I have one year left in an Advertising degree at an arts university. However, I'm not a fan of advertising and would like to be able to apply to med school. I know I will need to take prerequisite science courses - can someone walk me through where I should take them? I live near Atlanta. So I could apply as a non degree seeking student at Emory or Georgia Tech. Those are the most highly ranked colleges near me. Or is it better to go the community college route? Any general advise from anyone? Thanks!

This should help you out.

I'm a Health Science grad and I took many of many of my prereqs at the local community college since I paid out of pocket for anything not associated with my degree. Some med schools are more forgiving re: CC vs a university but as far as ranked colleges go, it will not ultimately matter. Just a solid af GPA of 3.5+, kill the MCAT, get your appropriate EC's in and you will be on track.

I'm also a GA resident that switched to medicine from art (graphic design and film). I would recommend a 4 year university over community college, but it doesn't really matter where you go. Also, on my interviews last cycle it was rarely brought up that I was an art major, FYI. Make sure you get a good amount of shadowing/clinical experience/research as well as the science pre reqs

Art major chiming in! I did it, it took 6 years but I'm finally applying this year 🙂 You're better off going to a 4 year university and taking the pre-reqs there!

I had a music ed degree. I did a formal part-time post-bac program at top 20 school.

Is your art school in the southeast? Is it accredited by SACS?

Others who know more about this, please respond. Does a bachelors degree in the US need to be accredited by one of the six major regional agencies, like WASC, SACS, etc. It's not unusual to find out that some stand-alone art, film,or design schools are not. If that's the case, you may have to seek another degree.

If you are attending SCAD, then that is SACS accredited. If so, then you could fulfill your premed prereqs at a local CC. If you can afford to go to UGA or GT, then that would work, too. Be aware, that the only aid for these classes would be loans. No Pell, no grants, just loans, so a CC may be your affordable route unless you have other means to pay.
