So, yeah. Hotels that are on the ASHP website and can be booked through their links are filling up very quickly. The group with whom I'm going is actually booking today just so we can still get a good rate (since we're all poor students). The hotels near the convention are pretty much booked already. 🙁

My point is if you're wanting to go, you may want to look into booking as soon as you can.

When you become as important as I am...people make these arrangements for you... :meanie:

I booked like 3 weeks ago, we're at hotel #4 on that map on the ASHP website - was the closest available even then.

My hotel better be near a golf course!

Let me know when the show comes to New York City... (probably never, too costly)

EDIT: Actually... Next year.. Las Vegas! Sign me up. I'd probably end up at the Bellagio or Venetian Poker tables for a 'guest lecture'. I wonder if my hospital would fund that.

It seems to be in Vegas every other year. I am so not happy that the one year my presence is required it's in Orlando. boooo.

Man...I was just starting to add midyear costs.... Its getting extremely expensive. At least $500+ and I'm underestimating it.

I am definitely going to be there (I have, and still do, call Orlando home).

I am curious... Is anyone going that is not a current resident, in their final year of pharmacy school, or interested in recruiting new residents?

I am beginning P2 of a 3 yr program - is there anything important I should be doing while I am there? Aside from the obvious meet and greet?

yes, yes you are. I'm sharing a <$200 room with at least 2 other people for 5 nights (6-11th), plus flying there (about $300 round trip)

Thankfully if you schedule correctly you should pay for very little, if any, of your food and beverages (alcoholic and non) while you are there.

Print a gajillion copies of your CV ahead of time so you don't waste time/money at STaples.

I'm driving a whopping 2 hours and staying at my friend's condo for free. Woooo.

As a P1 I attended a couple CE's, talked to some of the pharmacy reps (USPHS, VA, couple hospitals, etc) and picked up some freebies. I was only there 2 days though. Next year when it's in Cali and I'm a P3 I'll probably focus a little more on residencies. Not sure if that's the best way to approach MRM, but it's one person's experience.

If you are flying from NJ, then extremely underestimating. Student registration alone is almost $300 this year, I think. Then the hotel, unless you have a place to stay for free. Even the cheapest dirty motel will run you about $70/night. And the flight from New Jersey to Florida runs at least $200.

Thankfully, my job will pay for everything. And I don't even need to worry about reserving the room myself. One of the (very few) benefits of growing up. 😀

🙁

Yeah, I think I will just bring along a tent and a backpack and just camp right outside the convention center. See you all at the front entrance!!

Things I've learned having gone to 1, prepped for 1 but scrapped it at the last minute:

Some hotels are not posted by ASHP. I booked the Red Roof Inn thats right by the convention center just last week. It's cheaper than the ones listed by ASHP. Downside is I'm stuck in the smokers section of the hotel. Upside: I managed to get a two-bed room at the same rate as that of a King size for a whole week at the equivalent of a short notice.

ASHP's helper service is targeted for those trying to fly in from anywhere and everywhere. If you shop around, you can manage to shave an extra few hundred off your flight.

I missed out on a Vegas ASHP twice. I went to Anaheim as a P4 in 2006, and despite being extremely busy hunting for a residency, the much needed winddown at night is lacking. All you have for entertainment/ nightlife is Disneyland, and that 24 hour Denny's. Hotel bars do not count, though there are LOTS of hotels/ motels. If you don't NEED to go to an ASHP/ APHA at Anaheim, don't go. If you're going because you are a 6th year/ PGY1/ PGY2 having to promote/ recruit for you residency, good luck. If you are the type that needs to go out to winddown (I'm not talking about alcohol, I mean simple entertainment and something to do/see that is NOT pharmacy to decompress, unwinde) good luck in Anaheim, and I hope you like Disneyland and the mouse.

Every time I register for a pharmacy convention, I can't help but wonder, if this were to be in NYC, what would be price have been to rent out Jacob Javits as compared to city X, and the cost for the convention attendees vs. city X.
