you are capable it is your duty to give back to your country and this is my way to do so. My question is have you heard of any success stories from students who go from the army to med school? Would this qualify as an ec? and how do you think admissions would look at my situation? I am army infantry leave for basic July 13th. Thanks for any replies.

Yes, briefly getting into med school is based on three things....

1. Your GPA (you are going to need a 3.5 + .....you could get in with a 3.3 but it is unlikely). So obviously you need to raise your grades, is your current gpa including classes like chemistry, biology, physics, and organic chemistry?

2. Your MCAT score....take this after you finish all your pre reqs

3. Your ECs...and yes army will look good, but you need to have patient contact. If this could be done somehow in the army, then great, otherwise you will need to volunteer somewhere or get a job w/ patients elsewhere.

Yeah, there have been plenty. You might find more of them on the non-traditional student forum.

thanks for the quick responses

USUHS medical school, half of their matriculants are people with prior service.

Prior service. Tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Accepted.

You need a higher GPA. Your service is an a plus, but it isn't a substitute for low stats.
