As you all are working diligently on the vmcas application for this cycle, I wanted to let you all know (and clear up some confusion) that Auburn CVM is increasing its OOS spots from 10 to 38 starting this cycle.

The class size is increasing from 90 to 120 overall, benefiting OOS applicants. More info is available here.

Good luck c/o 2015 hopefuls!!

And you'll get brand new classrooms and, by the time you're in clinics, A BRAND NEW SMALL ANIMAL HOSPITAL!! (jealous!)

I can't wait for the new classrooms to be built. 👍

Thank goodness we only have to endure one year of being locked in that dungeon they call a classroom. It is going to be very nice to get windows 🙂 and I can't wait to see how the new SA clinic turns out... looks like it is going to be really nice.

i didn't think the classrooms were bad at all. the chairs are A LOT nicer than the other schools i visited and the others didn't have windows either. and the fact that there are speakers throughout the entire classroom so you can hear really well from any location in the classroom. but i am excited for the new classrooms b/c i like the layout and design of them. and the plans for the new SA clinic look incredible!

Who else is going to be sitting in the front? anyone...anyone? guess I'll be the only dork huh? lol

i dunno if i'll be sitting in the VERY front...but we will see! you like sitting in the front, jenna likes sitting in the back...this puts a strain on the safety trio! lol

ok, I don't mean the very front row...but towards the front. I'm less likely to go to sleep there. lol

Rileyroo, I didn’t mean to come across sounding so ungrateful…. sarcasm never comes across right in text. I am very excited about classes starting, windowless room and all! I don’t think I’ll be sitting upfront though… have fun wolfpack 😀 I think I’m going to try and get a seat on the row that has the aisleway in front of it so I can have lots of wiggle room. Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your summer. See you in just a few short weeks.

i just didn't want those applying this cycle to read that and think "i'm not applying to a school that has dungeon classrooms" when they aren't dungeon-like at all (to me at least) 🙂

edit: i know you weren't trying to come off as being ungrateful, no worries 🙂

Definitely see your point. For everyone applying this cycle Auburn is AMAZING! And its just about to get even better... to top off the recently built LA facilities, we are getting new SA facilities and new classrooms!!! Not to mention the class size increase and number of seats that will be available for OOS.

Good luck 2015 hopefuls... look forward to seeing you at AU next year! 😀

I totally second what AUgirl said....Auburn is frickin awesome! I just wish they had a big sib program. Maybe it can be started in 2 years or so...I would like to start it up for the class of 2015, but they're going to be much larger than my class so I don't know how that would work.

I think we could start a big sib program... wouldn't hurt to try. Everyone in our class could take more than one little sib or get some of the upperclassmen to help. We have a whole year to get things worked out and put it into action. Could pitch the idea to Dr. A during orientation.

Sounds like some exciting things are happening at Auburn's Vet school. It's great to read that they are opening up more out of state spots as well.

I would love to apply to Auburn, but being out of state the tuition is so high (4x my in-state option). Any advice on how to keep your debt from jumping up so high? Especially any out-of-state students...are there many scholarships available?

Hi Lemming! I'm a contract (IS) student at Auburn so I can't give much insight as to keeping debt as low as possible (i chose IS over OOS b/c of the terrifying tuition). However, I have friends who just graduated from Auburn who said there are lots of scholarships that a large percentage of the students obtain after first year. I don't know how much of a dent it'd make in OOS tuition as I don't know the totals in scholarships available, but it's definitely something worth looking into.

As far as I know, Auburn doesn't offer scholarships to incoming students like some other schools do. Maybe someone else can chime in with more detailed info and perhaps wolfpack will give you some insight as an entering OOS student 😀

I was looking the other day and found a nice sized list of scholarships that the school offers. However, I'm not sure how one goes about applying for these, or the criteria you have to meet in order to be eligible.

If you find out and first years are eligible pass along the info. It would be much appreciated.

will do! btw, I don't want y'all to think that I have some sort of insider information. I just went to the Auburn website (general not the vet med site) and searched for scholarships and the list shows up along with the scholarships that other colleges at Auburn offer.

Thanks. I will go check the web list out. If you did have some insider information we would just expect you to share it lol 😉 As I was packing today, I found some notes I took at April orientation that said we could apply for some scholarships after first semester so maybe we will get some more info about them at orientation.

Hello Tigers ... great win tonight, hope you were able to catch some of the game?

Question for y'all, what do you think of the faculty? Are there areas that are particularly strong and areas where there needs to be a bit more attention?

Would love to hear how things are going. I'm sure it's midterms time, so good luck!!

we are slammed right now so there might not be much activity on this thread for a while, but i just wanted to answer your question really quick to the best of my ability.

i have been extremely impressed with the faculty at AU. i think we have the best team of professors for both anatomy and histology that anyone could ever ask for. our parasitology professors are great and one of them is absolutely hilarious - even though it's more memorization than i could've ever imagined, parasit is one of my favorite classes.

i can only answer for first year (and first semester at that) but maybe sofficat can get on here and give you a better answer reflecting all of the professors as she's a 4th year. however, she is currently trying to survive a very demanding ICU shift right now so she might not be on here until she gets some sleep. 🙂

the only area that i could think of that "could use some attention" is that one professor seems to grade somewhat subjectively (based on students comparing their grades and answers for the first exam), but he is very easy to talk to and if any student felt their exam was graded unfairly, i have heard they were able to talk with him in his office and work out the situation.

i hope this helps! 🙂

Thanks for taking the time to post especially when you're super slammed rileyroo

i get the feeling that Auburn is an overall, "friendly" place ... glad to hear that the faculty are supportive

anyway, please don't let this thread (or me) detract from your studies ...

Thanks again!!

quick question and it may be a silly one. Are the added OOS seats going to make it more competitive for the ISers? I ask because I am applying as IS. What are you guys thoughts?

No because they aren't decreasing the number of IS spots. The same number of IS people will apply for the same amount of IS spots

increase in # of OOS has no affect on the # of IS spots. IS will remain the same, they are just adding OOS spots which will help pay for the new Small animal clinic & teaching hospital and new educational section (classrooms). good luck 🙂

I've applied to Auburn this year (for c/o 2015). I would love to attend if I get in... It's actually my only OOS application. If I'm not mistaken, Auburn has a great avian medicine program.

Yeah they have a raptor center there. You get to work on the eagles that fly around the stadium before the football games 🙂

Working with raptors at Auburn would be a dream come true!

at the vet school there are TONS of opportunities to work with the raptors. one of the clubs is a raptor on-call program and the night you're on-call they call u in and you get to assist with the cases. i'm not an exotics person, but a lot of my classmates are (and even non-raptor people too), and they do the on-call program and love it.

they come to the classrooms a lot and announce the different opportunities, it's really easy to get involved with these programs.

our raptor rehab center is pretty awesome...they also do raptor releases at different times and you (along with the public) can attend those.

What about the Canine Detection Training Center, are there opportunities for students to get involved in that?

Okay, I just realized that Auburn just started making students have tablets this year. What are current students thinking about this? Helpful?

Also, I'm trying to find out more about Auburn, and I can't find very much on clubs or organizations. Any info would be appreciated!

i don't have any helpful information regarding the program, but they do an interesting demonstration/informational session at open house. sorry i can't be of more help.

for the tablets...they took some adjusting at first since it was the first year they're required. i'm typing this on mine right now as i print of cell phys notes. 😀 it will probably be a love/hate relationship. i love having everything so completely organized and in one spot...with the option (but not the requirement) to print things off and study on paper. they back up to a server daily so if yours crashes, you can access your notebooks (all compiled in one note) from any computer on campus or you can call the IT guys and they'll bring a replacement for you to access all of your study material while they work on yours.

three things i LOVE about the tablets (and i was completely against the requirement at first):
1. recording lectures in one note while you take notes...when you play it back it highlights the things you wrote at that specific point in the lecture.
2. being able to insert pictures into notes directly (especially helpful for histo)
3. ORGANIZATION!!!

as for the clubs and organizations, although the contact information and specifics aren't located on the website, if you let me know which ones you're interested in, i can either provide you with more information or contact info for the officers in charge of those orgs so they can provide you with a better description!

i hope this was somewhat helpful, if you have any additional questions or specific questions please don't hesitate to ask!

Even though Vet school is still so far away, so far Auburn has been on the top of my list. hahaha
I didn't know what to think about the required laptops, but after reading your 'review' of them, riley, they seem pretty useful. I like the whole thing with the it saving your notes at specific points of the lecture.

I'd like to hear some more about Auburn. I love reading about the clubs but I haven't really found much about that yet..
