AZCOM Class of 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
BryanDOAZCOM-

I too have been accepted at Nova and TUCOM. I am curious to know you're reasons for choosing AZCOM over the others. I am unfortuneately waitlisted at AZCOM and have no idea when they'll "get around" to letting me know my status but I just thought I would ponder over your reasons for choosing AZCOM....

Thanks!

Hi guys,
I know there has been a few strings on PDA's, but I am curious if any of you (my future classmates) have PDA's, are planning on buying one and if so which kind.
I am also getting a new computer because this one has to stay with my husband in New Orleans. I love having a laptop, and would love to find some reasons to justify getting another one! What do you guys think?
Does AZCOM have any kind of deals set up with computer co. (like Dell) to get their students discounts?

careofme,
Nova was my first interview, but i would have to say my best, Dr. Terry and I believe connected pretty well, and he almost told me I would get in. i was quite impressed with the campus, and how could you beat S. Florida. one of the things i did not like about school though was the year round deal, it only really matters for the first two years but still kind of freaked me out. the main reason i was turned off on that school and turned on by AZCOM was the class size and the feeling i got from the students. I was only one of probable five hundred interviewees, but it was as i was important to them. one of the professors took me aside and asked me if i had any idea what i would like to specialize in, he then told me how i could do that here, and how he could help me. I hadnt even been accepted! anyway for lack of better words i just got the feelin i was supposed to go here. ironically that was my worst interview, my first choice, just wasnt clickin that day, oh well they decided to let me in. TUCOM was last on my list basically because i did not feel that they had the facilities yet to optimize my learning, it is going to be a great school down the road. Dr. Haight was a pretty cool cat though.
hope this helps, at least you have an acceptance letter, thats more than i can say for a lot of my friends.
Bryan

I wasn't planning on getting a PDA until 3rd year. But I was planning on getting a nice one. I got a cheapy one last year when I graduated from Arizona, but it's not much more than a fancy planner and address book. I want a nicer one

Kadyra - when you went down to look at apts in Glendale, did you look at Camden Towne Center on 79th Street?
I am not sure if I am going to be able to come look for apts, so I might have to do the much warned against short-term lease sight-unseen. I am trying to take some time off in June to visit, but it isn't looking good.
If you have any time to post a brief synopsis of your apt. looking - I would be super gratefull...I'll take you out to lunch after school starts!

Sugar72,

I'll post it tonight after I get home from my other job. I hate working 2 jobs!!!!!!

Thanks Kadyra - I have been there with the two jobs and it does stink!

Kad-- what are your two jobs???!!! i have two as well and am about to focus all my energies on just one--it's health care related so i figure it will help! The other is managing a b&b-- it was fun during school because i had plenty of time to study but now i go crazy with boredom!

I work during the day for NCS Pearson, which is a company that scores essay questions on standardized tests. No, we have nothing to do with the MCAT WS section. It's very very very very very boring and makes me glad I am furthering my education. I actually fell asleep in my chair on Monday morning, so I lied and said I had a migraine. I hate lying about them because I really get them, but I didn't think they'd let me go home because I needed sleep. At night, I deliver pizzas for Papa John's.

If I still have access to my pm's I'll pm the apartment info. If I don't have my pm's anymore, it may take me a while to e-mail it... It was a lot of info ;-)

Anyone have any idea when they start calling peeps from the dreaded "Alternate" list??

Careofme

Kadyra - you sound very busy. I appreciate whatever info you can send me and I am in no real big hurry, I am not going to move until August.
When are you planning on moving there?

Care of me - I am not sure when the alternate list starts moving, but I remember last year's posts and AZCOM alternates were being called and offered spots through the end of August.
i hope someone has better info for you, I know it gets frustrating waiting!

I am also moving up to Glendale sometime in August. I want to move the first weekend, but I might have to work a little bit longer in order to be able to eat before my financial aid check comes. Eating is important

What's up all you crazy kids? Thought I might drop a senseless hello to everyone. I am writing from the windy, overcast, slightly rainy, but always beautiful Oregon coast. There is a patient stairing me in the face and so I must go.

have fun all.

Hi everyone!

I just found out about this site and I am glad I did. Its good to see all the excitement you all have about attending AZCOM next year. Well, I'll be there with you. :) It looks like Derek and a couple others have posted in that Utah AZCOM post, but thats not all of us from Utah who are planning to attend. Two of my good friends, Ryan and Chris, are coming too and I know of a couple more. Its crazy how many people from Utah are going to be attending next year. But, I am hoping that there will be people from all over the states planning to attend as well. Nothing like meeting new faces.
Anyways, I have a couple questions. I noticed that some of you are reviewing biochemistry before we start in fall. That is a very good idea and I would like to jump up on the band wagon as well. I was wondering what review books you all are using. I went to Barne's and couldn't find a thing. Also, Chris, Keisha (my girlfriend), and I are going to be down in Glendale next week to look at appartments. I don't know about Chris, but Keisha and I plan to live off campus. What appartments would you suggest? I've been using AppartmentGuide.Com to look at a few of the complexes in the area and have taken interest in Arrowhead Summit, Arrowhead Landing, Arrowhead Highlands, and the Springs at Arrohead. Wow! Thats a lot of arrowheads. I found SageStone to be a bit too expensive. If there are any others you would suggest, please let me know. Finally, I am curious to how I should be planning to study during the year. I know it may be a little premature to be asking this question, but I need to know if I am going to have a life outside of school while I am there. :)
Again, its nice meeting all of you and I look forward to meeting you all next year!

Take Care,
Dave

Dfrankyk,
what part of sl are you in?? are you a uofu grad?? i have a pda question....does anyone know pros/cons of an ipaq 3765??? i found a possible one for 260ish and thought i might get one....but then i worry about the palm compatibility thing- ans is compaq a reliable product??? eeeeek! i try and reasearch it but it all starts to sound very much alike!

JHug,

How are ya doing? I'm from Park City actually, but I now live in Salt Lake (Fort Union area). Yes, I graduated from the "U" during May of 2000. Afterward, I finished up a couple more semesters of premed requirements and took the MCAT.

About that PDA . . . I know a thing or two. My understanding is that there are two operating systems, the Windows CE and the PALM OS, and that they are not compatible with one another. Most PALMS are pretty straight forward ("point and click") PDA's, while those using the Windows CE (i.e. Compaq and Casio brands)are just like using Windows XP. To answer your question, I've heard good things about the Compaq PDAs. I have a PALM (PALM V) and I like it, but I am awed by Window CE. I want Media Player on my PDA! Also, I have the old green and black screen. Color looks so nice. So, I don't think you should worry about the brand, but instead which operating system would best suit your needs and what features, such as color, the PDA has. But, if you decide to go with the PALM OS, check out the Visor (. . . or Vizor, I can't remember) brands, they use the PALM OS, and I've heard they are really good for the money.

Take Care,
Dave

Dave,

I plan on having as much of a life outside school as I can. I have family in the Phoenix area and I'm from Tucson, so all of my friends are down here. And I am happy to show people around both cities. I also might be going out of town every other month, but I'm not sure about that yet. Plus I'll have my dog and I'll need to get out with her every once in a while.

I e-mailed sugar72 some apartment info that I have. I can copy and paste it into a pm for you. It's not as detailed as it used to be, but a lot of the info is still there and if you ask specific questions, I should be able to answer them.

i was just surfing around this site and got curious by some of the other posts---
How many of us speak another language(s) and which is it/are they???
i speak english & spanish

Ah.... referring to the Wake Forest thread or the one about the trilingual person? Obviously I speak English. I used to be pretty fluent in French, but I never practice anymore so the ability is getting smaller by the moment. I also can read and understand a lot of Spanish. I don't speak it very well though.

Just a curiosity jhug? Or some ulterior motive?

Welcome to the board Dave :) !

I can speak a little bit of Spanish, German, and even Arabic (just a few words of this one). I definitely am not fluent in these, but I can understand them to some degree. I am English all the way!!

Interesting question jhug    !

Hey all,

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. :D I want to be able to speak spanish. I actually took the five quarters of it in college to get my BA, but all I can remember really is, "donde es el banjo?" or "la quenta, por favor." I heard that there is a spanish in medicine elective at AZCOM, but I'm not sure.

By the way, Kadyra, I responded to your PM about the appartments via PM. Just want to make sure you got it. But, if you didn't . . . thank you, thank you, thank you!

And for JHug, I went to Circuit City to check out that PDA you were talking about. That thing rocks. I really like the Compaq PDAs, no wonder they are so popular. You should get it if its only $260, the one I saw was $399, I think. Also, they are going to be coming out with the IBM Microdrive, its a card you put into the PDA. It supposedly can hold like 20 gigs. I don't know how much it is going to sell for, but its going to work on all the PDAs as far as I know. You may want to check that out with that Compaq.

Take care,
Dave

Well, it's been a while since I've posted anything. I had to convince myself that I needed to pass all of my finals this semester. I don't know about the rest of you graduating this year, but I had a heck of time studying!! In fact, I was worried about failing one of my classes! I passed though. Anyways, just thought I'd say hi. I'm heading to AZCOM in the fall as well and am totally excited about it. Look forward to meeting everyone.
In response to jhug's little survey, I speak fluent French, but I'm still working on the English.
C'ya

It has been a while for me, as well. Nice to see more AZCOM-to-be's posting. I am excited to move down to AZ and get started.

JHUG - I am fluent in Portuguese.

kad-- i am a dad of three and buying a minivan-- how many alterior motives can i have :) :) :)
i'm 24 going on 37!! i already feel my hair thinning and my waist growing!! my back hurts, my knees hurt and i can jump like i used to :p
i'm dying to learn french, portuquese or italian-- i can understand quite a bit but nowhere near where i want to be so i guess one motive is to bug someone to help me learn. Now that the weather is nice is anyone in the utah crowd (everyone for that matter) interested in getting together again for a picnic in the park??!!

jhug, of course I was teasing you! I just wondered if you were trying to stir up some controversy in our nice quiet thread  And I am the oldest 23 year old 'girl' on the planet. Except I'm far far faaaaaaaaaaaar from marriage and even farther from kids... At least you have an excuse!

I was wondering if orientation if somewhat formal ie khaki's for a guy, or if it is like another day of class.

For orientation I am wearing flip flops, a bow tie and sunglasses. That's it. It'll be a good time. :D

speaking of flip-flops....does anyone else love the idea of going to class EVERY SINGLE DAY in shorts, flip-flops, and a t-shirt!?!?!
If i didn't love changing about 28 diapers and going through 2 gallons of formula a day i'd totally be there with you this fall :) :) :)

Just so you guys know, orientation is SUPER laid back as far as dress code goes. Wear whatever you feel like wearing!

And also, for those of you who are coming from out of state, it is not possible to wear summer clothing year round. It's not that warm all year.

azcat, I am from oregon were people come out in bathing suits when its sunny and 50 degrees. It'll take me at lest the first year to get aclimated to the weather. If there ever comes a time when I wear a long sleeve shirt in 70 degree weather because I think it is too cold, then I don't know what I will do to myself. Mmmmmmm sunshine.

FYI....

The class of 2005's website is being shut down.

www.azcom2005.org

This sucks, it was so informative :( . It's probably due to lack of funding in maintaining the site.

Hope ya'll are doing well.

Well that sucks, titan. Although I have to admit that it's not putting a damper on my wonderful, wonderful mood this morning. Well, for the past 3 days actually :D

sport and jhug, If you think you'll be wearing shorts when it's 30 degrees in the morning, more power to you  Guys seem to be able to stand the cold mornings a lot better than girls can. There were people down at U of A who wore shorts all year round. I thought they were crazy, but after 14 years here, my blood is a little thin... Bathing suits in 50 degree weather?????? That is insane!

kad-- why the super mood for the past few days???
when in the year does it ever get to 30 degrees? i was there in october and had the ac in my rental car on full at 8am!!
How bout them diamondbacks???!! do you think the F.A. department will calculate season tickets into my living expenses? :)

•••quote:•••Originally posted by jhug:
•kad-- why the super mood for the past few days??? ••••• Well, happy things have just been happening. I shouldn't say all happy things. But the happy things are making the sad things seem like nothing. ::sigh:: We just won't go there right now. If I am still smiling in August, then I will tell you, if you're moving down here then

•••quote:••••when in the year does it ever get to 30 degrees? i was there in october and had the ac in my rental car on full at 8am!! •••••October is still hot in Arizona. It was hotter than usual last year though. But in December/January it gets in the 30's at night. It gets colder than that in Tucson, but I am pretty sure Phoenix sees some freezing temperatures as well. It's not always warm here :)

•••quote:••••How bout them diamondbacks???!! do you think the F.A. department will calculate season tickets into my living expenses? :) •••••Ha, I wish... I have a hard time getting into pro sports on tv sometimes. But I definitely watched the World Series last year. In fact, I was in Kirksville for one of the games. All the first years out there I met were watching it instead of studying. One of my friends said he'd take me to a d-backs game later this summer after I move up to Glendale. I should probably take him up on that. I like AZ even though I'm really a Cubs fan

I just wanted to see if everyone got their deposits in on time???? Can you believe this is really happening??? You guys start medical school in about two months!!!!
Here, in december/january 30 isn't even a high-- i'm wearing my shorts and tevas every day!!!

I got an extension on my deposit, so it's not due until the 24th. I love the dean. He is so nice. "What time would be good for you to send it?" he asked. Crazy. I like how the school seems to be willing to help you out of the little binds that come up.

jhug-- My blood is thin from living here for so long. I grew up in Chicago and lived through -87 with wind chill, but I think 30 is cold now

School's out! I'm a 2nd year.

•••quote:•••Originally posted by Aloha Kid:

School is out (not just for the summer, but) forever!!!!!!! I'm now a doc? PS titan, as of this point in time you get 3 months off for the summer, but curriculum committee is working on revamping the curriculum so this may change. Much good luck!!!

Can you feel the happiness?

Congrats tedsadoc. Now the joy of being an intern. Just curious what changes are they looking at and will it affect us?

Tedsadoc-- you should feel super proud!!!! Does this mean we won't get any more of your informative posts??? :)
Aloha Kid-- have you found out how the rotations thing works if you want to go to uofh for a rotation?? I have family going to school there and some strong ties with byuh and am really interested in doing a rotation there. (family practice or something)
Do any of you attending see any possibility of inceasing the amount of time given to a surgury rotation?? from what i see it isn't much until you hit electives.

Hey everyone,

Get this, it's a 3 month summer break after your first year. I have enjoyed AZCOMs break schedule immensely and yet feel very competent with all the stuff I'm learning!!! Enjoy Summer.

Regarding the Hawaii rotations. You have three possiblities. The first one is do it military. Tripler Army medical center in Hawaii is well known. If you aren't military then you can do it through UH. You will have to apply to get into UH's rotation system which shouldn't be too hard. Stay away from the Peds rotation by UH. I've heard nasty things. The last option is to find an independent doctor who is personally willing to take you for a duration of time and let you do a rotation with him/her. This is the preceptor based rotation AZCOM talks about. Hope that helps.

Tesadoc,

What kind of residency are you doing? Where at??

Thanks everybody for the congrats! Yes, jhug, I am glowing (or could it be from the radiology rotation I did back in Aug.? :D ) I will do my best to help you guys out if I can, but that depends on how much reading I'm going to have to do after a 12 hour shift. Aloha kid, I'm doing EM in NY (allopathic program and my 2nd choice). The reason I did allo is that I wanted to stay on the West Coast but it didn't work out that way. Oh well :p

The changes that might take place are mostly in the clinical years, like giving students a floating month off that can be used for board study, interviews, personal time. This did not exist the first 3 years. Honors grading system for the clinical years (this was pulled after the first class because the clinical ed. dept. said it was too subjective and that they'd have to find a more objective way to do it, I think they've finally figured it out). They may shorten the vacation bet. first and second year and this might be advantageous for board study (COMLEX 1) but this is only a suggestion (which I believe started with the class before mine) and has not yet come into effect. Some of the ones I mentioned earlier (like the month off) are in effect as of June when the new MS-4's start. Ciao for now.

Tedsadoc-- so with all the junk you hear about DO vs MD on these posts- did you find any of that in your application/interview for residency- especially with an allo residency??? I am totally looking into EM now (we had two emergency situations in the clinic i work at and i loved every minute of it!)
thanks aloha kid, I would most likely do a fp rotation there or maybe an IM or something-- you mentioned doing some yourself, do you think you will you go military, uofh, or private?
HAVE A SUPER SUMMER EVERYBODY!!!!!

Jhug,

I'll definitely do some rotations with UH. I'm going back to Hawaii this Summer and I'll try to shadow some docs and make connections. If I think a doc is a good teacher, and I get along well with him/her, then I'll ask if they would be willing to take me for a few weeks or so during roations.

jhug, in short (the answer to your question) no, that did not come up. I didn't take the USMLE, did well in COMLEX 1 and voila a residency. It didn't hurt that I had an excellent LOR from a level one trauma center in NY either. I'll figure it out when I actually work with my future colleagues, and I guess I'll let you in on it :D

On going for EM, I say: go for it!!!

(your wife and triplets may appreciate that you aren't doing 100+ hours as a surgeon :D )
