Hey everyone. i'm new to this site. anyway.................... i was wondering what an attending was. any info will be helpful.
THANKS

It really refers to the academic staff pathologist.

Though on this site some folks who are private practice pathologists use attending in their identifier because the site does not have anything really appropriate for them.

Actually it refer to comes from the title given to a primary physician in charge of a patient. The Attending physician verses a consultant or assistant. As in verb to "attend to", meaning 'To take charge of.' However, it is not used to separate from consultants.
Every full licensed physician 'attends' to something, at least in theory....

I'm just an attending of glass slides.. :meanie:

(yeah I edited it, to make it clearer)

just to be clear to the original poster, attending is a term used in all fields of medicine, not just pathology. like the others have said, it refers to the fully-trained physician who ultimately is signing off on a case. the term gets somewhat sloppy when talking about consultant versus primary doctors. i've definately heard the term "attending cardiologist" used, when the cardiologist is consulting for a hospitalist on a given patient. for pathology in an academic setting, it refers to the physician who is ultimately responsible for rendering a diagnosis. if you look at a pathologist's report there's usually a line at the bottom saying something to the effect of, "I, Dr. X attending pathologist, sign off on all of the work for this case and have provided the final diagnosis." the "sign off on all of the work" part is because attending pathologists rarely provide the gross description for a case, thus they are saying they concur with the gross description provided by either the pathology assistant or the resident physician. hope this info helps.

this is an attending:

Known in ancient Scandinavian as the "Grue", they have plagued medical students and resident alike for centuries often eating particularily unruly ones in moments of rage. Although they have been known to snack on medical students and even premeds, their primary source of sustinence is fermented beverages and sausage sandwiches. Often if you offer a cold refreshing fermented beverage to a Grue/Attending, they spare you or even might reward your loyalty.

I did for awhile. Lately I haven't been as inspired. I guess I need more drama in my life. Too bad I deleted all those old lounge threads I had.

Maybe I need to create a new account and start trolling around, that could be fun.

LADoc00, I'm anxiously awaiting your contribution to the "Interview Attire?" thread up in the ERAS section.

Yaah, if you troll, we'll find you. May I be so bold as to suggest a handle of PsychoPath, PathoLogical or something else wild and crazy..
