AZCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know when you are arriving in AZ this summer? I'll probably get there pretty early as I get lots of time between my current job and school (30-45 days, less driving time). If anyone else gets there early, we should meet or something. I haven't heard any particulars from my boss yet, but I've been promised lots of time. Cheers

We (the fam and I) probably won't get there until a week or so before school starts.

First loan refund checks don't come until a week after school starts so I will need to work right up until I leave.

Of course it all depends on where we live and when we can move in. We haven't got that figure out yet.

Yeah. I haven't even started talking to apartment complexes. The one's I've heard about listed on this forum are WAY out of my price range. Hopefully I can find one! 🙄

I'm here already! come visit and look for apartments 🙂

We are planning on moving out at the end of July/beginning of August. Our lease will be up July 31, so really right around that time we will be heading out.

Will you be on campus this Friday? I know it's spring break but I just thought I would check. My interview is on Friday and I'm getting nervous. :scared:

We are hoping to buy a house in may and then move in July. Good luck eel, you will do great!

Know of anywhere really cheap in glendale? (think $400-550). I've seen some places on the internet, but I hesitate to just plunk some money down sight-unseen. I DO have lower standards than most people, though, so it might work out okay.

GOOD LUCK!! You'll be fine. I'll see you in a few months. Just relax and be yourself. The admissions guys for my interview were really nice. They told me after the interview that they like to ask really off the wall questions (ones you can't prepare for). I got "what is the biggest mistake you've ever made, and how did you recover from it" and "what would you do if you saw someone cheating blatantly off your Monday morning exam?" Other people got "what song are you?" It was wierd, but relaxed. No sweat.

...it made me cry

but not in that "wow that was so touching way" more in the "im scared..i want my mommy" way
wow, glad i missed most of that conversation. i am crying to mommy after i got my mcat scores yesterday. 21P...ouch. here is my question...i have a 4.0GPA, but with only a month to study for the MCAT, and not even having ORGO under my belt, those MCAT scores suck. What do you guys think, should I just sign up to take it again, or try to rely on my GPA and interview skills? let me know.

don't stress...they take into account nervousness... just be yourself. they will love you. your ability to be calm in the face of disaster will speak volumes.

good luck eel08!!!

Thanks everyone!! 😀 I might actually like some off the wall questions. I feel like those are ones that I might be able to answer a little more easily. I still want to go over more of the interview feedback. I head to the airport in about 52 hours!! I'm trying not to be nervous but I'm not successful yet. 😛

More off the wall questions..

I was also asked there "What would your wife say is your worst quality?"

and

They asked me the one about catching someone cheating too.

So prepare for those.

Is it wrong to answer that my husband better not say I have any bad qualities?

they don't always ask off the wall questions. The only "strange" question I was asked (i'm a musician) was

"What song are you thinking about now that would be describe this interview?"

My answer was "Under Pressure" by Queen/David Bowie. We all had a really great laugh.

My only real advice would be to bone up on your knowledge about Phoenix/AZ and how DO's practice there and Physicians in AZ. There was a AZ Do on my panel, who appreciated the "How are DO's treated in AZ?" question I asked. (I'm from the east coast where DO's are really accepted, and there really is almost no discrimination between MD/DO)

A friend of mine just got into DCOM with a 21 MCAT. I would say, do apply this cycle if you can afford it, but meanwhile start studying to retake the MCAT. Or at least, start studying orgo. The GPA will definitely help. Not everyone is great at standardized tests. Admissions people do look at the MCAT as an indicator of success in med school, though, so be prepared to explain your score and do try to raise it by a few points. Good luck!

lol, well you'd have to lower your standards to having a roommate if you weren't planning on that already? IF you do have a roommate, you can live anywhere for that price range though. Otherwise you are looking at lower standards of 600-700 range and a little higher standards of 700-900 range for a single bedroom! Sorry!

thanks therapy ball, i hope that a 21 is good enough, but a big part of me says to just take it again, as it is not indicative of my potential. we shall see in a few weeks if there are any nibbles. if not, i will wait until this semester is done and apply myself after a few months of solid study. i think it hurt me to try and take it with such a short study time. alas.

I wish I was already there! South Carolina weater sucks right now (I usually love it here, but it's been raining and hail and crazy wind for a few days).

ehem....I live in Michigan. It is snowing, windy, and freezing. It is painful to go outside, and each morning i spend 20 minutes scraping snow and ice off of my car. MSU hasn't had a snowday since the 70s...I would KILL FOR A RAIN STORM IN SOUTH CAROLINA!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed.
I am in Ohio and not only is it cold and snowy, but we have gray skies everyday. I can't wait for that Arizona sun!!!

😎😎😎😎😎

We're up to 49 degrees today here in Salt Lake City!

I feel like putting on a pair of shorts.

I know, I know. I've been completely spoiled the past few years living in SC. I love it here, I really do. Rain sucks, anywhere, and I did my time in the ice and snow. I lived in Ohio in college, and I will never look at snow like a good thing again. That's why I chose AZCOM over KCUMB. No snow. No ice. No freezing rain. No doughnuts on I-675 b/c I hit a snow drift when the exit lane wasn't totally plowed on my way to my parasitology exam. God I hate snow. Rain sucks, but it's a very relative scale. Snow sucks WAY more!:luck:

I have my interview on March 25th and I am trying to prepare for it! I am very excited and nervous at the same time 🙂
I was wondering if you are interviewed individually or with other students? Thank you!

Individually

35 minutes

3 interviewers.

In my case the interviewers were 2 local DOs and a 2nd year student.

My interview was yesterday. By far the best interview I have done, at least in terms of being myself and not freaking out 🙂 I was interviewed by myself, and there were 3 interviewers- a med student. a professor, and a DO. I really really hope we get in, my wife LOVES the area. Now the waiting begins.....

my off the wall question was: if you could be one appliance in the kitchen what would you be

And what did you say? I think I can handle questions like that. It's some others that I'm scared of. :scared:

sorry to everyone that is in the cold/snowy/rainy/cloudy weather! Clear 80 degree skies here today... just something to look forward to if you are coming for a interview soon or for next year 🙂

first i said fridge, cuz thats probably the appliance i spend the most time in, but i took it back and told them a juicer, so i can convert food from one form to another maybe making it more consumable for a person

Any cleanish, quiet people out there need a clean-ish quiet roomie for next year! I have furniture (which I'll probably be able to get to AZ when the time comes). By quiet, I mean you don't feel the need for the people living in Maine to hear your music, not cowering in your room b/c your afraid to make a peep. I've had bad luck with roomies in the past, so the prospect of living w/a practical stranger is terrifying to me, but I can adapt, improvise and overcome.

:luck:

60C in Northern New Mexico...Got a sunburn yesterday at the hotsprings.

it is funny that you say MSU hasn't had a snow day since the 70's...in NM, everyone panics if there is an inch of snow. people don't leave their homes, and driving down the road you see twenty cars in the ditch. people aren't the best drivers in any inclement weather...

oh haha, that reminds me, if it rains... um no I mean drizzles... eh, actually, just a cloudy sky with a drop of rain, it seems as though everyone in AZ panics and forgets how to drive! okay... so maybe it is not that bad, but people here do not know how to drive when it is raining outside! Hell, I forget how to turn my windshield wipers on sometimes...

People in SC don't know how to drive...period. Worst drivers I have EVER seen, and I've been all over the country. Traffic is never bad though (comparatively).

Does anyone happen to have a blueprint showing what AZCOM campus is expected to look like this fall with all the new construction completed? I keep reading about the addition of something like 6 buildings and was curious to see what we can expect what the campus will look like.

man... I just got back from AZ and I already miss it! It really doesn't help that when I landed in Detroit, it was really cloudy, gloomy, snowy and cold... AZCOM and Glendale were far nicer than I anticipated! And the lunch they served us was actually decent! First interview that didn't serve us some plain old sandwich!

Since my interview was this past thursday, and my school was also on spring break that week, my wife and I hung out a little bit and did some exploring around town. For anyone who didn't get a chance, let me just say that 1.) the people are ridiculously nice everywhere we went - frequently offering you water, or just taking 5 minutes out of their day to ask you how your day is going, where you're from, etc). 2.) Everyone has to at least once go up to Dobbins Point on the south end of Pheonix and watch the sun set. Seriously, I still am in a state of awe... most incredible sunset I've ever seen! 3.) Don't hug the cacti... even if you think it'd make a good photo...😛

dont know if this has been asked or not, but does anyone know how full the class of 2012 is as of now? thanks.

I interviewed on Friday and I believe they said that anywhere from 120-140 seats are taken. So over 100 spots still left. Hopefully 100+ -1. 😉

😆 I love #3!! I was just there on Friday and it was sooooo gorgeous! I didn't have time to go anywhere other than Surprise where I was visiting a few daycares. It was hard to leave but I know next time I'm there it will be to live.

I agree, Surprise is awesome! That is great you were able to check it out. The Dysart school district there is great as well. We are almost definitely buying a house in that area. I am glad your interview went well! Hope you get good news coming your way soon!

When can we hear back from the interview last wed?

We've lived in Surprise since my husband was accepted to AZCOM in '04 and have had a pretty good experience. (Both with AZCOM and living in Surprise.) And yes, the Dysart schools have been great. All three of our kids have had mainly wonderful experiences. The only school in the district I'd recommend avoiding is the Early Childhood Education Center.

If you're looking to buy a house, the prices are falling pretty substantially around here. Look around and maybe even contact some builders. They might be willing to swing you a deal, just to get the lot sold. This is completely anecdotal, but a friend who bought her home about 2-3 years ago for $240K just found out that their builder is selling her same floor plan in the newest section of their subdivision for about $150K.

Good luck, everyone!

Reality hits you about the time you get your first exam grades in your mailbox. And you look at this 63% and think, I needed 70% to pass and I don't see how I could have studied any harder. Meanwhile, some of your classmates are complaining that they only got 93% or 98%. You get assigned a tutor at this point. Then the killer anatomy/anatomy lab/histology/histo lab quadruple hitter comes along in about week 4 and knocks a few people right out of medical school. You have studied harder for this exam than any other exam in your life and you barely pass.

It's right around this time that you realize you are in deep doo-doo and you need to work even harder to pull through this first quarter. And you can look forward to the second quarter when you are taking all the same courses, plus physiology as well.

And that's when you realize you're in medical school. So enjoy the thrill of getting in while it lasts. The ride is only beginning 🙂

Come on now, no reason to be that negative to the incoming guys and gals. I will admit, there are times I think I should have just taken that acceptance letter, framed it, then went on to teach high school biology and ethics....but there are good days too. Med school is tough...but everyone is toughing it out too, so at least you realize everyone is suffering with you.

I would be surprised if you can find one.

I'll tell you what they are working on....

Glendale Hall
-dental
-clinical staff offices

Activity center
-raquetball
-indoor basketball?
-weights/cardio
-yoga room
-music rooms

Nondenom worship center

Additional admin building

Doubling of the research center

Renovating the 3rd floor
-moving out all clinical offices
-replacing with more study rooms

2 more apartment blocks(there are like 8 there now, so not many more)

Parking deck
-in the planning stage, wont be done for a minute

2,800 seat Auditorium
-can be used by the county for functions
-will have the largest capacity of any current 'hall'...our biggest now holds 500

Cool, thanks! I did love the school and the area. I actually won't be deciding to go elsewhere since I already gave up my one acceptance. My husband interviewed and was accepted at AZCOM in December and has paid his deposit. I'm really really hoping I get accepted but if not we'll still be out there in August. I'll just have to spend all my extra time stalking the admissions committee so maybe they'll let me in for next year. 😉

I was bored last night so I decided to make a background for my computer, thought I would share it! Go Class of 2012! 🙂
