Hello all,
Does anybody know if Howard accepts asians? I know it's considered as a minority school but I am thinking asians are not considered as a minority for dental schools. I'm asking because I'm wondering if I should even bother sending in the supplemental fee for this school. Thanks!

forum search is your friend.
No, Asians are not considered "under represented minorities" as far as higher education admissions go. Yes, Howard is a Historically Black College but that does not mean that the do not accept non-URMs. (Last year 63% were underrepresented minorities) Apply to Howard, or any school, only if you fully agree with their mission statement. Don't think that it is easy based on the average scores to get in.

this is one of those questions that goes into the hall of fame along with:

1. Whats the difference between DMD and DDS?
2. How much do dentists make?
3. What are my chances?
4. How early should I apply?
5. How many schools should I apply?
6. Why is my GPA different on AADSAS?
7. Which professional school is easiest to get into?
and 8. Can I switch to medical school after I start dental school?

I admit that was a stupid question & move on my part. I do not think any dental school is "easy" to get into based on the average scores/gpa of incoming applicants either. I also know that forum search is a useful tool and it is my mistake for posting this question. Please disregard my previous post. I do feel like an idiot!

In America, we are minorities.

In schools, we are not.

Whites are the minorities.

The best way is to contact Howard and ask them on what is defined as minority. I am quite sure they accept asians and other races to their classes, but I don't think asian is listed as minority. DP

I have a buddy who is asian (Korean) who starts at Howard in August. Good luck!

I have a friend who is Asian and Howard was the only dental school she got into!

I, on the other hand, got rejected right off the bad when I applied to Howard and Meharry. I am Asian with average stats.

a quick look at the howard facebook page shows that there are just as many asians/indians are there are african americans, or at least very close. hope that answers your question

asians are not considered to be a minority in any health care field

hey OP,

although Howard will not treat you as URM and their lower avg stats won't really apply to you (do not expect you will have a guaranteed interview because you have 3.3 and 21 DAT whereas avg is only 3 and 18 or something) there are actually good numbers of asian people attending howard.

in my adea book (which i am using to research the schools to apply to), i believe asians are the second most numbers of students in that school followed by blacks and i think there were like 20 some asian students there in the class (which is pretty good amount)

apply to Howard only if you are thinking it as any other school but do not apply because of their lower avg stats because it won't happen

Yes howard accepts asians - if not then they would be shut down. How many asians go to howard? Probably not a lot

Dentists

Native American 0.1%
Asian/Pacific Islander 6.9%
Black/African American 3.4%
Hispanic/Latino 3.3%
White/Caucasian 86.3%

actually class entered 2007 had 31 asians (22 males and 9 females), 0 native americans, 39 african americans (16 males and 23 females), 8 hispanics (3 males and 5 females) and 8 whites (5 males and 3 females)

as you can see, Howard actually accepts almost as many Asians as blacks and Asian males are almost the majority of class (1 short of 23 black females).
but as an Asian, you will not be treated as Under Represented Minority, and howard's that year's median gpa of 3.19 would not apply to your case.

i applied with 21/20/21 and 3.4 gpa and didn't even get an interview so don't think bc you have higher stat than their average DAT and gpa, you'll be guaranteed to get into that school

Brazilians are not hispanics. They speak Portuguese and were not a colony of Spain. This is pretty basic knowledge.

True. But they are Latino/Latinas, and thus grouped in the same URM category as "Hispanics".

If a race as a whole is able to pull their weight, they are not considered URM.

I'm asking because I'm wondering if I should even bother sending in the supplemental fee for this school. Thanks!

Did you apply to them through AADSAS and pay the addition cost?
