most of you who are residents and attendings (or otherwise members of the asa) should've gotten in the mail recently a membership enrollment into the ASAPAC.

for more details about what this is and what they do, check here:

http://www.asahq.org/Newsletters/2006/08-06/becker08_06.html

on this forum, there is a lot of banter about what we can do to protect ourselves from the "trolls", which echoes (and probably in some way caricaturizes) the feelings of those who desire to take away or further infiltrate the scope of our practice. but, those sentiments are real, and people feel "safe" to tip their poker hands here on this forum and show you how they really feel. likewise, you can always visit the allnurses forum or the aana website to get a candid view of the real and open actions that some crna's and their organization are taking to increase their scope of practice as well as continually and actively strive to erode the line between physician and nurse clinician.

in response to the perceived threats, some members on this forum have even gone so far as to create a "private" forum to get away from those who they feel threatened by, to discuss freely ideas and strategies to prevent this from happening. while i disagree with the belief that this is the best way to address such issues (and have chosen not to endorse a private forum), i understand why some of you have chosen this route - be it frustration, lack of respect, etc. i sympathize with your motivations.

however, i submit to you that there is a far better - a far more real way - to get involved, and i highly recommend that any of you who feel that we need to protect our profession to join the ASAPAC.

it will cost you, as a resident, $20. that's it. so, instead of getting latte's at starbucks for the next two weeks, just get their regular cup of coffee instead. you'll be doing your colleagues and yourself a great thing. attendings... you can pony up whatever you think you can afford.

i encourage each and everyone of you to join. tell your colleagues at the hospital. make a committment to be a part of this organization.

thank you.

p.s. i would not submit a payment online if you do a search. the site you are directed to does not use secure-socket layers (SSL) encryption. i have paid by check directly via snail mail.

always remember:

APATHY = FAILURE and, in my opinion, you lose the right to complain if you don't participate.

get involved. it serves us all. it's only $20.

rock on, dude. it'd be nice to see us get a decent contribution from getting the word out on this forum.

You should also contribute to your state's anesthesia society PAC. They are also vital to our specialty. I have donated $40 to mine, and all of our residents combined to donate over $1600 (24 residents). If you can't give money, give time. Personally, I went with a few of our society's members and personally spoke with a congressman about the teaching rule, and also about a new bill which would allow anesthesiologists the right to have the same access to monies that CRNA's monopolize concerning medicare in rural hospitals.

The time is now.

great idea. thanks for suggesting.

i was president of my state's resident component section last yr and raised some good cash for the state and ASA PAC. I was informed at the ASA mtg in D.C. last May that it's not the amount of $$$ donated by the residents - it's more the number of residents showing support. So even if it's $5, send it in as it is greatly appreciated and noted.

you guys (and gals) are great! so far in the past 24 hours, we have a running total of:

$1,360!!!

that's amazing. as it should be clear to many of you who come here frequently, this forum reflects the often not-so-hidden real world agenda of those who seek to, quite frankly, destroy and diminish the distinction between our far greater and deeper medical training and their nurse-clinician training. and, not many of us has a lot of time outside of our professional lives to be directly involved in protecting this distinction. this is a great way to continue to have surrogate representation from those who have your best professional interests in mind.

time is clicking away on the 100 days campaign! keep up the great work!

4.20 :barf:

Thought you guys had a private forum for all the politcal BS. I got five on the other side. It will be a rough political session this go round. Ladies and gentleman welocome to the main event. Ding ding ding ding. Id bet more money was spent last year on PACs and filling politicians pockets than was spent on research done by anesthesia providers. Now im not talking about pharm or equipment companies. In talking about actually anesthesia providers in this country doing research. Anyone have any numbers?

Is there any way that those of us not in residency (lowly MS2) can contribute now?

i'm sure they wouldn't mind.

you can send contributions to:

ASA Political Action Committee
520 N. Northwest Hwy
Park Ridge, IL 60068-2573

you can send a letter with it telling them you are a med student, where you go to school, and where you heard about this. i'm sure they'd really appreciate the gesture, even if it's only like $5-10.

$150 from the kid....

$150 from the kid....

dude, you're not "the kid", you are the man!

so far, just as of this forum we can now account for a total contribution of:

$1,530!!

if anyone needs a refresher, re-read my first two posts on this thread. otherwise keep 'em rollin' in!

to everyone else who's already contribute, you rock!
