I've heard on this forum that Howard doesn't accept white males and I found this on their admissions website:

STATISTICS ON FALL 2004 CLASS
- The average age ranged from 21 to 24
- 55% are females
- 78% are underrepresented minorities
- Class size: 83

Obviously, it doesn't say if any of the non-minority 22% is male or not but I can't see how NOT accepting white males would be legal at all anyways. Any ideas?😕

It is interesting that while you are thinking of applying to Howard, an earlier thread by an accepted student to Howard is currently thinking about transferring. Maybe you should PM him.

Unless you feel like wasting your money I wouldnt apply. You would probably have the same chance of getting into Harvard with a 16 on the DAT, but you never know.👍

location alone was a deciding factor for me. It is smack dab in the middle of DC, and traffic is horrible. Plus finding a place to live that isn't either too expensive, too far away, or too unsafe would be tough, in my opinion.

Isn't tuition very cheap though? Like 77 grand for someone out of state (not like it makes a difference since it's not a state school)?

i am not sure what the figure is but i believe howard is the cheapest private school.

if you wana get shot

Your chances of being shot are better if you go to UMDNJ (Newark) or UD-Mercy (Detroit).

Unless you were being racist and alluding to the fact your classmates are mostly minorities and THEY would be the ones shooting you, not the residents of DC.

Ever been to North Philadelphia where Temple is? DC is way more safer than Philly. I've lived in both areas. Check out this map from 2006 that lists all the murders in Philly. Pay close attention to the area around Temple. I'm not saying I wouldn't feel safe around Temple but your chances of getting shot are greater than around Howard.

Yeah, I live in New York, so Philly's pretty close and I've been there... pretty ghetto I'll agree (although I did enjoy the place, fun city).

Guys, I love dentistry SOOO much and want to serve people as a dentist SOOO much that I am willing to risk getting shot in the eye ball at Temple to become a dentist! (do admissions committies read these?)

i think you should apply!

you might count as an "under-represented minority" and get get a boost :beat:

Here is a better question.

Should I hit on the hot chicks in my class, even if they have a boyfriend?

Why is it that all the girls in my classes have boyfriends, yet they are never around, they are all somewhere else, another part of the state, out of the country, etc.

They always feel inclined to talk about their boyfriends even if I dont bring it up.

If you can answer this question then you will know the answer about applying to Howard.

The correct answer is Yes.

Temple is a great place, and yes the admissions commities from some schools do read these boards.

Damn, dude, sounds like they are singles that don't want you to know they are single. Not good.

I hear them talking about their boys to their friends, and I cant help but overhear them talking, and saying ya my bf isn't here but he will be visiting soon.
So its not like they are out right telling me they have a bf, i just hear them talking about them. But ya otherwise that does look bad.

you dont want to goto howard anyways if you get accepted there. its a very bad school and the only thing you get out of it is a dds degree. you wont get anything out of dentistry because its so bad. you will be screwed later on in life whe you start working because you wont know what your doing.

Are you speaking from experience?

Has any white male actually got into Howard? Anyone on here living proof of it. I was actually thinking about applying there, as I would be the minority.

Well, 78% are URMs; means 22% aren't, so whites most likely constitute some of that.

Either way, if you have a lot of volunteer experience in underserved communities and indicate an interest in practicing in underserved communities, you'd probably at least have a shot. I'd go for it, personally.

That is so ignorant to think that if you graduate from Howard that you will "be screwed" later in life because you don't know what you are doing. I have actually shadowed a few dentists that went to Howard and they are extremely successful. They are very intelligent and have inspired many students to pursue a career in dentistry.

my mother is actually one of the professors at howard, and first of all there are several white males per class that attend, in fact one of my best friends is a white male who graduated who is an amazing dds who just finished a gpr at bronx lebanon... secondly, it is a very nurturing environment and it is very accepting to everyone no matter what race or gender they are... also their board passage rate is becoming more and more competitive and students match at top schools because of the requirements that they do as clinicians in the program... it is primarily a clinically based institution and emphases is placed on clinical skill development... the reason why the dat scores may be a bit lower than other schools is simply because as the first historically black school it has a responsibility to accept black students who serve a vast majority of the minority populations in the unites states...

oh and 1/2 of all black dentists currently practicing are graduates of howard university... so you as a white male are encouraged to apply and pm me if you want any info....

I’m a white male and am applying to Howard. My career goal is to become a general dentist. I have a background in working with the underserved. I also grew up around the DC area and still have a lot of family there. Wish me luck!

good luck.. seriously, but ur probably wasting ur money, it's the same deal as applying to a state school being an out of state applicant. unless ur stats are great, which they could be, u might just be wasting ur money. while you are applying you might want to look at tufts! it's a great atmosphere and the professors are great. im just saying this cuz i applied to a bunch of schools last year that i thought i might have an outside shot at getting in, and no luck.

I think this will by far be the greatest strength of your app. Good luck!

no, and if you do, consider it as more of a donation than an application fee.

That's what I chalked up my app. fee to.
