Well for the Goldwater at least, you need a nominaton from your school to even apply.

Hello,

I've done a (quick) search on this topic, and didn't find too much. Anyone have advice on how to apply to scholarships? I'm looking for general advice. I realize of course that a lot of scholarships are looking for specific applicant profiles. But I'm late to applying for awards/scholarships, so general advice on how to proceed would be great. Some specific questions:

1) For very prestigious awards/scholarships (e.g. Fullbright, Goldwater), what do I need to know? Where does one even start? I'd assume it goes something like find prestigious award/scholarship, research info on it, tailor yourself to that profile as much as possible, (hopefully) win.
2) For very prestigious awards/scholarships, how much is it dependent on connections? Is SDN-knowledge good enough?
3) Any tricks of the trade that anyone would be willing to share?

Thanks!

Start by googling the prestigious scholarships you want to apply to and read up as much as you can on all the information. You're going to make sure that you absolutely fit the character of these scholarships before you apply because they are a lot of work and are very time consuming. Typically these scholarships only accept upperclassmen. Then you would find your on-campus representative for scholarships or awards. Usually they are in an office called "office of national scholarships/fellowships/awards/etc.". Normally they (or a professor/someone important) will have to nominate you just in order for you to apply. They will not nominate you if you aren't a stellar student, don't have great EC's, a hard work drive, and a collective and holistic application that shows you are working towards one large goal. Normally these scholarships don't like people who just want to be a doctor. They want people who are going to be the future leaders of tomorrow--as the Truman Scholarship puts it "Agents of Change".

Hope all goes well for you, and that you apply well!

The websites of those awards/scholarships you are interested in have the majority of the information you need from requirements to application process. Tricks of the trade? Start earlier than you think you should.
