Unless I'm mistaken, an audition rotation is usually an away rotation. You are going someplace you might want to apply to to let them know you. If they like you, it goes a long way to getting them interested in you. Hence you are auditioning for the match. A sub-I is usually a second rotation at your own school, in a specialty (or subset thereof) you have already done a core rotation in. Lets you see more of it, build on your prior rotation, but with attendings more interested in teaching you and giving you more hands-on responsibility, because they see that you actually might want to go into the field.

Along the sames lines as the OP, are there advantages/disadvantages t doing a sub-I as an audition rotation versus another rotation at the institution (e.g. a specialty service)?

Sub-I usually equals any MS-IV rotation where you're meant to function at the level of an intern. Sometimes your orders won't even need to be cosigned. These are usually either done in IM or Surgery, or in the field of interest.

An audition rotation is also known as an away rotation. It refers to any rotation completed outside of your home med school. Almost always you'd do it in your field of interest, trying to meet important attendings at a desirable program (e.g. Program Director or Chairman), and gain letters of recommendation.

To add to the confusion:

- Sub-internship rotation ("sub-I"): a rotation during your fourth year that assume the responsibilities of an intern. Also known as an 'acting intern'.

- Audition rotation: any fourth year rotation where you are 'auditioning' for the specialty or program. Useful in two ways: to audition for a residency spot at that program, or to get a good LOR from that program to use at other programs.

- Away rotation: any rotation away from your home institution.

The confusion is that one could do an audition rotation at a program but not act as a sub-intern. The value of doing an audition rotation *not* as a sub-intern is debatable, but then again - what's the value of doing an audition rotation if you're not showing the program how well you can perform as an intern?

Is every away rotation considered an audition? Not really. Sometimes you do an away just because that rotation gives you better training than what your home institution might provide.

Thanks for the clarity!

I understand the difference between away electives and away sub-internships. I want to rotate at my top choice school to get to know the program (i.e. audition rotation), and I have the option of either doing an elective or a sub-i there. I'm wondering whether I should choose the sub-i because
a) it gives me a better chance to show off my capabilities, and
b) it would satisfy my school's sub-i requirement

Does anyone have any personal experience doing an away sub-i? Is it really more powerful of an audition rotation than a regular away elective, or would I just be wasting my time?
