Hi,

Could someone please explain the significance of being first vs second vs third vs last author, etc on a publication or abstract?

Thanks

"In general" (and IMO, as there are no hard and fast "rules" for this)

Most folks assume the 1st author actually wrote the paper and did most of the work involved with the experiments.

The corresponding author is usually the lab PI who supervised the project. He typically is the one who came up with the concept design, but didn't actually DO the work.

The last author position is generally given to the corresponding author.

The 2nd through (n-1) author all contributed but in lesser terms, as compared to the 1st author.
