We are trying not to think about it 😛

In the midst of keeping myself busy I'm taking a white water kayaking course on Sunday! I'm very excited for this. I also worked for the last 28 days straight and every evening I've been either kayaking, riding my horse, or going for a run/walk. So far, I haven't gone crazy.

Good luck!! When I was waiting I basically refreshed my email every second that I wasn't working...and I did go pretty crazy...so keeping busy is definitely a good idea!
 
I'm also trying to stay busy. I work at an animal shelter 9-4 Monday to friday and milk cows on the farm all weekend. Plus I just bought a new 3 yr old green broke mare that I am working with during any free time that I have! June has been going by fairly fast, but I'm starting to get nervous/excited/scared. 😱

I'm going to start checking the mail late next week but I'm not expecting anything until the week after 🙄

I've been creeping this thread for awhile - seriously considering establishing residency in the East for not this upcoming year but the next. I know you're all anxiously awaiting acceptances (you all sound great and I have a lot of faith) but I'm wondering if there is a quota for each province. Do they just take about 10 from each?
 
The following is the breakdown of seats per province:

NF: 3
PE: 10
NB: 13
NS: 16

But the competition varies for each province. The following is the breakdown of applicants/province for the current application cycle:

NF: 13 I think (average)
PE: 40 (it was 21 last year)
NB: 37 (that's average)
NS: 72 (enormous jump from last year's 57)

So, if you're looking to establish residency NB is your best bet and then normally PEI is a safe bet too, just not this year. NS is consistently the most competitive and NF varies.

Aspire: I love that you also milk cows. From your profile pic I'd guess jerseys?

lab rat- We milk about 40 holsteins and 20 jerseys! Love the Jerseys they have so much personality (even though they are brats sometimes) 😀
The calf in my picture is Willow she is a heifer now and she is basically like a pet, always looking for scratches and kisses.

I hoping there will be a lot of atlantic Canada acceptance posts on here soon 🙂

I got accepted!!! I still can't believe it... it hasn't sunk it yet 😀 I've been dreaming of this day since I was 12 years old.

Nothing seems real. My father cried when I told him. If you knew my dad, it's kind of a big deal. He never shows emotion! I go home on Thursday and I'm so excited to see my family and get to celebrate with them.

Anyone know of any private or commercial stables with a stall or pasture space? What do horse owners do with their horses?

The farm I'm renting my apartment from does some horse boarding. I'm not sure if it's just for their tenants or not, but you could call and ask. Here's their website: http://www.terpstrafamilycottages.com
 
I would post on your Facebook group to ask about where to keep your horse. It all depends on your style - classmates do anything from western to hunters to just recreational hacking and where you end up boarding could definitely be influenced by what you want to be doing with your horse. If you aren't able to find anything through FB, shoot me a PM - I'll ask my friend for a few recommendations 🙂

I heard! According to the landlady there were three vet students living there this year. I think the one living in the apartment I will be renting just finished her fourth year.
 
Has anyone thought about banking? For the internationals at least that is. I was planning on opening a student checking account once I arrive, but the Simple banking app/platform is piquing my interest...it basically eliminates the need to go to the bank! Not sure if there would be any international fees incurred from Canada though.

My friend who is at AVC recommended TD Bank. They have a Canadian branch, so you can open both an American and a Canadian account and transfer money between them without fees. Plus it only takes something like 24 hours for the money to transfer between accounts, whereas other banks can take up to 5 days. This is what I plan on doing, since it will be easy for my mom to just deposit money into my American account (she's helping me with living expenses) and then I can access it whenever I need to.

If you're dead set on a complex, there are some in Stratford. I briefly looked at Duck's Landing, I think thats what it's called. Not sure if any students live there as it was definitely pricey. It's not within walking distance to campus either.

Complexes seem to be few and far between, from what I saw when I was looking at places. I know UPEI has some relatively affordable apartment-style "Family Housing" that someone mentioned earlier in the thread. I also saw a condo complex in Stratford that was nice, but a little more pricey.

Most of the available apartments seem to be in buildings/houses with multiple other apartments all owned by the same landlord. I wouldn't really call it a complex, but you likely wouldn't be the only student there.

👍 again. There are very few traditional company owned complexes like you see in more populated areas but there are buildings where landlords own multiple apartments.
 
Any runners at AVC? Thinking about the PEI Marathon in October. 🙂

Anyone running 10k isn't a weiner. Good lord, if you're a weiner, I'm frigging cocktail weenie (just restated C25k).

There's a few avid runners in our class. There was also a weekly work-out group that was being held on Fridays last year by two of the women in our class. Certainly lots to do!
 
I'm debating on what to do about boots. I have a pair of rubber steel toed boots but they are frigidly cold in the winter. They keep my toes warm enough for hanging out in a milk parlour but would be too cold for a barn. My interests lies in dairy so the boots I get will likely be used post vet school. Now for my question.

My first choice are Muck Boots. They are warm and excellent quality. I have a pair of Muck riding boots and I love them. The problem is is that they are neoprene on the upper half so wouldn't scrub as nicely as rubber.

My second choice are Dunlops. The ones with the 2 inch "lift kit". I've never own or even worn a pair but they'd be easier to scrub clean.

Thoughts? Dunlops are a little more costly.

I know at least one person with the Muck boot types and she hasn't had a problem through the first two years. I think some people have steel toe boots, I don't, I just have a cheap pair of boots I got at Wal-Mart and stuck some extra insoles in for days when I'd be standing in them for 2-3 hours.

Keep in mind that you may want 2 pair of boots - a good decent pair for farm work and a cheap pair for anatomy.

Maybe to help you decide, I can tell you what you'll be using them for.

First semester first year:
- Animal Production Systems has field trips every two weeks. As the semester goes on, some of them do get chilly because you are outside and in barns in PEI in November (I remember the trip to the racetrack being the coldest).
- Anatomy requires boots. Nothing fancy, just something to keep your feet dry and perferably fairly comfortable for standing for 2-3 hours at a time.
- Optional wetlabs sometimes require boots, but they're usually held in our barn, which is pretty clean, so as long as you can scrub them below about your ankle, you should be fine.

Second semester first year:
- Clinical orientation has barn work in our teaching barn, grooming horses and cows and working with horses and cows. Again, the Muck boots would probably be fine, you won't be tramping through any fields knee-deep in mud.
- Anatomy again, usually boots are more important second semster when you get into the large animals, there's just higher volumes of fluids and everything is just messier.

First semester second year:
- Clinical orientation II is similar to ClinOI.

Second semester second year:
- I'm not sure I actually used mine outside of wetlabs...

There's also lambing sessions (extra-curricular) that some students do, but I've never done one so I can't comment on what you'd need for footwear.
