AZCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hope you guys all the best those who are waiting for replys from the interviews. I recently scheduled an interview at AZCOM for the 23rd this month. anyone have any thoughts on what type of questions they ask and some good hotels around the area?
Hey Johnny & Waytogoo I will also be interviewing there on the 23rd. I'm staying at the Ramada Limited it's only $55 a night and it got decent reviews on tripadvisor. I will be renting a car so I don't need a shuttle, but their are other hotels that offer shuttle service to the school.

Oh trust me I'm in no rush... I was just qualifying my response.

Does it really only take the adcom less than a week to decide on interview invites? I'm complete today so would love to have some positive news sometime soon so I can stop pulling my hair out...

Mine took 10 days after I was complete =)

I have an interview on 10/23. From out of town. I am staying in Tempe and don't have a way to get to the interview in the morning. Any suggestions (bus, cab, shuttle?) I think I'm staying near the red line?

Also, if anyone is coming from the Tempe/Pheonix area for the interview, and is willing to pick me up, I'd be more than happy to pay for the gas money!!🙂

thanks!

My only suggestion is, whatever method of transportation you decide, leave plenty early (at least 1 hr) if you're staying in Tempe. Traffic is horrible going to Glendale at 8AM.

wow..everyone seems to be interviewin on the 23rd..anyone goin on the 22nd? cuz i am! =)

Im interviewing on the 22nd!

Cool! Where are u coming from/what hotel are you staying at? I'm staying at Country Inn..the rooms was just as expensive as my plane ticket, but its close to the school with its own shuttle!

Rei405, and TLE, I'll also be interviewing on the 22nd, flying in on the 21st, and staying at the Ramada Limited. Where are you guys coming from? I'm flying in from DC.

Does anyone remember what they said about class size. Is azcom going to increase the class size to 250 starting next year (for class of 2012)?

I sincerely doubt it. The Admissions person who let the campus tour indicated it might be increased to 175 or 180 for C/O 2012, but that the 250 number was ambitious and still had to be approved by AOA.

I'm also interviewing the 22nd. Staying at the Econo Lodge, I'm flying in saturday gonna spend sunday at the Grand Canyon!!

I think ill rent a car and stay at the Ramada Limited. Its so much cheaper. I'll be flying from Hawaii

Something may have changed, but when we (c/o 2011) had our meeting with Dean Kemper 3 weeks ago she said that the school is on track to increase the class size to 250 for next year and anticipates approval in December.

This is the impression I got at my interview as well.

So I know there are several people (myself included) who have been accepted to AZCOM and were informed via telephone or email but haven't received a letter in the mail yet. Is there anyone here who has been accepted that has actually received a letter from AZCOM?

So how are they planning on adjusting to this? I mean, an extra 75 or so people in the class could be problematic for anatomy lab, or rotation availability, no?. Thoughts?

When I interviewed they said that they were taking steps to make sure the incoming students still had rotation sites available but speaking with students during our interview it sounded like a larger class size could mean more difficulty finding good rotation sites as well as crowded lecture halls, 4-6 students per cadaver in the anatomy lab, etc. The 100 student increase is definitely a turn-off for most applicants right now and justifiably so. Like was mentioned earlier, the student increase has not been approved yet so it isn't set in stone but from what I understand, MWU is trying hard to make it a reality.

It also raises questions regarding admissions this year. Since MWU has a rolling admissions process like most schools, I am sure they want to fill their empty seats as soon as possible. Will they anticipate the approval of the student increase and accept an extra 100 students before December? If so, what will happen to those students if the AOA doesn't approve MWU's request for a larger class?

I'm flyin in from San Diego on Sunday morning and probably spending the day with family (they live a little south of Phoenix). Does anyone know if the Admissions Office has a closet or something that we could put our luggage/bags in???

The impression I got from the assistant dean during my interview day was that The AOA has to approve the increase and will not do so unless AZCOM shows that they are able to accomodate this increase. After interviewees were asking questions about this increase, the assistant dean nicely ended the questioning saying that this increase is not just a shot in the dark, there is a lot of planning that is going on with it and the AOA will not approve it if they do not show how they plan to adjust to this increase. I am not worried.

I interviewed last year and yes they do have a closet where you can put your luggage. There's usually a staff person there too. Just curious as to where you went for UG, UCSD, USD, SDSU?

I too am interviewing on the 22nd coming in from Minneapolis, sounds like a geographically diverse group of people, cool. Is anyone flying out like that evening and need to go to the airport right after the interview? If so, does anyone want to split a cab. I heard it is about 35-40 bucks for a cab ride and I don't really trust shuttles when trying to get to the airport on time.

p.s. For current students, or anyone that knows, are the rotation sites better than those for Western and TU-CA? I have interviews there 2 weeks later but if I do get in to AZCOM, which I hope, I am thinking of dropping out of them because of the week lost of work/money and more importantly precious vacation time I'd rather use to go snowboarding. Thanks!

I heard they dropped their mandatory early preceptorship program for introduction to clinical medicine?!? is this true? That was one of the biggest selling points of this school!

Yes, that's true. From the presentation the Asst. Dean gave us, it seems as though there is still as much clinical exposure as you want beginning in the second quarter.

for those who have interviewed already. what time did you get out of there? I know they said about 2:30pm...but the flight I'm trying to make is at 3:40pm and I want to know if I should book it or not.

thanks!

I'd definitely split a cab with you, but I have to leave at around 1pm to make my 3pm flight out of Phoenix. If you're leaving at the same time, then sure. When is your flight back?

I wouldn't book a 3:40 flight unless you plan on leaving your interview early. The day ends about 2:30, it takes about 45 min to get from MWU to the airport, you should plan on getting to the airport at least 45-60 min before your flight so I wouldn't book anything leaving before 4:30 just to be on the safe side.

thanks for the info! I actually went to UCSD class of '07 =)
did u go there too? nice name btw...are u viet? whatdaPHO...haha

I think you can still do it, but its not required anymore.

good news, kind of. i actually didnt get a rejection, the letter was just stating that im on hold, so theres still a little hope??!!!!

I was upset at first about the preceptorship thing, but it kind of makes sense. You really have to just bust your arse in the basic sciences and focus on that right off the bat. The every-other-week preceptorship sounded fun before I matriculated, but it would definitely be a time-sucker and sort of - well, fluffy (especially considering how little we really know as first-years, which is essentially nothing). You'll get plenty of clinical experience, don't worry.

Anyway, there are still "clinical" opportunities available to those who can find the time. I volunteered at a health fair during my second week of school and took the blood pressures of about 50 screaming children. It was hair-raising. We also have clinical medicine every week, which gives you the riotous opportunity to blind your classmates with your ophthalmoscope whenever you want.

Good luck to those of you waiting on news.

I hope it won't be held against me that I talked about the preceptorship as one of the "why AZCOM" reasons.

I think you should be fine!

I doubt it will matter to them. It is a major selling point, and incoming students may be disappointed to find out it is no longer in the cirriculum (rightfully so). There is no reason why the adcom and powers that be should not hear that.

On the other hand, like Sarikate said, we are so overloaded with work as it is, driving to, and staying at a doctor's office one afternoon every other week just means less time to study for the next exam.

for scheduling interviews, what was your student id?was it the aacomas, ssn, or interact now id??also, is the same system/site used for ccom as well. thanks yall

They send you the ID# to use to schedule your interview when you get the invite. Were you hoping to try to schedule an interview without being invited???

haha, no, well, yes.....actually, my mail is sent home to my parents, so for ccom, i thought it would be easier if i tried logging in once a day, rather than calling my parents every night to ask if i got any mail.

I think they send interview invites through email. Thats how I got mine and I'm pretty sure the login they send is unique so I don't think you'd be able to gain access unless you had a login assigned to you by MWU.

CCOM sends their invite via mail, but if you have MWU id from an AZCOM invite, it will show up before you get the mail.

there are no dates available as of now according the the admin office whats that about?

They probably filled their available dates and haven't selected new ones yet. Maybe give the Admissions office a call. Everyone there is very friendly.

to those accepted, I was just wondering if anyone has received a letter in the mail? My mail carrier has been delivering the wrong mail to my address and I have no clue where some of my mail is being sent to. I am getting very frustrated! Just wondering if I should stop by AZCOM and pick up a letter because there is no hope that the mailman will get it right? Also, did anyone sign onto their interact now accounts this morning... we have a nice message from the school 🙂

I am excited to visit AZCOM i toured CCOM and loved it, so im interested to see what the differences in the schools are!

I am interviewing on the 23rd also, and I am staying at the Marriott Fairfield Inn, and I also rented a car. Have you heard of any possible questions we may be asked in the interview?

I haven't received anything yet.

Nor I, and the mail just came. Spoke with Admissions today; the letters have gone out, so we should receive them soon.

Go to your interact now accounts on Midwestern to check! I got into AZCOM and i'm waiting for CCOM now. Good luck everyone!

I haven't received my letter yet either! I did get the message from MWU on my interact now account though! I just wish I had my letter so I could log in!

what do you use for your student ID? I got my interview but didn't see it anywhere?
