Does anyone know the best way to go about setting up away rotations, specifically at USC? I'd really like to get in there so I have a better chance of getting a residency spot. Does doing an away rotation there help those odds? I'm currently thinking about neurology, Emergency Medicine, or Internal Medicine.....any advice would be appreciated, especially if there are any USC students out there who would like to chime in!!

Call the program director of each of those programs and tell them you're interested in signing up for an away rotation. They may tell you to contact someone else, but at least you'll be on the right track. Most programs will grant an interview to students who do an away rotation at their program. So at the least it gets your foot in the door, and certainly they'll be able to put more than just a name to a face.

Thanks for the advice! Please keep it coming....

(I did an away rotation at USC as an MS-IV. Applied early.)

Hey Blade,

Thanks for the information! Does it matter if I'm still undecided as to what specialty I want to go into? i.e. will it help to do a rotation in Emergency Medicine at USC if I end up wanting to do Neurology as a resident there? Or should I really try to get into the specialty I plan on applying to? Also, is this something that can be done fourth year or is it better to do this third year? Thanks again for the information on the site!

Why would you want to go to USC? They just lost to Oregon State.

You're right, their football program isn't as strong as the exciting lacrosse program at Maryland, but I'm going to slum it and would like to try out their residency program anyway.

Depends on what field you're interested in, and what your goals are.

If you're doing an away sub-I and are trying to get an interview/letter of recommendation, it behooves you to do the rotation in your chosen field.
