Perhaps AZCOM will sponsor a trip there during orientation and use some of our $1,000,000 tuition to give us gift certificates for furniture. wishful thinking.... Maybe I should just buy a tent and a tv and call it a day with the furniture.

yea that woudl be nice....LOL 😀
IF WISHES WERE HORSES......errrr...yea

anyways, what furniture are u looking for???
i have spent a lot of time shopping 4 furniture so maybe i can point u in right direction.

Exia80, since I am moving from the east coast and it is $$$$ for me to ship my desk, bed, etc., I will basically be needing to buy all furniture necessary for an apartment. I think I'll just go via 1800mattress or one of those sleep number beds in that department, but I'll be needing a couch, dresser, table, dishes, pots, (kitchenware). I think I'll be going to BestBuy for the tv since I already have a gift card there. I am not looking for Ethan Allen quality or priced stuff. Hence, I am looking in the Ikea style/price range...something that will last through med school, not bankrupt me, and that I won't be upset about leaving behind when all is said in done in 4 "short" years.
Any advice based on your furniture shopping experience would be appreciated. Until then, I must go back to enjoying the final days of my 80 degree weather.

For all of you looking for furniture, remember IKEA is coming to Phoenix in November. YEAH! Can't beat that place for cheap.

A Wal Mart Superstore is supposed to be completed at the corner of Union Hills and 43rd in December. Seeing as how construction hasn't really started, it probably won't be ready until Spring at the soonest. But that will be THE place for groceries and home supplies.

There's also one at Union Hills and 83rd, though the drive is pretty nasty anytime in the afternoon. It's also near a pretty good concentration of restaurants, movie theatres, etc. over on Bell.

i don't get why they have a walmart AND sam's club next door to each other...

Minor price and selection differences! Wal-Mart has the 25 cent burritos; I calculated that someone could live off them and meet most of their nutritional needs for about $1.75 a day. Then I did so. Poverty is delicious. But when you need that 5-pound can of mushrooms yesterday, Sam's Club is the place to go. Also great deals at SC on beef, which freezes well.

For those of you west coasters who are more the CostCo type, there's one right down the road from aforementioned WalMart/Sam's Club complex. Both of the warehouses also have the members-only discount gas pumps; with Phoenix gas prices what they are, getting a membership in one or the other is a pretty solid investment.

And for those of you who prefer your food a little less industrial, there's a Trader Joe's on Bell a few miles up from 83rd.

And while we're on food--Pizza Hut has a "VIP" plan you can join online; buy two pizzas in any given month and get a third free, with monthly coupons for free sides and the like. For those with pizza-chugging families, it's an excellent deal.

And that's all I've got.

I'm a longtime Kirkland Signature fan. If you're East of AZCOM, the new Walmart will be blessing. And the Costco you want to use is the one at the SW corner of the Hwy 17 and Hwy 101 intersection.

It's a lot less crowded and easier to get to than the Arrowhead one.

First, thank you for all the input. I definitely feel like I have a better vision of what I need to accomplish in the next four years, besides good grades/scores, to get into a residency of my choosing.

My question is how does one find out, during MSI, if s/he is capable of meeting the non-academic requirements of competitive residencies? Specifically, I'm intrigued by a couple of the surgical subspecialties and I don't know if I have the hands, endurance and attitude that programs look for. (Also, at 38, I want to make sure age isn't going to be a liability.) Before I start chasing down electives for next summer that would improve my CV, it would sure be nice to know I'm not wasting my time.

Thanks and feel free to respond here or via PM.

Hey guys.... I'm just wondering if anyone experience driving from vegas to glendale or vice versa. Does it really take 6.5 hours as yahoo said? Are the roads that bad? According to yahoo, it's approx 280 miles. Please let me know what the road conditions and if it really takes that long.

Thanks

I seem to recall it taking a little less time, though not much. If you go over the Hoover Dam (which is pretty neat) on the way, that might be contributing a lot to that 6.5 hour mark...there's a big law enforcement presence there now doing Homeland Security, and if you're driving with a large trailer they will most likely have you open it up and inspect it.

Pretty drive, though--enjoy it!

Being from LV I have had "many" drives to and from.

the Boulder Dam route is shorter, however, durting the day there is A LOT of construction activity going on until 2007! If you are going during the day it may be quicker to go through Bullhead City/Laughlin. The highway is almost completely 4 lanes now (b/c of the increased semi truck traffic they have began to make most of the way 4 lanes...and are almost completely done)
if you are going late at night, then the dam route is way better.
Another bad thing about the BC/L way are the inclines...if your vehicle is sensitive o that sort of thing.
Luke is right, the drive is a pretty one over the dam...Too bad Lake Mead is down like 100ft 🙁

which way are you planning on coming from? yahoo has a funny way of always keeping you on a freeway which sometimes isn't the straightest way to go...
highway 93 (joshua tree parkway) is pretty nice...i think the limit is 65 which means 75...at times it's just a two-lane highway, but i remember enough passing lanes and separate two lane sections to pass/be passed. You'll go through Kingman AZ, an Indian Reservation and a place called "Nothing, Arizona" 🙂

I know that we will be encouraged at orientation to purchase a stethoscope, diagnostic set, and blood pressure cuff (as well as a variety of odds and ends: pen light, reflex hammer, etc), AND that we will be given a great discount by Welch Allyn (40% off). But, other than the stehoscope, are these things we will really need to buy our first year?
Will we even have to use them?
Or can I wait a year or two before I lay out that kinda cash?
The diagnostic set itself is quite the investment... is it worth it.

You can probably get by skipping everything but the steth. A BP cuff can't hurt...I bought mine for $7 at Wal-Mart and it does a surprisingly good job. The other stuff, I'd say, is borrow-able.

Yes and no as to the equipment. I'm on a rotation now where there is not much, each doc & student carries around her/his own steth, oto, ophthalmo, etc. I use mine every day. In many offices all you need is your own steth but not all. So you have to factor in the cost of buying it now as opposed to later when the price may go up. Either way, be sure you are well equiped before you start rotations!

I know we'll find out in a couple of days but just out of curiosity, how much is all of this stuff to buy?

k i tried to get my AZCOM e-mail to go to outlook....on the hep page it says to go to the Forewarding menu................

WELL THAT MENU IS NOT THERE!!!!

Takes anywhere from 5-5.5 depending on how bad traffic at Hover Dam is. I've made the drive many many times. If you really haul you can make there in less than 5.

LA takes a little over 5 as well.

This is what I did to set it up, and it seems to work:
1) Choose "Tools" menu, then "Email Accounts..."
2) Add new account
3) Choose POP3
4) Enter name, full email address ([email protected]), user name (first.last), password (same as logging into webmail)
5) Fill in incoming mail server: azwebmail.midwestern.edu
6) Outgoing mail server: this is different for everyone's different internet providers (something like "mail.something.com")
7) Test account settings and make sure that it automatically authenticates using your password and username.

BTW, I'm using Windows XP with Office 2003, I think its different for Office 2000 and Office XP.

Hope that helps.

Do ya'll know of a good place where a guy could go watch the olympics and have a beer or two?? And by good I mean cheap!

There are a couple of good sports bars within a few miles. The closest one is called Majerle's and is on Bell and 51st area. Another one of my favs is called HAlf Moon and is down Greenway a few miles east. There is a big new sports bar on Bell and 83rd also, but i forget the name.

sl12,

Prices will vary wildly depending on the quality of equipment, of course. Most students get the Littmann stethoscopes, which have the advantage of not standing out. I went with the DRG brand, which costs quite a lot less (you can probably get one for $60-80) and has other assorted bells and whistles. It also stands out a bit more, and so is much harder to lose.

Opthalmascopes can be bought cheaply used up to several hundreds of dollars for the PanOptic that Welch-Allyn will try to sell you in a lengthy, dull, and guilt-ridden presentation. As much as I dislike Welch-Allyn's encyclopedia-salesman tactics, the PanOptic *is* pretty amazing. Better to learn off a standard model, but you might be able to buy a PanOptic off a military person who got it free and doesn't plan on using it. It's a luxury, though.

BP Cuffs: $7-triple digits. The cheap ones get uncalibrated after not too many sessions, but then again, you probably won't be using it much. I'm delighted with my walmart-brand one. In the clinic you'll almost certainly use one of their big fancy ones anyway.

Others probably have a better sense of specific equipment costs...I'd personally go as cheap as possible for everything but the stethoscope, which is as much a guild-badge as anything. Make sure you get one with a long tube that drapes easily around your neck, as that will be its main function for a few years.

There's a place called Uncle Charlie's American Grill at Bell and around 53rd. During happy hour between 4-7, the prices are quite reasonable. In Glendale, it really depends on the atmosphere that you're looking for. There's also McDuffy's at 83rd and just south of Bell. Some others include Famous Sam's at 55th and Bell, and you might try Old Chicago at 55th and Bell... not exactly a sports bar, but they have a pool table, Golden Tee, and a great beer selection.

If anyone is looking for scrubs to use in anatomy, Costco is selling complete sets for $14.99. Not a bad deal for a pair you'll probably want to throw away after the second term.

Edit: I meant to add that I saw this deal today at the Costco at the Arrowhead Mall off Bell and Hwy 101.

My equipment came in handy when I was doing the physicals for the high schools. Other than that, I didn't really use it much. For my "externship" thing this summer I only used my stethoscope (although it was in Cardiology).

thanks guys.... it's good to know that the drive will be pretty at least. 5 hours makes me feel a little better definitely.

Did someone say beer?!?!? I like it and it likes me🙂

I'm a big fight fan and I found that most of the sports bars didnt show fights. I'd go to local casinos to catch the big fights.

i'm just wondering if you current azcomers can suggest good places to take family to, near glendale and phoenix area (site seeing or something unique, and also places to eat).

along the lines of equipmet and books...Do those of you who are military, just get all the books cause they are "free" and do you buy the equipment at schools cause it is reimbursed?

off course still watching that you don't gp over the reimbursable rates???

how old are your kids (family)...the zoo is always fun. We have a membership so we can go for a few hours and not feel ripped off for not seeing every single animal🙂 also, we go to water parks a lot. there is one off the 101 and thunderbird and a fun one in anthem (+/-20mins north on the 17) with a HUGE playground/slide area.

I just visited the Biosphere 2. That was a cool thing to see and my family enjoyed it (i.e. my parents).

Great movie. Didn't know your parents were so cool.

Where have you gone, Pauly Shore, a nation turns it's lonely eyes to you...

It was fun to meet fellow MSIs, MSIIs and beyond tonight. Thank you SOMA members for sponsoring and putting it together.

Medical school is starting to feel very real! I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone better later this week at orientation.

FYI from the registrar's office:

Concerning OCM I/ICM 1511 (Community Medicine, aka 1st and 2nd year clinical experience) for our incomming class...

"It was dropped from the MS I fall quarter curriculum to allow students more time to study the basic science curriculum. It resumes in the winter and spring.
"It was also dropped from the MS II spring curriculum to allow more time to study for the NBOME board exam."

I'm not exactly sure at this point how big an impact this will make on our week-to-week schedules, but I didn't realize that they were doing this. I don't remember any mention of it during interview info sessions or anything. 😕

Hey, just to clarify...this is referrring to our preceptor experience, not ICM (introduction to clinical medicine) taught by Dr. Schwartz for 3 hours on Thursday morning. So, for someone who asked earlier, this won't give you a whole lot of free time that you may not have had. In fact, it's the way it was last year, too. Basically, in the 2nd quarter of MSI year, you are assigned a Dr. to shadow every other week for about 2 hours each time. It's a really neat part of our cirriculum, getting to have some sort of clinical experience during MSI and MSII yeaers--some students had awesome experiences with it (like me, working in an underserved, inner-city, county clinic), but others had fair to poor reviews.

We'll be seeing you all very soon.

For the record, when I was a first year (2000), I didn't start my preceptorship until second quarter anyway (some people got assigned earlier, some started later than I did). During second year, I just went weekly instead of every other week during spring quarter, so I had the second half of that off as well.

Overall, not a huge change....

And it's true about the variability of experiences--some are great, some aren't. Just use the opportunity to get accustomed to seeing "normal" exam findings (ask to listen to as many normal hearts and lungs as possible; appreciate normal reflexes; look at normal ears; etc.....)

this really is a neat part of our school...my bro-in-law is starting at another school this fall and he doesn't see a docs office until his third year!!! (i guess they have a mandatory class over the christmas break to learn about soap notes, but that's it)
the thing with preceptors is it's what you make of it...my preceptor wasn't all that great of a teacher...he didn't let me do much of anything...but i learned a lot of how i'll run my practice...things i'll do, things i won't do, how i'll treat people and how i won't treat people...and like boomer said, try and see all the "normal" you can. When you hear abnormal it stands out at you (in mexico a lady had aortic stenosis and it sounded totally different that even i heard it🙂)

All You Army People

here is the thing...i wanted 2 know how much you get reimbursed for the insurance...u heard the Air Force gets reimbursed for the whole thing and I was wondering why the Army does not???

Please help!!!

try the military pages because there are actually no army hpsp students in the second year class, also i believe the navy gets all they're insurance taken care off, and i know the airforce pays for all of ours, it just gets billed to them like the tuition and fees do, hopefully the same is true for the army

To the Second Year Students

First of all, You all are the best! I just received the disk with all the goodies in my mail box. However, I wanted to let you know that many of the programs on the disk will not open up in the PDF files. Some of the others in the class were experiencing the same difficulty? I'm not sure if you were aware of this problem? But anyway, much of the material is still available on the disk so who cares. Thanks again! 🙂

I ordered some scrubs through SOSA, does anyone know where I can pick them up? I can't be the only one in this predicament!

k i have a question. how do i access blackboard and how do i get on the intranet?

i seem to have misplaced how to do this

http://midwestern.blackboard.com
username is you first.last name (like email) and password is given to you from the school
http://mwunet.midwestern.edu/
is the intranet...
also, to send an email all you have to do is put the persons first.last name (you don't have to write out the whole @azwebmail.midwestern.edu...i was so happy when i found that out)

Does anyone have the big brother/big sisters list?

I need to figure out who I have!

Thanks,
Jason Begalke

Jason, I just looked at my list, and you're not on it...sorry. Try contacting [email protected] put out the list to us in May.

all is quiet on the front....

Okay, here's a question - does anyone know what the overall average was on the biochem exam?

What percentage does it take to get an A? B+?

How should you study for the ICM test, we keep on hearing on how it's going to be "different" and that'll be on the notes and the readings...how much over the readings? I haven't read anything yet!
