AZCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just thought I'd throw my hat in the ring. Just the got the email this morning (via spam inbox) and registered online. I see alot of you guys are set for Dec from a couple of weeks ago so it sounds like a block interview setup. Anyways, gratz to ya'll and see some of you around on campus.

Question --- Anybody got a scoop on married housing? Is there any? What's Glendale off campus housing like? Hook a brotha up yo...

Yeah, there is no designated married housing but the on-campus apartments in my opinion are pretty nice. They have a sand volleyball court, fitness center, etc. in a gated community. It doesn't make any difference whether you lease an apartment by yourself, with roommates or with your wife. I was told that housing fills up pretty quick though so you have to sign up quick after acceptance.

I have an interview coming up in December and I was just curious about something. Does anyone know if AZCOM offers recordings of their lectures online? I think it'd be helpful to be able to refer back to lectures if needed.

The university has a no picture, no video policy on lectures. They will allow you to voice record the lecture at the discretion of the professor.

That said, it is not really a big detriment not having recorded lectures because your notes are printed out and given to you (in your mailbox) and each slide of a presentation that has pictures will have page numbers for reference. Some of the professors in the anatomy department will use unpublished images or outdated materials, but there are usually plenty of examples in the recommended books.

Also, all the written exam questions come straight from the written notes that you get in your mailbox.

Hope that helps.

For those of you who interviewed during the week of 10/22, has anyone heard yet whether or not they have been admitted? I know we were suppose to hear sometime this week... I am getting a little nervous about the waiting, even though I thought my interview went well 🙁

just call the admissions office and they will tell you

yep... i interviewed 10/25 and called this morning. just call 👍

I just received the secondary app for azcom, and I am having a hard time getting in the frame of mind to answer the 500 word essay. I need more feedback about the school, not from what I have read in the catalog and on various web sites. Could anyone give me some info about what what makes AZCOM such a great school?

Well there a number of things you should know and possibly mention in your secondary.
1) 98% pass rate on the COMLEX exam... which is really good
2) Very challenging program with exams every monday
3) Emphasis on primary care and early introduction to clinical experience
4) They have a specialty clinic on campus that you can find more about on the website
5) They are known for being "innovative" and have been continually making improvements since they opened in 1995

Those are just some of the things I talked about in my secondary. Hope this is what you were looking for.

Weather and location...

Just called: I've been ACCEPTED!

I'm going to be a Dr. :hardy:

For those who have gotten into azcom, are you considering touro ca or nv, if so why or why not? Thanks for your thoughts...........

Okay I would like some input here if everyone doesn't mind. My husband has an interview at AZCOM next month. We really like the school from what we know so far. However I have a really low MCAT score and I'm worried they won't even put me on hold, just reject me. I'm retaking the January MCAT but didn't tell schools because I didn't want to be put on hold until the end of February at least. I know it's not recommended to write a letter of interest until after being put on hold/waitlisted but should I tell them I'm retaking in January or just wait and see what happens? We're actually in the same position now with LECOM-Erie and I guess it's just starting to freak me out. Any suggestions?

Anyone? Anyone?

When were you complete?

I think they are on a interview/application processing hiatus right now because we just wrapped up finals and have a 2 week break ahead. There is also a ton of construction planned for these two weeks that include closing down sidewalks, the library, cutting power to the entire campus while they reroute to a new building, etc.

I wouldn't freak out too much, maybe send a letter once they start interviewing again.

I've only been complete seen 10/31. My husband was complete a week before me and just received an interview this week. I know it's only been a week so I'm not worried about not hearing yet. I'm just thinking about preempting a rejection letter somehow. To be quite honest I was surprised by my rejection from LECOM-B because, in spite of my MCAT score, I feel my app is at least good enough to be put on hold. I just know that once I get a rejection letter from a certain school there's not anything else I can do.

For those of you accepted, did you receive a call from the associate dean? Does he call everyone? 😕
Also if he didn't call, how did you find out you were accepted?

you can call the admissions office, they're generally friendly and helpful. understand that they're busy during this time, but if you explain to them when you interviewed and that you're curious about your status, they'll give up the goods. 👍

No, that's no really my question. I already know I was accepted. I wanted know if the dean calls a lot of people. I called, found out I was accepted, and the next day the dean called me.

but thx though 🙂

I found out about my acceptance on the interact now website. Never got a call from the dean. I wonder how they decide who gets calls and who doesn't...

my apologies, i misunderstood the question.

I got into AZCOM!! Anyone pay the $1,000 yet?😍😛

Hi guys,

I have an interview at AZCOM on 12/3. I am a little weary about the school because of the sky-high tuition of $41,000/yr. Can anyone please justify why they are worth that much? Aside from the for-profit Rocky school, this is the second highest tuition.

Thanks a bunch,
Sorry, just being realistic here....

wary, that's all I have to say.

For me, unless I had no other choice, I'd not go there for two reasons.
1) Their 3rd and 4th yr clinicals aren't disclosed in terms of which facilities they are. The school states "the list changes every year. So, we don't want to tell you we have certain places and tell you differently later. That's why we don't tell you" Well, this isn't an issue at other places I've interviewed at. This is a huge factor for me since it's a sign that they do not have solid connections with the local hospitals.

2) They are opening a dental school and something else...so your tuition is likely to go up every year by.....ALOT....to support this expansion (they are building them now)

CCOM's tuition might be a tad bit higher than AZCOM. But, CCOM is a very established schools with fully disclosed clinical rotation sites in the greater Chicago area. I wouldn't mind paying for CCOM.

realistically, you should get some information first hand about the school. try to get into contact with students there (the pre-DO forums on SDN is not the place for that) and spend some time reading about the school and it's mission statement.

ideally you'll go into this interview having learned about the school from primary sources, not what a bunch of DO-to-be's have to say about it.

A list of rotation sites is nice to look at, but do any of us actually know what it means? I don't even know what goes on at a rotation site. I have an idea, based on what I've read on the clinical rotations forum, and what I've seen at the teaching hospital where I do my volunteer work. I've talked at-length with the students about it, but there is still a lot that I don't understand.

I can also tell you that there is no way in hell that any of us can ascertain the quality of a clincal rotation site by looking at its name on a list. Who cares if they don't tell you where you're going to rotate? Its not like you're going to show up at med school, and Dr. Farva is going to say "Oh ****! I got you good, you ****er! You're doing all your rotations at the first aid tent at Ironman Arizona!"

The way they work is that they will educate you on each site, and typically, each student will give a list of preferences for each rotation. I am pretty sure that most students get to rotate at their top choice most of the time. People will want to go into different fields, so you're not going to have the whole school signing up for the same sites. Different strokes for different folks.

AZCOM has a good reputation. This is not something I'd worry about with them.

nice post Texas..

I was accepted to AZCOM and have been very concerned about this whole rotation site issue. Its true i dont know the difference between a "good" site and a "bad" site, and unless i decide now what i will do my residency in, I dont know which type of rotations are most important to me.

I also know there is a lot of concern about the increased size class. But AZCOM still has over 2 and a half years to expand the rotation site list before the class of 2012 gets to those rotations. A lot can be done in that time and im banking on AZCOM's good rep that they will do a good job.

Okay so I'm on the preinterview waitlist. 🙁 I will be mailing out a letter of interest on Friday though so hopefully that will help. My husband already has an interview there so it would be great if I could get one as well.

I just turned down my interview there, so hopefully that helped open a spot for ya :luck:

has anyone else found out that they got into ccom through the azcom matriculation agreement?

To show the randomness of this whole process, I was accepted to CCOM mid-Oct, yet placed on pre-interview hold at AZCOM today.

I admit, though that I didn't get my 2ndary out to AZCOM until Oct, but I'm having an ironic chuckle right now.

Dave the Lighting Guy: Everybody say, "Geddy Lee!" Joe Young: Who's Geddy Lee?
Dave the Lighting Guy: Geddy Lee, best bass player EVER, come ON!
I don't wanna sound like a queer or nothin, but I think unicorns are kickass.

anyone get taken off the hold list yet for an interview? when i emailed em about a month ago, if there was any changes to my app status, i was told "you are still on the wait list".

I agree. I was accepted right away to Touro-CA but waitlisted for Touro-NV. I actually thought the interview went much better in NV, too! Just goes to show you that this whole thing can be so very subjective, since obviously my stats didn't change! Strange...very strange.

I had a similar thing happen... I sent my secondaries to CCOM and AZCOM within the same week. Well a week after I interviewed at AZCOM (and eventually got accepted) I got a rejection letter from CCOM. No pre-interview waitlist or anything.

Why do I feel like everyone is having a negative opinion about AZCOM. Yes their class size is expanding...but thats due to the shortage of physicians..class size expanding isnt a horrible thing...There are plenty of schools that already have a class size of around 250...Nova being one of them. The rotation sites...first they have 2 yrs to get more rotations..MORE than enough time...they ARENT going to leaving you stranded...lets remember this is a Midwestern university that also has a PA school and a Pharm school...they have the interests of their students in mind...Tuition...fine its expensive...if you dont like it and you get in somewhere else...thats your choice...to be honest...no matter how you look at it...if you are not an instate resident for a med school you are going to have MASSIVE loans...so you might as well pick the school you want to go to...b/c in the end its better to be happy where you are than be in a place where you are depressed.

The reputation of AZCOM is great and I feel like people are undermining the school due to the fact that its expanding its class size and is trying to figure out the rotation sites for 2 yrs later. TouroCOM, the new school in seattle, and a bunch of other schools that start off all have the same issues in the beginning...it will work out.

Does anyone feel the same way I do, or is everyone this negative about a school that has a descent reputation?

It is refreshing to hear your input on the negative opinions of AZCOM. Maybe I am just blinded by how much I love the school, but I have literally zero concerns about attending. I only went to two other interviews because I had not heard from them yet and once I did get accepted, I declined two more interviews. I definitely feel like a minority around here.

I also think that students on this forum have a way of taking any thing they hear and drilling it to death with questions and concerns. I realize that is a main purpose of this site, but I feel it leads to people reading one comment about something and spreading "the news" without much knowledge of the situation.

yes, I hear you gt2007!!! we are on the same wavelength. i was just about dead set on AZCOM when i got the acceptence. location, school, move away from family (but not too far), everything...just fits for me. but reading all these posts by premeds and a couple die hard haters from AZCOM got me down for awhile.

i have no problem with people posting concerns about thier schools but when you hate so much over and over it gives YOUR SCHOOL a bad rep. these peeps from PCOM practically sell thier school on SDN and thus everyone loves PCOM. I didnt even apply thier but i feel i should go there from just what i hear!

anyway, i just like to see positives posts about AZCOM from time to time. the school has a good rep but yes people are shakey about the expansion. I just figure i'll have more classmates to work with and to refer patients to me later on!

Yep..I was actually just hopping on to ask the same thing. I received my pre-interview waitlist letter the first week in October. Does anyone know when the waitlist people may start to get contacted. Just from reading thru threads it seems like there are quite a lot of us!

I agree! I have stopped coming on here for a while because I was just hearing negatives. I know a lot about the school and am not concerned about anything that others are. Every school has things that are good and bad and I think that AZCOM has an excellent repuation for being a fairly new school and they are related to a very established school. They know what they are doing as does the AOA. No one considers the fact that AZCOM could not implement the expansion unless they are approved for it. They would not get approved unless they had clear ways of accomodating the increase. From what I know of the school, they have excellent facilities and professors. I know several of the doctors that are possible rotation sites for students and they are all wonderful, so if that is a representation of the other rotation sites then I am confident they will be good. Every student I have ever met that goes there always seems very happy with their choice of schools. It seems to be a helpful community of students. The facilities are great... and the things that were not so great are being redone or a new building is being built. GREAT location as well! Also, I am not sure why people put schools down. If they don't like it, don't go there. There are schools that I do not like. Rather then wasting my time talking about my gripes, I give encouragement for the school of my choice.

*on a side note, I have also heard from some of the physicians that students rotate with that AZCOM students are alway more prepared for rotations then students from other schools..... this is one of the main reasons I choose AZCOM! Obviously the professors at AZCOM are doing something correctly in their teaching if they prepare students so well for rotations and board exams!

Having between 98% and 100% pass rate on the boards is indicative of the preparation the school provides. It is no wonder the physicians speak highly of them.
On a side note, I definitely feel the same way about people continuously putting down certain schools that they were either rejected from or no nothing about. I even had people on my interview practically interrogating the head of biological sciences about what changes they were going to make for the increase. No one has any evidence based information about how bad rotations are going to be because they clearly havent happened yet for the class of 2012.

I personally feel that a large scale increase of students is a terrible idea when they are already struggling for rotation sites. Why shouldn't the administration and faculty be questioned at an interview. Interviews are not just for you to explain yourself but for the school to also explain itself to you. This class increase and lack of planning makes me worry. Are you willing to throw your 40K+ a year towards a school that can't provide you with decent clinical rotations. Does anyone know if AZCOM has officially announced it's class size for next year???

I agree that interviews are a good time to ask questions, but there is a right way to go about it. That is if you want to be have a chance at acceptance. The response the director gave during my interview was actually quite complete, which implies that there is no "lack of planning." Oh and I think I did hear somewhere that they were officially approved, but I could be wrong.
