Hey everyone,

I need some input on this dilemma. It's been about 5 years since I took Gen. Chem and my first time around I didn't do so hot. I got a C in it. When I spoke to admissions at one of the schools I applied to last year and asked if I should go back and retake the course; the reply was that I should probably focus on higher level classes unless I just wanted to review. Well, I've decided next semester, I'm going to retake the course since I want a better understanding of it this time around. Anyway, my real question is should I take this class for credit or should I just audit the course? I've never audited before so would I have to take exams with the rest of the class. If so then I might as well take it for credit. Please give some advice.

Oooh...hmm...I personally would go buy Chemistry for Dummies or some other book like that and read it and move on. I wouldn't want to waste a whole semester (or two?) retaking something. If you read a book like that you could probably remember a lot. Just put the work in yourself and don't waste your time/money going to class to listen to someone tell you things you can read yourself. That's what I would do at least.

LOL. Used Chemistry for Dummies to review for PCAT. I feel like having someone tell me what to do will actually give me a more comprehensive understanding of the subject. Also, I'll have someone to ask when I have questions. Of course, Chemistry for Dummies costs about $12 and the course at a CC will cost me $200.

I think if you are going to pay for a class and sit through it you might as well get a grade for it. Plus if you apply to schools that have a cut-off for how long ago you took a class that 5 year mark might catch up to you. When I've talked to people who have audited a class, they can take the tests if they want but they don't have to. I don't know for sure though if you don't always have to take the tests since it might depend on the professor.

I agree. You might as well get a grade, and force yourself to really study for the materials.

Is there an option to challenge for credit? Maybe you can initially sign up for an audit, and if you're doing really well, change your status to credit?
