It depends.
I pay my associate 35% production. He is 51 years old and was my mentor before dental school. I pay him 2-3% more because he manages the staff at the office he works in and oversees other duties. I rarely go to that office, maybe once every 6 months. At this point in his career, he is likely to retire at my office.... he is an empty nester and lives 5 mins from the office. So the deal is mutually beneficial.
The typical associate just goes to work, treat patients, and goes home after - with no other responsibilities to care for.
