Hi all,

When does yield protection by schools typically happen? Pre-secondary or pre-interview (but post secondary)?

I am interested in a number of schools that I am worried I would be yield-protected at. What are some strategies to prevent this?

In particular, I am interested in U Miami, Jefferson, and Wake Forest for different reasons.

I think by definition, it happens at the offering acceptances stage because yield is #matriculants/#offers. More realistically, it begins post-secondary (gotta get them $$$). After that, it depends on each school in regards to how they allocate interview resources. Some schools offer tons of II's in comparison to seats available, while others offer comparatively few II's.

Most schools do not screen for secondaries. Once your application is complete, schools that do not believe you are a good fit will not offer you an interview. I received IIs from >80% of the Top 20s I applied to, but below the Top 20s, my II rate was lower than 50%. You can avoid "yield protection" by communicating clearly in your secondaries why, specifically, that school appeals to you. Most schools have either a "why us?" prompt or a prompt for any additional information you'd like to provide.
