Hey everyone -

Not sure if there is a thread on this already, I couldn't find one.

I have been trying to schedule a couple of the interviews I've received far enough out to give other programs in that area a chance to hopefully invite me.

Is is appropriate to, if it is coming closer to the interview date at a program and I haven't heard from another program in that area, to email the program coordinator and let them know I am really interested in their program and will be in the area for an interview on so-and-so date?

I just would really like to avoid flying places twice.

Thanks

I think it's appropriate and have heard of people doing so successfully.

Email the secretary and tell her why you are interested. It does work =D

I e-mailed 2 program coordinators earlier this week, one rejection Friday and no news from the other (to be fair, they had already rejected me)
I e-mailed one program yesterday I was formally wait listed at with a letter of interest / in the area notification and she gave me a date near the date I was going to be nearby (required some rescheduling of another one, but you sometimes have to just make a choice)
I'm sure we all remember the Wake Forest fiasco when we were applying 4 years ago (for those who don't remember, Wake Forest apparently put gobs of people in an interview pile but didn't actually inform anyone, if you called you simply got one).
So it may expedite your rejection e-mail, but it probably doesn't hurt and if you are formally wait listed it probably helps.
