Hi. I am still confused about dental assisting. I have heard you can get training for it, does it mean you still need to go to school? I attend school right now, and I do not see how I can go to dental assisting school while attending my school right now. So I was wondering if I should ask the doctors if I can get dental assisting training if that is possible? Can someone here help me with the process of dental assisting. Someone who has done dental assisting before, and has an idea of how to get into dental assisting? and of course, how and what to ask the dentist?

yes. someone please supply information! I have found an opportunity that I would love to take advantage of. How does one 'become' a dental assistant?

I am currently an orthodontic assistant, and I walked in with no experience or training at all, other than shadowing at other offices. The orthodontist I work for paid for me to have an online assisting course that I just worked on a couple hours per week. Also, he started out by letting me practice on typodonts or patients that were personal friends of his. I think that your best bet is to look for brand new dentists or specialists, as they are less likely to have established protocol that would prevent you from getting trained properly. Usually newer, younger dentists are a bit more open-minded as well, in my opinion.

I will say that it took me several months to fall into this position. I know that I handed out or faxed in 80+ resumes to various offices, and even offered to go quite a ways out of town for certain positions. Luckily, the place I am at now happened to be close to my house and pays well, but I think the key is to keep your mind open and not turn down great opportunities that may not be exactly what you expect.
