Ask drizzt anything

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Drizzt, do you come in pocketsize?

sorry if this has already been asked before since i skimmed through your thread a while ago and don't remember, but:

whyd you decide to become a physician?

The Sphero. It was a gift from my parents but I've never worn it out, and an interview seems like the perfect time. Might make for a good conversation starter.

Your parents gave you a $260k watch as a gift? Nice. I think any tourb is a bit over the top for interviews, but w/e. Cool watch, though, ppl at SIHH were pretty excited!

I occasionally wore the datograph perpetuals on interviews, I guess. I'm not much into complications; those two are the only complicated watches I own.

Bc it seemed interesting.

Idk, he has all the knives, but I fight pretty dirty, so who knows.

How did you handle studying for MCAT, doing apps, going on interviews, possibly retaking some science courses(?) while working in IB?

I did a postbac in which I only worked part-time.

Someone might have asked this already, but how did you study for the MCAT?

Same as everyone else, TBR + AAMC.

I didn't do anything most people on SDN don't regularly do to prepare for exams.

Cool thanks. Also, did you consider vascular surgery instead of IR? If so, what made you choose IR over VS? I am interested in both..

Nope, I'm not interested in patient management and i hate clinic. I want to focus on procedures, IR is the closest to that of all the specialties.

How much do you see physician salaries will go down because of obamacare?

hey what r ur thoughts on urology? esp. compared to rads...i understand you may be biased, but curious nonetheless.

I like urology, it was #3 on my list of specs behind IR and ortho sports/med.

A lot of my friends and fam are in the field; it's great. I did a uro sub-I as a m4, seriously considered it.

Ok thats good to know. Thank you.

How does one obtain the large amounts of money mentioned in this thread?

You said you wanted to accumulate 100million dollars before you retire. What job do you have/want to generate millions per year?

Consulting/medical device/private equity/vc etc. read the rest of the thread. Investments will obv play a large role.

Whoops, just remembered you're rads. General than specialization? Sorry for sounding like a noob, but I don't have a clue in this, just curious.

You like to talk about money a lot.... Was $$ the major reason you went into rads?

Not the main reason; I went into it for the reasons I just described 5-6 posts ago

If I was in it for the money I woulda just kept my old job.

drizzt,

thanks for making this thread. interesting to hear your comments/story. you are OBVIOUSLY gifted. i think that people reading this thread should keep that in mind. i mean, >20 publications? a 40 mcat? a full ride? clearly, you have a gift (or gifts). you're highly atypical--even among the medical crowd. at any rate, i'm glad that someone bright like you is going into medicine, especially after having a more lucrative opportunity previously. there just aren't many people like you out there anymore. i hope you can make your medical device/research/med-business goals happen.

good luck (not that you need it).

drizz,

is the time, cost, and headaches of a second app cycle worth not having to go to a safety medical school?

Hey Drizz,

What study materials do you recommend for me to go over this year so my first year isn't as traumatic? Any study materials you found useful?

I have a pretty good memory and have no problem retaining information and will gladly give up a few hours a week this year so I have a few more to spend with the people around me next year.

What is a safety? DO?

Don't pre-study. If you abs have to, go over BRS physiology.

Current supplements:

Molecular Nutrition X-factor advanced
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard
Optimum Nuttition Micronized Creatine Monohydrate
Optimum Nutrition Hydroxymethylbutyrate

I've heard people slam creatine supplements saying they can eff w/ your kidneys, predispose you to dehydration, make you fat, etc... Is this misinformation? Any shred of truth? Whats the purpose of taking the stuff?

Nah, the safety data on Creatine is really solid. It's important to drink at least 64 oz a day of water while taking it, but I drink easily 2x that so nbd. The knock on Creatine was water retention and GI side effects (diarrhea) but the new Micronized formulations of it don't seem to do that. I've probably taken it for 4-5 years with no issues. Creatine gives you just a bit more energy for anaerobic exercise (weightlifting). It lets you punch out that extra 1-2 reps and can help get through plateaus. Basically you need to lift heavy to reap its benefits, though. I started this supplement regimen about a month ago. I was supplement (except protein) free throughout the spring and summer. In that month I've added about 6 lb of lean mass and made some pretty significant gains including breaking through some significant plateaus (bb military x 8 205 -> 235, dl x 8 355 -> 375, bb curl x 8 115 -> 135). I think the Creatine had the biggest contribution here but that's a nice (and safe) supplement regimen, IMO. I'm bulking pretty cleanly, at maintainance + 500 kcal.
