I wouldn’t stress I think your chances are good of matching with the interviews you have. This is from AASM.

Sleep Medicine Match Statistics​

“According to the 2022 match results statistics for July 2023 appointment, there were 201 certified positions available from 99 certified programs, an increase from 193 certified positions and 95 certified programs last year. Of the 190 certified applicants with rank who selected sleep medicine as their preferred specialty, 167 were matched with a program, and 23 were unmatched. Another 11 physicians who preferred another specialty were matched with a sleep medicine program. (Preferred specialty is defined as the specialty ranked first on the applicant’s primary rank order.) Eighty-four percent of programs, and 89% of positions, were filled by the match. Applicants who did not match to a program will be able to access a list of unfilled programs in the NRMP system.”

Don't forget to sign up for the Match. Sign up on NRMP.org. I don't think you can create rank order list just yet, but you can certainly create a profile, read the details, and pay the $70 service fee. Once you have an NRMP number, you can go back and plug that NRMP number back into ERAS too as recommended on the ERAS website.

I suspect that the first round of interviews have gone out. Anything that comes after now will likely be interview spots that are cancelled by Applicants or the Applicant has a conflict in their schedule and the program is trying to fill enough interview spots to ensure a Match. It appears that the programs are interviewing about 10 candidates for every 1 spot. Sometimes, a 5:1 ratio or Five interviewees to 1 spot to fill. It's really hard to tell though because none of the programs advertise how many interviews they offer.

I'm not sure why it feels like less programs. AASM website previously advertised 99 training programs in Sleep Medicine. I agree. With interviews dying down the past 2 weeks and not many people posting on here, I'm guessing programs are filling internally more this year.

hey everyone, hope the interviews are going well! I know that sometimes there is limited information online and at interviews but was wondering if anyone had any resources or knowledge for any "red flags" about any programs. I haven't seen any red flags from the interviews I went on so far; having more trouble distinguishing programs lol b/c they all starting to blend in in terms of training, salary, call etc.

No on the "red flags". In fact, I've been quite blown away at how good some of the programs appear to be. Most programs have been super friendly and want to make sure you have a good training experience.

The thing I've picked up on is most programs are interviewing more than they did "pre Pandemic" where before they had in person interviews and it now appears everyone has gone Virtual. With the virtual format, the programs can be more efficient and interview more people. In many cases, they are interviewing three times (3x) the number of candidates they used to but not many programs have increased their number of spots or Match Quota. I've heard this same idea from other specialty Matches too where the programs have the luxury of interviewing more people due to Virtual Interviews.

In 4 days, Ranking Opens for NRMP 2024 Sleep Appointments. I believe this means that Wednesday of this week is the day the Match program allows you to start creating your ROL in the System.

Tip For Future Sleep Applicants: During the application / interview season, it's a good idea to check your e-mail and ERAS message center once per day as things change very quickly. For example, I had an interview scheduled, but a program asked me to change the date and occasionally the program will send an interview by a different platform such as Thalamus, Interview Broker, or e-mail alone (Not Using ERAS). Due to differing platforms being used, it is a great idea to keep an old fashioned, paper and pen Calendar for Aug, Sept, October.

It appears you have a little over 6 weeks to compile it, add programs to the list, resequence your ROL, ponder, and revise it before Finalizing your list in the System. Is there a "good" time to send letters of intent to top program choice or is that not really a thing for sleep medicine?

I don't really know if it's a thing. I don't really know if there is a "good" time. I don't really know how to answer this query. Part of the problem is I am a candidate too who knows very few people who have matched into Sleep so I don't have the perspective of others experiences. I don't think it is a bad idea to let a program know you are interested in them. It may or may not affect your ranking as I suspect that the ranking of candidates is based on committee of faculty members (collective impression of the faculty members who you interviewed with). This is purely speculative on my part. I'm only speculating here.

Each candidate's rank order list has to be certified by the Middle of next week. The deadline for Certification of the ROL is Nov 15. Thanks for everyone's participation this season.
