Asians: ORM= really bad news?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

did anyone else notice that he stole my phraseology??? it's clear this guy could not have thought of 'en masse' by himself!!!! (see my earlier post on like page 1)...
anyway, i forgot that he'd be too busy going out and doing other stuff, rather than studying in the library or reading a dictionary or 'memorizing vocabulary' like we asians do. this is obvious from his abysmal spelling skills.

i just had a thought: what if he's a random asian kid just trolling for fun and trying to get a rise out of all of us?!!!

yeah I stole your phraseology... I am white english is my lanuage I dont need to steal anything lol...

First off, I never said that I did not see asians at highschool functions. I was refering to the kids in my calc class, not the asian community as a whole. Those same students all attend top colleges and will most likely become successful people. I do not hold any opinions against any race in general I was just pointing out in my opinion why the asian race is so successful in the academic area and medicine to be more specific. My best friend is asian and is far from a bookworm.

I see. I was under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that you were labeling calculus-taking asians and bookworms as antisocial hermits unfit to become physicians. If you look at the wording of your original post, I think you can see why so many people were offended.
My main point was that it's a shame to think of being "nerdy" or being a "bookworm" as such a bad thing that inhibits your social life.

I mentioned earlier in this thread that I could have worded it better and I can see how it looked offensive. I only think being nerdy or a bookworm is unhealthy if it inhibits your social life. IMHO these are the docs that lack the social skills upon entering the medical profession and hopefully will learn these skills during medical school and residency. I give mad props to asians because they are the ones making it into medical school and other top professional positions in this country.

meh, wetlightning out. enough reading inane posts and wasting my time.

Look, being pc is one thing; the manner of your posts is a different thing all together. Using "you asians" or "those asians" already carries a tone of contempt so you shouldn't be surprised if people (especially asians) are downright hostile to you. A bit of advice: just say "asians".

yes you are right they are ones taking a lot of spots that could go to good whites but, my question is, will this benefit america?? If they were providing the best health care in their country they would be number 1 in the world(which we all know is not true). Thus I think they we need to encourage the people with the talent like like the good white guys who wrote all our science books into medicine.

You are truly a *****. I suggest you actually go look up nobel prize winners. In 1957 Lee and Yang received the nobel prize in physics for showing broken symmetry in a dipole. Maybe that doesn't count for you. That was just a start.

geee i wonder why most fo your science books are written by white people. Maybe because we're in america? Last time i checked, asians made up a very small portion of the american population. Correct me if i am wrong here.

Do they use mostly american books in china, what about hong kong?

Perhaps SDNtheone is a troll... perhaps he is not. Regardless of whether he is trying to stir up trouble or just a complete idiot, I believe that we should ignore his comments. I dont mind competing with those asians but, I think the county should stop letting them in en masse. I mean what benefit is it to Americans to have a bunch of Asian docs??

Within the last several days, two states (New Mexico and Arizona) have declared states of emergency due to being completely overburdened to the breaking point. But, it's not an inrush of "asians" that is the problem.

And to all, yes, it is a problem. Otherwise Bill Richardson, the bulk of whose legal constituancy is comprised of hispanic americans, would not have made such a call. The reality is that there's a big issue here.

Part of me does, but a lot of me doesn't feel bad for him... it's a lot easier feeling sympathy for him now that he's gone. Gee whiz, there are other times after you read those posts you just want to whack him upside the head. If he is for real, yeah, I guess it is kind of tough going through life that angry and missing out on what others have to offer because the color of their skin is different, but I think that it's always harder being on the receiving end of discrimination.

Is it just me or do others here feel he should not have been banned? Sure he was a little looney but, he had a few decent points. I think that eventhough he is far to the right it is nice to read a view we often don’t get to see.

1) It is too late to ignore anyone or any reply now.
2) Why do people reply to someone who is a troll (in their opinion) when they can block or choose not to read the post?
3) It takes two to tangle…I mean…tango, doesn't it?
4) How about a Royal Rumble Forum where anything goes? Some thread needs to be moved somewhere overthere beyond the horizon of Everyone?
5) What was going on in this thread anyway? The perennial relapsing iatrogenic or self inflicted ORM-URM syndrome again?
6) An oldest brother has five Vietnamese classmates, his second-son brother has five classmates who share the last name of Nguyen. What should the youngest brother expect to have? No reply is needed, thanks. It is one of very few provable facts here though.

I'm sorry but I totally disagree with you. If you read through all the posts, you would have seen clear racism. I could see if he's pointing to valid points without being a bigot, and by putting together well thought out thoughts.

However, the only thing he kept doing was acting like a total white racist person.

Yes, we asians don't have a right to complain about not being considered URM, considering the overwhelming number of us represented in the field of medicine. However, that does not give some white guy with a racist attitude, the right to tell us we need to go back to our own country and don't belong here or deserve jobs we earned through hard work.

As a 3rd year medical student, I have never posted on SDN but I have always observed the threads for information when I was in most of your shoes. I figured today I would see just for giggles if these types of threads still exist. It doesn't surprise me that these types are the most visited. As an AA applicant, I scored a 29 on the MCAT when I applied to medical school. I have completed two years of medical school, passed the boards and have completed a rotation in family practice in order to be at my stage of training. All of that to say this- everyone who has the intention to go to medical school has a fair chance. I am one for promoting merit-based reward systems. To say one race has it harder and the other has a cake walk into medical school is a far notion from reality. A system is in place that fairly promotes competition between people who are equally qualified. With that said, most people look at MCAT scores and then judge others on whether they are fit to be future physicians. Another mistake! Admissions is based on a lot of criteria and not all are academic.

Now who cares what race has more Nobel prizes. Are you serious??? I am puzzled that anyone who will be treating patients from different backgrounds actually has the idea that a race can occupy some unique role in society that is sooooo great. If any of you all are christians, follow Solomon's actions. Seek wisdom and be humble. A wise, humble person couldn't mutter such useless substance.

i didnt read through the thread lately-its been moving sooo fast, but did SDNtheone get banned or something?

Yes to both questions. He did get banned and he can recreate another username, but will most likely get banned if he starts up crap a second time. Generally happens every time with true trolls.

This thread has run its course, and I think Phil or Evo should consider closing it.

But a few last and final points.........

A. Bigotry need not be tolerated so I am glad that SDNtheone is gone.
B. Don't worry about wondering whether someone got in because of URM vs didn't get in because ORM status. People will get in if the committee likes them. Just do your best to focus on YOUR application and credentials rather then others.
C. To expand upon B, we cannot control what an adcom is thinking. We do not know the definitive way they judge applicants or what they want from a particular candidate. There is always some way to find fault with even what seems to be the most stellar applicants. So rather then worrying about how things like Race, age, or other irrelevant factors play a roll in admissions just worry about yourself.

D. Many of you who posted on this thread are already lined up for interviews, so chances are you are going to get in. So again, for the third time, concentrate on that rather then worrying about how the ORM or URM thing affects you.

When I started this thread, I honestly didn't think it would open the wound that it did... these postings have shown me a great deal about some of the people I hope to one day call my colleagues; I've seen both the good and the bad.

I want to be clear that I wasn't complaining about not being an URM, I was simply asking a question, a question that was not well thought out.

If I was Jerry Springer, and if this was the Jerry Springer Show, now would be a good time to take a moment and reflect upon what we've learned. 1. Race does matter because it matters in our minds. 2. Some people are racist jerks. 3. We all carry certain prejudices and presuppositions about other people because of the color of their skin. 4. Not all asians are good at math and science. 5. Not all asians want to become physicians. 6. We are capable of speaking fluent english (has anyone else had someone come up to them screaming loudly and slowly, "DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH?" I don't get why they're feel the need to yell)

First off, if this is in response to me. My putting things in CAPS is often just a way to emphasize, not YELL!!!!!

So I'm sorry typing on computers doesn't do justice to giving the true intent of use of something like CAPS. I personally use it for emphasis and not always to yell.

Secondly, I was not directing my comments towards you per say but those who actually WERE complaining about being ORM.

Thirdly, wasting time complaining is useless because WE DO NOT know what the ADCOMS think when they see our files. We don't know how they are going to feel one day vs. the next in determining whether we are good enough for them, or what they'll find to nitpick at our application about. People who have good credentials often get rejected, and people who you would think would have their chances shot to hell sometimes do get in. Other times, the reverse is true. But again, who's to say that a person's chances are shot to hell or not?? We really don't know what the adcom thinks when they sit and judge the applications. The only two people who've ever posted on here that did have a real idea were Rel Larkin of USF COM because he's an admissions director, and LizzyM because she was also on a committee. Outside of those two posters, the rest of us don't have any real clue what is going on in their minds.

So trying to worry about our age, sex, religion, and how it factors in to the degree you suggest is pointless. We can look at it to a small extent in terms of school A may be a largely URM based school such as HBCU's, or school b has a lot of nontraditional students. But we can't let it get to our heads, because even those schools that seem to be a shot in hell often do some very unpredictable things. That is the only thing I was trying to get across.

Again, my use of CAPS is for emphasis and NOT to yell.

You may be right about them being the majority of the newest citizens....but hispanics take the cake when it comes to the largest number of immigrants entering the US (both legally and illegally)

those are the kinds of feelings that such policies engender

as for me im against mod activism. threads should never be closed, only moved to some wasteland, perhaps the lounge or a newly created wasteland. ppl should never be banned unless they disrupt the forums, which does not equate to expressing disagreeable or politically incorrect viewpoints. silencing perspectives is the easy but not proper way to invalidate them. it does indeed take two to tango.

Honey, you may not be around anymore, but I'm going to say this only once.........

You claim Europeans don't need to steal anything.........well news flash for you:

They STOLE a hell of a lot of stuff from my own native land of India. Those crowned jewels, all the gold, and riches of India were stolen by Britishers who invaded our lands and our property. The gold and riches of America were stolen away from native Americans by Europeans too. Europeans have stolen many many many things from people of different skin color and creed. If time was to be reversed and the Britishers never invaded India, more then half the assets that were ours would still be there, a lot of the poverty issues would not be there, and many Indians would never have been dragged to foreign islands like Jamaica or foreign lands like South Africa to be used in their slave labor. So to assume that White people don't steal......hmm 🙄

I find that history teaches us that the opposite is to be true. But if you did well in history classes you'd know that one.

If you are still reading this, you coulda easily fooled me. I think you need to reassess your goals and values. This is a capitalist society, where competition and upward mobility are present. Those who move upward are those who work hard and who an adcom likes. If you play your cards right and get a seat, then you move upwards. If you don't work for it, and someone with better credentials gets in, then to bad so sad. Learn how you could improve your app for the next go around.

I'm not disputing that what you may say is so. I was just using that as an example as to why this stupid troll has no claim in saying that white's don't steal, when in fact that's all the Europeans have been shown to do in ancient history.

to turn this thread around, how bout we start revealing what kind of profession asian families are actually into.

my parents are in neither science, health or business professions. they're in journalism. my brother is in music production.

i'll hopefully be the first doctor in our family.

Although my dad is in engineering, he never pushed us into going into medicine, engineering or business. We all just chose those respective fields on our own.

Although there are Indian parents who threaten to disown their kids if they don't go into medicine, I'd say that is NOT ALL of them by any means.

Many people have gone into the field by their own inspiration and not because mommy and daddy pushed them to do so, while others have gone into different things like accounting or other business fields, much less teaching. Some have gone into research as well.

I also know many Indians who have gone into nursing rather then medicine, mostly malayalee people from where my best friend's parents live. Actually, many of the malayalee nurses that come directly from India are people sponsored by the US govt's desperate need for more nurses. Some Indians I know are also teachers in elementary or high schools.

As per other Asians................I don't think its fair to say that Vietnamese people, for instance, are over represented minorities in medicine. I'm not sure on the statistics, but where I live they are far less represented then other asian groups in the field of medicine.

Actually, most Viet people I've talked to have parents who are owners of nail salons or workers of nail salons. Some have come from severely disadvantaged backgrounds, like my friend's dad who had up to a middle school level education and no more, or a friend of hers (now in med school) who was a farmer living in a very malnutritioned state during the 70's post war era to make it out and successful as a med student now in his 30's.

It is unfair to say that ALL ASIANS are of a particular career, because it simply IS NOT TRUE!!!!!

Disclaimer: CAPS = Emphasized not yelling. Don't take offense.

On a lighter note, if you're interested in why whites (and to a lesser extent asians) have been the most dominant figures in history, you should read a book by Jared Diamond called "Guns, Germs, and Steel." It's an integrative look at how and why societies developed from a biological and historical perspective. The dude won the pulitzer prize for it, it's really good.

For anyone who cares, I'm korean, my dad has a small business, and my mom is a nurse. My brother (resident now) and I were never pressured in choosing our professions, although most Korean parents I know did and do force, or at least nudge, their kids into engineering, law, or medicine. I find the same to be true with a lot of my Chinese and Indian friends. Some stereotypes exist because they're usually right.

And as an aside, did you get your laptop allright?
