Histology: I would recommend Wheater's Basic Histopathology: A Colour Atlas & Text By H. George Burkitt. I really liked that atlas (and so does Dr. Walters).

Embryology: I don't think these two are necessary; I don't even remember them!
Moore 6th Before We are Born 072169408x No Price
Moore 7th The Developing Human 0721694128 No Price

Human Behavior: DO NOT BUY ANYTHING. You will not need any of the books. I got 100% on every test (midterms and finals) for all three quarters and I never ONCE read any book. The notes are sufficient.

OMM: I bought the big, green Foundations book--but never once opened it. I guess it is good to have some kind of OMM reference book, but if you need to save the money, skip this one.

ICM: I liked Mosby's, it is a good book. I guess if you read all that is required it would be good, but I never had the time to do so. It is still a good book for reference of physical diagnosis.

Biochem: No need to buy "The Cell" unless you really struggle with molecular cell biology. My major was molecular biology, so maybe it just seemed very simplistic. However, for the amount that most would use it, you can just check it out of the library, or come use mine (it has never been opened).

A couple of quick comments:

First and foremost: Use the library! It will have copies of all the books you'll need. Remember, you'll have precious little time to spend in textbooks, so save yourself the $$$ and use the library.

Histo: The library has 10-12 different histo boks, and all are used on the exams (although some more than others, like Irish and jhug mentioned). I would check out 3 or 4 histo boks at a time, and just hit everything in the book on my histo checklist. t doesn't take that much time, because most books only have 1 or 2 slides from each structure anyways. Do that until you have gone thru every book in the library. I had seen virtually every slide in the exams previously in my study.

Embryo: Like Irish said, don't buy anything. These are in the library, and they do actually help a lot. One of my favorite things was to get a study room in the library, and use markers to draw the info from the shcematics in the notes and text. Read the notes while doing this, and you pick up embryo pretty fast.

Human Behavior: Like Irish said, don't buy anything. Just get up early and study the handouts for 3 hours before the test. Just make sure that class attendance stays pretty high. It's funny to lok around and see most people studying biochem notes during HB.

OMM: No book needed, at least until boards that is. The notes are kind of weird, but if you study them you'll get pretty good at figuring out what's important. There are weekly quizzes in this class, but they are pretty easy. They'll be over the previous week's material. Unless you really think you'll get into OMM, a book and a lot of study time isn't going to improve your grade that much. The written and practical finals are the big exams here, the quizzes won't mean much.

ICM: Mosby's is good, but it's very detailed. With this class' restructuring, I don't really know how much Mosby's will help you. Try to pick up a cheap Mosby's at the used book sale.

Biochem: All you need is the notes. Know them in and out, before you crack a textbook. The profs are really good about answering questions outside of class.

I found it on the Midwestern intranet, in the online "Registrar's Office:"

atlases are great...but buy them from a second year (or borrow) the bookstore is quite $$...i had the hist book/atlas and didn't really use it much at all (not enough to merit the $$), wheater's (i bought off a second year) and the coveted erlandsen (again from a second year) my little bro is getting all these. I bought the biochem book and used it maybe three or four times (not enough to merit the $$) a classmate bought a neat book off the internet for metabolism that really helped...i'll get back to you on what it's called. I bought the OMM review book and really liked it (worth the $$, imo), didn't buy anything for icm/human behavior...i can't imagine reading all they assign on top of everything else. Netter & Rohen helped me a ton!!!

oh, and don't buy a medical dictionary (which is VERY helpful with the lingo) because you'll get one FREE when you join the AMA!!!!!🙂

And for my plug... 😎

Don't buy a Netter atlas!!!

You get a FREE Netter atlas and CD rom when you join SOMA!!!!

Kick ass! Now as a second year I can join soma, then sale my netter on E-bay to cover my dues!!

Find Cyndi Reed in 2007! This woman has an incredble collection of high yield stuff! She has the answers to every learning objective for every class you will take in both the first and second years. She also has tons of old tests in many subjects and she is good about sharing. This woman is the motherlode of info so seek her out and get stuff that you will need!

Who is Cyndi Reed? Is she a faculty or staff employee, and if so, what office is she in?

we've all been asking ourselves this same question all year....who is she? where is she from? how could she be that smart? is she even human?🙂🙂🙂

She is in the c/o 2007...her SDN name is cdreed

Cyndi,
you were really hooked up with stuff last year...was Linda you big sis or something???

How do people get copies of old exams since they are never handed back to us?

at least that's the form she takes when attending classes. I did see her levitate once though, so she may be more than meets the eye!

Seriously Lt., you've suddenly attained deity status on SDN. Maybe they can give you a halo around your avatar or something. Har.

As far as student clubs go, the Wilderness Medicine Society can't be beat. You'll get to climb out of whatever hole you're studying in and get out of doors with classmates that share an appreciation for practicing medicine outside of the clinical environment. Stop by our booth at clubweek and I'll teach you how to make a traction splint out of a ski pole and a coffee mug.

Besides, will the AMA ever take you canyoneering? 😉

i thought you had to use tube socks and duct tape in everything...🙂🙂🙂

Can anyone reccommend places to get reasonably priced furniture? IKEA isn't opening until November. Thanks and see you all in a few weeks.

Emily's furnature on 59th and bell has a sofa loveseat combo for 499. Other's have mentioned the Room Store in the same strip mall.

I know that gyms have been discussed else where on here, but does anyone have any details about the workout facilities on campus? Hours, types of equipment, availability? I vaguely remember mention of a fitness room, but I could be mistaken (?).

Also, I've seen other threads discussing what people wear to gross anatomy lab. It sounds like, depending on the school, people wear anything from street clothes + lab coat, to scrubs or "disposable" sweats and t-shirt.
Just out of curiosity, what do people at AZCOM where to lab? I know we have a pretty new ventilation system, so is it really so bad as to want to actually throw away clothes at the end of the year 😕

i think the only rule is no open-toe shoes. As for throwing away your clothes at the end...i don't care how good the ventilation is...your clothes are going to smell pretty bad. Even the clothes you change out of when you get to lab are going to smell!!!
Some washed their stuff, i just tossed mine. it was like a rite of passage🙂

Mel,

I took the road less traveled and wore street clothes to lab. There are locker rooms in the lab, but they're miniscule and get crowded fast. I just dropped my stuff off and slapped on an apron, which saved some time. The smell comes out pretty easily in the wash; you just can't plan on doing anything between lab and laundry day!

that is what I bought LOL......havent recieved it yet though since i wanted different colors....it is ok

i fell in love with a lazyboy set but i am not paying 3+ grand for a sofa and loveseat

i woudl also like to know more about that room that the school dares to call a fitness facility.......looked sorta small...are they gonna get some more equipment?

Probably... right after they jack up your tuition.

By the way... That new apartment community called San Prado across 59th from the school is now open. IT IS NICE. My wife and I went over to check it out and to get some info. We are now considering moving there. There is a girl in the office (Kate) who has a husband that goes to AZCOM. She was really cool and helped by giving us the inside scoop on apartments for AZCOM students. If any of you are still looking, which is hopefully not many, you should check this place out.

Wow guys, 14 pages for one thread was a lot to read ? had to split it up over two days. So anyway, here?s my long response/contribution:

I?m an incoming AZCOM 2008?r having just moved, with wife, two kids (8 and 6) and golden retriever, from Beaverton Oregon. We had a great RE agent and bought a place at 43rd Ave. and Union Hills with 28k gallon pool, 2k+ sf and on a cul-de-sac. Homes are great deals here!

MDmiracle and James20062, my wife and I are both Huskies (undergrad) and Seattle U. MBA grads. We?re natives other than bouncing around for my previous high tech career as a software Product Manager.

Snooze7, my wife just finished her first week at St. Mary?s, the largest non-profit in AZ. It?s a $53m a year food bank and she?s loving it. PM me if you want some details on what?s available there for your spouse.

I?m busy painting walls, unpacking and getting the kids ready for school. First thing I did upon getting accepted was sign up my boys for Challenge Charter School, about a mile South of AZCOM on 59th. With input from AZCOM, big bros/sis?s I have purchased most of my books and supplies (diagnostic kit, stethoscope) online and can?t wait to get started.

To our upper-classmen/women, your advice has been sobering. Thank you for the advice now so we can plan ahead ? especially on the rotations. I do have two questions though:

1) What is the UAAO? And how many clubs do people have time to be involved in? As a parent, AMA, AOA, SOMA, SOSA and who knows what else is already getting me nervous.

2) I?ve been considering a WiFi PDA or even tablet PC for reference software, outlining my own notes and annotating lecture notes. Does that make sense? What are students using PDAs for besides medical dictionaries and pharma references? Are any rotations using PDAs for EMR yet?

My biggest concern at this point is that we are spending $34k (twice what my in-state Allo school charges!) and it seems that none of it is going a) to reserve us spots for hospital based rotations and b) for helpful admins that will do some legwork to help us reserve our own MSIII and MSIV rotations.

Thanks for the input and I?m looking forward to meeting lots fellow DOs soon! Orientation starts in just over two weeks!

P.S. I went with Cox for internet, basic cable and even residential phone (via Vonage). I had to pay $69 for the modem, but that way they had it installed before I moved in and since my wife is finishing her JD online, we HAD to have broadband immediately. No Baby Bells here!

Welcome Jgrady,
Congratulations and welcome to the face of the sun errrr...... Arizona. 😀 I used to work and live near Beaverton in fact I graduated from Tigard HS., So it's nice to have someone from home.

Also, I was noticing that there are a lot of us with kids in our class, from the little sample size of SDN and the interact now site on the Midwestern page. I think we should try to set up a babysitters club of sorts and get a list of names and numbers so that when we have late night study sessions or just want to blow off steam we can have the kids in a safe place. I will work on it the first week of school, but for now my wife and I are offereing daycare for just about anything, overnight, late-night, study sessions, work... whatever.

I don't know about everyone else, but I am getting really excited about the upcoming year and want to make us a very close knit group. When it comes to the little ones If any of you need someone to watch them PM me. If you need a permanent day care we can certainly work something out. My wife is going to be staying home with our 3 kids, and has said she wants to help out any way she can.

I am MDmiracle and I approve this message. 👎

And for all of you that will be in town on the Sunday before orientation, I think that that will be the 22nd, SOMA is having a BBQ for the 1st years. It will be from 7P-10P on campus at the "Ramada" (the big covered area in the center of the campus).

All are welcome and please feel free to bring the family!!! 🙂

Hey JGrady and everyone-

Glad to hear of other classmates from the Pacific Northwest. I head down from Spokane on Saturday morning and I?ll be living on campus. Megan, fellow EWU graduate?. I heard you were attending AZCOM as well. I?ve never met you, but are you reading this? Hehe. Look forward to meeting you all?working hard and playing hard 😛

Hey everybody, i've been slowly reading this thread to drop a line when i thought it might help some of you bright-eyed bushy tailed first years, so here goes, as for gyms, school gym is a crock, maybe good for cardio and some arms, its supposed to be getting renovated/enlarged in a year or two so don't wait for that. Join a local gym if you want a good workout, you have lafitness on 57th and bell and then world gym like around 53rd and bell. Lafitness is a bit nicer, more space, pool, racketball and cardio room, you can work a deal for like 25/month and 10 to hold your membership when you're away w/o paying initiation again, try and get the initiation charge off, probably can swing it if you say you're just going to go to World if you don't get it off. I paid $100 because my dude was new and not budging, wasted money. WOrld is 25/month and its definately not bad, no real contract i think, just 25/month. I think about half the people who are in our class joined la and half world, maybe wait until school to see who you want to work out with, ended up half my friends go to one and half to the other so we lift in different places at the same time, kind of rediculous, and you have time to lift, just not a constant 4 days a week, much closer to 0 near finals. ANd theres always voleyball monday afternoon, and we'll have the first year/second year annual volleyball game and football games too just as a heads up.
so for furniture, copenhagen/denmark is just like ikea, except more quality, check it out online, theres 3 in phoenix, and the one warehouse with leftovers which you can get crazy deals at.
Anat lab, some people wear scrubs, some t shirt and jeans or sweatpants. I'm in the surgery club and we're selling scrubs with the mwu logo on them (nicer then last year i believe too) for 20$ as a heads up.
um, thats it i guess, see you all in a few weeks!

#1 - UAAO is the OMM club. I have no idea what it stands for. They're pretty involved on campus.
I have a 6 year old, too, and I belonged to a lot of clubs, and I didn't neglect him. I would recommend seeing what you like and then joining it. Everyone is a med student in these clubs, and everyone is busy, so the schedules aren't ridiculous. No worries. I did/do HOME visits a few times a year (homeless shelters), and am in a few other clubs, as well as SOMA and AMA. I didn't do anything with AMA, but did a few things with SOMA. Just do what you can, and it will be fine.

#2 You get so many paper notes, that I doubt you will use your electronic gadgets for studying the first 2 years. A PDA is useful for looking up drug info, but I still don't have one, and I am totally fine on rotations. I just use the little books, and it's totally ok.

Re: your concerns: This has been discussed ad nauseum. I would go into it, but I'll get flamed by azcomdiddy, most likely, and I feel no need to rehash it. (Do a search based on AZCOM, especially the thread started by Nikki Taylor, and you should be able to get the info you need. I am happy with how my rotations have turned out, mostly, so if you have specific questions or concerns, you can PM me, and I'll be happy to answer your questions.

bravo to your wife to working at St. Mary's food bank. A venerable institution, here in Phoenix.

kristing...it's good to hear from you...i've wondered how you have been!
one more option for the working out is the ymca. it is just south of the thunderbird buisness school (a couple min. south on 57th) they have scholarship type things for low-income people (like us🙂) we've loved it. not as much $$ as gyms but not as flex with scheduling (no 24 hr stuff)

bla 3x,

First I've heard of a SOMA BBQ. Sounds like fun. I will try to drag the kids out for an hour or two, but since it's a school night anything past about 8:30pm is getting a bit late for the K-6 crowd.

kristing,
Thanks for the feedback. MDmiracle provided the link to Nikki's thread you reference, so I'll hunt it down. As for UAAO, it's exciting to know that in a few short weeks, the Class of 2008 will be discovering if we have the hands for surgery and/or OMM. I'm ready to see if I will make a good padawan to the DO Jedi Knights 🙂 .

Forgot to mention a question: With the AZCOM web site as terrible as it is how does one get to student sections like Clinical Education?

Doc Jersey, are you in the class of 2007?

yeah im a 2007'r, i wish they had names on these things and i don't know how to do that nice little catchy quote thing at the bottom, my name is Brent Mittelstaedt, and yes, i am from jersey, actually chillin there right now, can't beat 75 degrees when in az its 110... i now check this thing like every other day so keep firing your questions 2008'rs, see ya soon

Have any of you current AZCOMers had any experience with Verizon Wireless in the Phoenix area? How is reception? I heard that T-Mobile is good, I just don't like their phones. Your cell phone carrier recommendations are appreciated.

My wife and I share a T-Mobile family plan and are happy with it. We both have the blue Motorola phones (V30s?) and they are pretty good. The reception is great to me, but I'm coming from the pitiful AT&T system. The only time reception has dropped for me is on the empty stretch to Palm Springs and in Palm Springs. It's been very good all over the Phoenix area.

Hope that helps...

Btw, what Verizon phones are any good? T-Mobile seems to get the new phones a lot sooner than Verizon, especially the techy ones like the forthcoming smartphones from Motorola, Sony and Treo.

My wife and I switched from AT&T to Verizon this past June. No real problems so far. Coverage has been great in Phoenix. I don't recall yet of having a dropped call. Verizon's plans are a little more expensive- ours is like 400 minutes weekdays and unlimited nights and weekends for $40 a month. Avoid AT&T. Crappy crappy coverage!!!

My two cents on a topic already discussed. What to wear to the anatomy lab. Luke, I still am in awe that you managed to wear your street clothes into and out of lab each day!! I was at your dissecting table 😉 so I know what got on your clothes. I'd recommend getting a cheap pair of scrubs and tennis shoes. Almost all of my classmates threw away there stuff after our last final.

Orientation begins August 25th, right? I remember one problem a lot of students had last year was providing the school with health insurance info. at orientation. You will need to bring this info. with you and fill out a waiver so that you don't get signed up for the school insurance. I think there is like a two week period they give you to find insurance and to fill out the waiver. Its just so much easier if you can find insurance before orientation and then just fill out the waiver.

Another thing about orientation. You'll turn in your vaccinations/titer labs also at orientation and don't worry if they are not complete. I just barely got my last titer drawn last week and it was never a problem. The only mandatory item is that you have insurance.

I own a home less then 1 mile from campus, it's awesome. 3 bedroom, swimming pool, etc....

I'm an MS2 that's lived in Glendale for 4 years....

Let me know if you're interested:

I have had great coverage with Verizon while in Phoenix. I've spent a bit of time there and have never had any problems with it. It is also great in Tucson. I spent two summers in Tucson at the U of A and never had a problem with Verizon there either.

Can anyone post the link to Nikki Tay's thread? I can't find it anymore, but then again I was never one that got along with computers. Thanks.

How/where is best to go about getting these done? I know I have most of the vaccinations and this may be a dumb question, but what is a titer?

sl12 said:

It's just blood samples that they run through analysis for resistance to TB, measles, etc. It is designed to provide a quantitative level of resistance so if you're 84 and AZCOM or whoever says you need to be 85, you have to get vaccinated again.

I got mine done at Kaiser. They take 4 test tubes of blood and have the results back in about 48 hours. Just make sure they know you're doing this for medical school so they get all the tests done you need.

No titer for TB.......skin test.....only immunization for TB not used in US (except in military....maybe not anymore on that one either)

also anyone living at Arrowhear Ranch, can you explain the Phase I, Phase II, (and so on ) cr*p???

I am confused about that, i can't reach the stupid association, and I can't find anything on the net because only phase I seems to have a website.

the people living here before me suck. they left no current info on association or anything else that has to do with the community, no pool key(which i aparently need if i wanna use other gates 2 get into complex) and no card to get through the gate... 😡

sigh

It's all about the Febreze, man. Er, and letting others do the really deep dissecting.

Remarkably, those clothes are still shiny and fresh. Since anatomy's ended, though, the pants I usually wore have been involved in THREE stops at random roadside accidents, and all the stuff one usually sees at such things has managed to wash out. I credit it to the vast amounts of formaldehyde those pants absorbed during our glory days with dear old Bess.

I checked the website earlier this a.m. (thanks for recommending it) and I emailed them to see if there was any sort of a price list. A lot of the stuff looks really nice, so I am hoping it is also not really expensive. Anyways, I got an email back saying that their mailboz was full and they were unable to receive mail. Perhaps AZCOM will sponsor a trip there during orientation and use some of our $1,000,000 tuition to give us gift certificates for furniture. wishful thinking.... Maybe I should just buy a tent and a tv and call it a day with the furniture.
