That's a good call. I am tentatively planning on early August but I don't want to have nothing to do for like 2 weeks either!

First year I came up one week before classes started. I wouldn't come too much earlier because I think you'd go stir crazy, haha. This year I came up the Saturday before classes started.

It really depends for me on if I bring furniture up or not. It's just so expensive! I would take some extra time to furnish the apartment if I come up mostly empty handed. Still not sure about what to do about a bird cage, even if I order it online shipping is outrageous. And it would cost me twice as much as a new cage to bring the one I have up. Gah.

Congrats on everyone getting interviews!

Aspire - Still no word?? I'm on pins and needles for you!

Nope still nothing! But mail in New Brunswick is super slow... a letter to my home town from Nova Scotia took a whole week and one day! 😕

Hoping tomorrow will be the day 😀

Saw a post on kijiji about a vet student looking for housing in August 🙂 I am sooo excited!

Any international students (current or prospective) have ideas on health insurance? I am currently on my moms health insurance plan but even the college I attend in CT, as well as doctors in the surrounding area of CT, don't accept it because it is primarily a NYC insurance plan. I was thinking of getting the health insurance that the school offers? Any advice? Please and thank you 🙂 😳

Have to talk to my insurance provider but I plan on staying on the 'rents plan as long as I can.

Same here. I can stay on my mom's insurance for another two years, then I plan on switching to the school's plan. But if your mom's plan isn't going to cover you for anything then you should probably consider getting on the school's plan. I took a brief look at it and it sounds like it's pretty comprehensive. It even includes dental, which is exciting since I'm losing my dental insurance in a week. 🙄

Omgoodness Aspire! You must be going crazy! Hopefully it's there Monday.

Thanks for the input on health insurance Blackdog and TooLove! I don't want to run into the problem of needing a doctor and them not participating with my moms insurance plan so I may end up getting the schools health insurance. Anyone taking a visit up to UPEI before moving in August time?

My mom and I had talked about going up in July so I could look at apartments, but I think I may have found a place 🙂xf: !) so we probably won't be doing that now. We are planning on going up a week early in August though, so we can have a bit of a vacation together before classes start! 😀

Ellie I am routing for you as much as I'm routing for myself. We were both wait listed last year and this might just be the year we get something better. Good luck! I want us to be classmates in the fall.

Same to you LabRat! Hopefully this is our year!! 😀

Just got in touch with Sharon King and the accounting office and discovered that my bank did indeed screw up and my tuition deposit was not credited to my account. Good thing I thought to check instead of just assuming it was all set! 😱😱😱

EDIT: Also, if anyone is looking for an apartment near campus, there's a furnished apartment available on the same property as the apartment that I've decided to rent. There's also another vet student living there too, so you would get to have two vet student neighbors. 🙂 I also have some info on other apartments from a few other landlords in the area, so feel free to PM me and I can share some details!

I guess I was worrying over nothing, NB mail is just really slow!!!

Interview on May 13th at 2PM 😀

Hi everyone, Congrats to all of the international acceptances! Because I believe this thread is great for support, I figured I would fill you guys in on my current status: a few weeks ago I found out I was waitlisted, so I'm thrilled I'm at least still in the running! :xf: for the other wait listers as well. It would be great if I could be classmates with you all, so we shall see...more waiting (of course lol). Also, does anyone know the percentage of international applicants that usually get accepted from the alternate list? In my letter it said that has happened in past years.

I don't know about percentages, maybe one of the current students can weigh in on that. But I did hear that one year they took everyone on the international wait list. The list tends to move pretty quickly after April 15th because a lot of accepted internationals will choose to go to U.S. schools instead. So there's a very good chance you will be called!

Perhaps you could find out where on the wait list you are? If you are in the very beginning, it sounds like you could pretty much count on getting a call!

I had originally asked them how many internationals are on the alternate list and got a response that they cannot tell me where I am on the waitlist, so unfortunately I didn't really get an answer to my question lol. BlackDog had mentioned that she had heard one year they took everyone on the international alternate list, so I'm just wondering (as I had asked them) how many people could actually be in the list? (It can't be that many if they went through the entire list...).

Do they reject applicants or just put them on the alternate list?

According to past SDN forums and stats I've received from other sources of information, yes they do reject plenty of international applicants before putting them on the alternate list.

Hmm... not sure what to assume about my application then. I haven't heard from them since January.

You haven't received a final decision (i.e.: acceptance/rejection/alternate list) as of yet?

No and I didn't withdraw my application yet. (I'm planning on attending Glasgow now, but thought since I applied I would wait to be rejected or put on the alternate list).

Hey everyone, I'm a future AVC applicant (I won't be able to apply until 2014) from the maritimes. I had a question about pre-reqs and was hoping someone here could help me considering you've all applied before! I was wondering if Biochemistry can be counted as one of the chemistry prerequisites? I emailed Jack Macdougall about this and he said he could do an academic evaluation for me, which wasn't exactly the answer I was looking for because I do not yet have enough pre-reqs accumulated to really do any sort of evaluation so I wanted to wait until next year to do something like that. Anyway, if anyone here has the answer to my question, it would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

Biochemistry counted for me as one of my chem prereqs. I would have Jack do the academic evaluation. I had one done and it saved me from taking 2 unnecessary bio classes. You can send a list of courses you plan to take as well 🙂

If he does an academic review (even if you don't have all your pre reqs) it's still very helpful. You can clearly see your classes and corresponding grades. It's a good to keep track of your academic average as you go.

I believe it states that you need General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and a chemistry elective (or it could be two chemistry electives). General Chemistry I and II counted (and they were both required for my degree). I replaced my chemistry elective mark by taking Biochemistry.

Also, I kept track of all of my pre-req courses in an excel file along with my marks. If you wanted to see how I did it, I'd be happy to show you.

When I first created a file, my calculated average was lower than what my academic evaluation told me. It turns out there are some secrets... my two first year biology courses counted as my animal sciences. As long as the courses are first year and required by your institution, they count. I was tickled pink by that haha.

An evaluation will also tell you if you are missing any courses.

Organic is required, the other two are just any two chemistry. I think most people have to take Gen Chem I and II before O Chem though, so for most people Gen Chem I and II will end up being the two chemistry electives. So if you do better in Biochem than Gen Chem, it could bump off one of those marks, as far as I know. The only issue with Biochem is that it doesn't always have a lab component and AVC requires that science courses have a lab. I know when I took Biochem, the lab was a separate class. That said, I've found Biochem pretty handy in vet school (way more so than O Chem, but that's a whole 'nother bucket of worms.)

Huh. I took biochem without a lab. But maybe all of my required lab courses were met by OCI/II and GCI/II so it didn't matter anyway?

Thanks everyone for your advice! Greatly appreciated. My gen chem I mark really sucks but my gen chem II mark is pretty good, so I was hoping to be able to use my gen chem II and biochemistry courses for my chemistry marks for AVC, and of course organic as the third. I checked on the course description for intro biochem on my university's website, and it says that it has a lab component, I'm going to talk to an academic advisor just to be sure that it does though. Thanks again everyone, and good luck to all who are waiting on interview invites/results. I'm rooting for you all!

My company is opening a new location in Lloydminster, Sask. and are hiring internally. There is my golden opportunity to get out of this situation haha

That's great! 👍

No GRE required over here....hehe. 😉

I think competition is actually tougher for WCVM.

I think it really depends on what province you're in. That being said, applications reached a record high this year (unfortunately, I don't know the provincial break-down).

WCVM-wise, Sask or Manitoba are the places to be.

Is anyone planning on living in the apartment (Blanchard hall) on campus?

Theoretically, I think we can. I don't know anyone who does though. I don't know how the dates would work either, since we start and end after the regular UPEI campus, so the dates might not match up - residences didn't open until Sep 3 this year but AVC started Aug 27, and the residences will close on April 20, but we don't finish exams until May 3. Blanchard Hall works out to be $692 per month for a semi-private, and I think you could find an apartment with a roommate for much less, or even without a roommate, I have a 1 bedroom and I pay $650, which includes rent, parking, electricity, hot water, cable, and heat.
