Hello everyone,
I am planning to apply to General Surgery this coming fall and am worried that I chose not to do any aways. I am at a mid-tier USMD institution and our surgery advisor advised me that an away rotation was not strictly necessary. That it is more so useful for gaining experience outside our medical system and getting a LoR from someone outside our system rather than improving my chance's of matching at my #1 program. However, I have been doing much more reading on the application process recently and see mixed advice on places like reddit - where some state that aways are incredibly important to do.
What's the truth of it? Will my chances of matching take a hit because I have chosen not to do any aways, or does it not have much bearing on getting ranked?
