Ask drizzt anything

Please tell me you are in an elective right now and not neglecting your patients. You do know that a person in the midst of residency has responsibility for patients, right?

Good trolls who post in someone's AMA thread should do their homework to keep up appearances of being actual residents.

As a resident, I have time to play online occasionally. I don't have the time, nor the immaturity, to create a thread about myself and check it every 3 minutes.

Yet you have enough time to come here and complain about this thread. Can I get you some peanut butter to go with your jelly?

Lol you want to save up at least $100M before you retire? What kind of lifestyle requires a yearly post-tax income of $1.5M?

This thread is not helpful because the vast majority of us do not have the same goals/qualifications that drizzt has. It's more of a self-glorification thread than anything...

Well I, for one, welcome our new radiology overlord. Drizz, why do you have so many haters?

Mine, obv.

I wouldn't expect the average person to have my goals/aspirations.

Idk, I guess it's in people's nature to hate; I'm just here to give a lil advice, have a good conversation, and hopefully amuse a few people.

To the haters; if you don't like it you're certainly not obligated to read it.

Btw to the weightlifting ppl, I started a cycle of optimum's new micronized CMP today; it's a lot easier to take than the stuff I'm used to; 4 day load upcoming, I'll post results later.

[srs] whats your take on stronglifts 5x5 for someone who is new to weightlifting?

[srs] whats your take on stronglifts 5x5 for someone who is new to weightlifting?

I think 5x5 is a great workout for a beginner; the key is to find the correct weight. My recommendation is to use your 5 rep max and move up 5-10 lb per week.

My current routine is a modified 5x5

Week 1: all at 8 rm
M: 5x5 flat bb, incline db, smith db, bb bent over row, pull-ups
T: 5x5 squat, dl, leg press
R: 5x5 supersets, bb curl/crushers, db curl/overhead tri, preacher db/rope tri
F: 5x5 db military, db shrug, smith military, bb shrug

Week 2:
Same exercises except 2x15 @ 75% of weight.

Week 3:
5x5 except increase all weight by 5-10 lb

Week 4:
2x15 but increase all weight 5-10 lb

Rinse/repeat for 12 total weeks, then switch workouts.

Right now I'm following the plan from stronglifts website. It seems a little silly since they want you to start with basically the bar then add 5lbs / workout...but I'm gonna stick with it and see how it goes. Your program looks pretty solid though.

I think you should increase the weight to as high as possible for 5x5.

As someone who, I assume, exercised fairly regularly before M3 and M4, how physically draining did you find the clinical years? I've always trained 4x/week and really like that type of schedule. Would lifting 4x/week be reasonable during M3 and M4?

It's hard during surgery or hard rotations in residency, but I've gone 2-3x/wk min during med school and residency.

If I have the choice between your med school and Hopkins, and assuming I want to pursue a competitive specialty, what do you recommend?

Depends on your goals; I didn't apply to Hopkins so I can't comment on their med school from personal experience. I didn't because I didn't want to spend 4 years in Baltimore, so that's certainly something to consider. I've heard that it's a pretty malignant environment, as well. That being said, certainly their students match well, so that's a plus. Ultimately given cost and location would probably be a bigger factor to me. Given the ability to go back in time, I've said before I'd probably have chosen other schools over my own but Hopkins wouldn't have been one of them.

Thanks for the response. I think I figured out your name, btw. I don't know if you care.

No worries, lmk if you have more qs. I've met a lot of people on here so I'm not that surprised. Just don't want info posted in a public forum.

sry if this has been asked already, but what do you think are the most effective supplements for gaining muscle mass? (Besides protein and creatine)

The best supplement is to stop having protein and creatine and just get your cals with whole food. True story.

Thoughts on wearing a Jaeger-LeCoultre to an interview? Too flashy?

I have the same question. My normal dress watch is an automatic citizen with a black face and gold case . My new dress watch is a black faced steel case manual wind Jaeger-LeCoultre, my physician mentor gave it to me as a gift for the interview season, it's nothing too fancy. It was a watch he bought back in the 80s when he got his residency.
Simple 36mm dial with script name, but it doesn't have the big JL logo, so I think it is more understated elegance.
Stick with the entry level citizen, or go with the JLC

2 seconds playing Google Detective and I did too. I was not impressed by your choice of ties in the few pictures there were of you.

For lifting, I've known people who went from predominantly high reps with lower weight 4x per week during the first two years to high weight low reps 2x a week during the tougher rotations of 3rd year with great results. One or two reps with maximum weight until you are fried can take you about 10 minutes, leave your limbs feeling like wet noodles for the next couple of days, and you will need the next 3-4 days to recover from that anyhow. Most of 4th year you will have time to go back to longer workouts. While on rotations always use the stairs for a bit of cardio, and try to eat lots of lean protein. But no, I think during the surgery, OB and inpatient medicine rotations 4x a week workouts might not be realistic.

Unrelated but just wanted to send drizzt some positive vibes. He's been very informative and helpful at SDN. I also see that he is quite intelligent and knows how to focus on succeeding at his goals. Nothing to fault him on in that.

Good luck to you drizzt! I'm a fan. 😉

I'm not a big fan of supplements other than protein and creatine, with a few exceptions. The supplement X-factor which uses arachadonic acid has been pretty effective in my experience.

How much time do you have to watch sports (stuff like NFL or NBA) on TV during med school?

Thanks man will probably go get it today. I've been hearing a lot of positive things about EFAs lately

I'd rock the jlc for sure, if someone asks about it it might even be a nice story!

Unless I'm on sat/sun I'll spend a lot of the wknd watching football and that's been true in both med school and residency.

I had really good results from them, I gained about 20 lb lean muscle the last six months before med school and just used AA, protein, creatine.

make sure you eat like 3K calories.

This is also something I had reservations about. Over the summer I lost a LOT >40 lbs of weight, and I still want to lose about 30 more before I get to my goal weight. Am I still supposed to eat at a calorie deficit even if I'm lifting? Right now I only eat about 1500 cals / day and I'm usually full all day...I honestly can't fathom eating double that.

Do not just double your cals willy nilly. You will get fat. Ask yourself if u want to bulk or cut. If it's bulk then slowly raise your cals (100-200 a week) Until you start getting good consistent strength gains (do not go for gains on the scale, that can often be misleading). If you wanna cut 30 more pounds you can still lift, you just have to be more careful about recovery time. You won't make super great strength gains on a calorie deficit but you can definitely make some.

Idk if you're talking to me or the other guy, but I'm between 6' and 6'1 and about 215 and am almost a perfect size 44 or men's large.

As for diet, I eat clean with 50% protein 30% carb. 20% fat at about 3.5 kcal per day which is just below maintainance. Right now I appear to be essentially staying in the same weight range (- 5 lbs or so in residency) but am making good strength gains on my upper body lifts (not trying to lift very heavy legs, I spend too much time on my feet to be really sore).

That's what I thought. I'll stick with what i'm doing thanks.

You need to figure out what your maintainance calories are. If you're looking to lose weight. set your daily intake slightly less than maintainance and lift.

My guess is that your actual caloric intake is > 1500 cals a day. Try keeping a very strict three day log with everything that you eat or drink, then use a reputable calorie site to calculate what your actual calories are.

My daily intake is typically 4-6 scoops protein (560-840 calories), 6-8 cups skim milk (480-640 calories), 4 chicken breasts (1200 calories), granola (200 calories), cauliflower or broccoli (100 calories), 1 lb lean beef ( ~1000 calories). I am totally ok with eating the same food every day unlike some people.

Are you one of those guys who admires himself in front of the mirror at the gym?

Nope. I've been tracking my calories ever since I started losing weight over the summer. I'm always around 1500 now. You eat a lot lol.

Well you aren't going to gain muscle eating 1500 calories a day.

thats my point! I still want to lose weight, so I'm assuming I need to keep a calorie deficit. If I eat as much as 2500 - 3000 cals / day, I'm afraid that I'll just get fat again instead of gaining muscle.

You need to figure out what your maintainance is for your body weight and activity level. There are plenty of calculators online. Then just set your calories about 2-300 below maintainance. Also make sure you intake at least 1g protein per lb of body weight.

Alright I'll give it a try. Thanks

this thread has been very amusing and depressing at the same time. never realized how much of a bamf you were, outside of being a radiology superstar.

definitely going into IR? do you think you'll be tapping into your previous life experience with your MBA+etc. and do something with the business side of medicine in the future? could invent some flashy(judging by your collection of watches...) new catheter or wire...will we be asking techs/nurses for a "Drizzt" in the forseeable future?

Yeah I'm pretty set on IR; hopefully I can invent something or find someone who does and make them an offer they can't refuse! 😉

Any tips on how to prioritize your time so you don't waste away your life watching sports on TV? lol seriously though... also I loved the drizzt books back in the day. good stuff.

I just don't turn the TV on if I have something to accomplish... I don't watch anything except sports on TV which helps.
