I remember as a third year during OB/GYN orientation the attending in charge asked a group of about 15 of us "How many of you want to do OB/GYN...wait, better question, how many of you know that you do NOT want to do OB/GYN". I promptly raised my hand and looked around. I was the only one with my hand in the air while everyone stood there awkwardly. She asked me what I wanted to do and I quickly responded, "pathology". You know what, the rest of the rotation she would pull me aside and give me little talks about gyn path. (I actually ended up in radiology eventually)
I don't think I ever once had an attending say anything negative about my field of choice. In fact, quite frequently during my transitional year I have had attendings say they wished they have of gone into radiology.
That said, IM and surgery residents (and for some reason pulm fellows...they are the worst) quite often have something snarky to say.
