I've tried to find good info on this here and on AM (but the search function is not the best there)

I'm an MS3 wondering if a rads away elective is necessary for me, I've heard many different points on this....here are my stats (and I know this is my first post, but this is an honest post, I'm not a troll)

-Pre clinical honors in multiple MS1 and MS2 classes
-Step 1 261/99
-MS3 grades: Honors in Medicine, honors in OB/GYN, Pass in psych (Surg, fam, peds rotations to come)
-Research: I did a lot of research b/w MS1 and MS2 in urology because its an active research dept at my school and I didn't know I wanted to do Rads, but I was an author (not first or second) for a publication in Journal of Urology on Low Dose CT, submitted a paper (waiting on reviewers currently, first author) unrelated to rads in Urology gold journal, have multiple presentations at regional meetings, a first place research award at my schools research convention, and multiple accepted abstracts at various urology conferences.
-Most likely will get AOA
-Some other significant EC activities like community service, tutoring jobs, etc...

I'd be happy if I had to stay at my home institution and have scheduled many electives with them early in my MS4 year to get some good LORs, but going somewhere else would be nice to. I'm from Cali and would like to stay in state, unless I have the opportunity to go to a big name place out of state. My question: is an away rotation really necessary? I don't have my heart set on any one place in particular. Thanks!

P.s. any advice on when to take step 2 with my step 1 score I have?

No need to do an away with your app. You will get interviews without it. Only benefit of doing an away would be to show an interest in a program in a part of the country that you don't have ties to.

Take step 2 as late as possible with your step 1 score. I'd advise anyone with step 1 > 240 to wait.

The only reason to take Step 2 early (after interviews come out an before ROL are due) is for UCSF. Don't bother with aways, you are so strong that they can only hurt you at this point. You will get fantastic interviews.
