So last week, during my interview with a lab PI, who is pretty young, I noticed she was being really flirty and stuff. It was pretty awkward for me, and I didnt know how to respond other than smiling and saying yes every other minute. I dont think I have ever seen someone so happy and nervous at the same time, and I kinda felt embarassed. It didnt help that she was from my university. Anyways, do you guys think it is advisable to take the job in this lab, now that I have been offered the position? Could it be beneficial in terms of LORs? Thanks a lot!

Are you sure she wasn't just being nice and kind to you but your vivid imagination made it out to be much more ? :laugh: I can't count how many times have I heard from men that someone was being really flirtatious with them, only to find out the woman was simply being kind and lively.
 
I think getting involved with a PI would be fraught with danger. Post doc-post doc and PhD student-PhD student romances are bad enough and often end badly. You might have been misunderstanding how she was acting, also.
If you think this has potential as a romantic thing, I would try to get into a different lab...that way you don't have to worry about a conflict of interest.

btw somehow i highly doubt that this PI is actually interested in a pre-med.
she might just have been very happy that someone is interested in working for her.

how about you visit her lab again.
and instead of just saying a string of "yes"s, actually hold a conversation, and get a better feel for whats there.

She is not a typical PI. She doesnt have a PHD. I am positive about her advance, I am mature enough to know when someone is flirting. It was pretty obvious; I dont want to go into the details. I am visiting again, to make sure that the lab is a good fit for me.

There's no way in hell I plan on "getting involved" with her; not only is that perverted (I mean come on, now) but as you mentioned there would be a huge conflict of interest. God, I cant imagine dating the person I do research with. I have always rejected advances from girls in college so far (not because I'm gay or an a** but cause I have more important things to worry about) and this was only special because I thought her "liking me" would lead to an amazing letter. In other words, I would just be using this to my advantage in a nonphysical way.

Umm, you sound like a very romantically inexperienced person. You can't possibly have the maturity level to tell if she's actually flirting with the intent for romance if you always shot girls down.

also, the whole "having an relationship jeopardizes ability to do well in school" is the biggest myth ever. a healthy relationship promotes emotional wellbeing of both people and allow you to do better in school.

but make sure you ask her before getting started on the research if she'll be able to write you a reference letter when the time comes, and if she'll be supportive towards.. i donno.. your goals in getting a pub, poster, presentation or what not.

a lot of the times we go with the PI we think likes us (platonically, as people), but then we wished we'd been clearer in the beginning about our goals.
 
also, its somewhat perverted that you titled the thread "attracted to PI?" and mentioned fantasizing about her and then followed up with "i have no intention of getting involved" lol. kinda perverted if you ask me.

I was only entertaining drizzt. BTW, are you desi? Or did you do a google search on my name? Anyways, if you are cognizant with the Mahabharata, you know it is very unethical and a huge sin to do what some people on this forum are suggesting. Anyways, mythological references aside, the point is, the whole reason I am even considering staying in the lab is the LOR. I need to get into my dream school. I dont care if that results in being a brahmacharya.
 
PI liking you doesn't mean **** but that you are going to be their b*tch and will have a hard time leaving that lab. ask them for a reference letter to another lab, they will make sure they are slow to write it.
 
In order to get a good LOR, I think you need to be more worried about doing your job in the lab then whether or not your PI has a crush on you. I still wonder if you misread some signals, but even if she was flirting, I think she'd be professional enough to not let that kind of thing influence her when she writes you a letter 2 years from now.

There's nothing wrong with being a brahmacharya.

But I just think you're being incredibly naiive about the way you're perceiving her "signals". You have never held a significant romantic interaction with a female, and you're of the impression that several women have come on to you. I do doubt that this has been the case. Rather, women have likely taken to your shy personality and tried to initiate a jovial interaction, to see if you'd lighten up.

Yes, I am a desi. But I do feel that you'd be a hypocrite to be so righteous especially if you've actually written "attracted to PI?" as the title of this thread.

So lets gather and review. You got a job acceptance, the PI looks like Nicole Kidman but you don't want to hit it because it is "perverted" and you have experience turning down hot girls. Are there any pics of this said PI?

lol... some people said girls are like that.. and I cant agree more..

in my o chem lab, the lab asistant is so friendly to everyone... no one would think she is not flirting and she is crazy hot... + she has a boyfriend 😛... so no she aint flirting.. that's how girls are... same thing with ALL the girls in my english class...lol... they are all the communications major people... non-pre-med-smart people and very friendly... I swear to god this girl always sat next to wherever we went or stayed in my group for all activites semester long... hehe.. good thing I didnt make a move one her...lol.. her bf is a wrestler...hehe... but i had my experiences till then and I knew she was just one o'dem extra friendly chicks..
