AZCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

what is a good airline/airport to fly into for azcom? i was thinking southwest and phoenix ?

Southwest is nice because you can check in the night before and pick your own seat on the plane (if you get in the first boarding group). Fly into phoenix

Hey everyone. I just wanted to check in again and see if anyone remembers how long it took to get the secondary from AZCOM after they received the primary app. Thanks!

I submitted my letters through Interfolio 3 weeks ago, and still I am incomplete. I have been calling them almost everyother day (interfolio department at AZCOM and admissions), either they don't return the voicemail, or say they are running behind. Yet, I just got a email today from them telling me how im incomplete, LIKE I ALREADY DONT KNOW. I am already sick of this school. Not picking up, not returning emails, not returning voicemails, is this a medical school or a joke?

Yeah, I submitted my letters via Interfolio on 7/20 and I wasn't complete at AZCOM until today. ANNOYING! How long were people "complete" before they were selected for an interview?

Your story is my story, except I am still not complete.

You have to pester the administration. They've behind on everything because even though DOs and Podiatry students started, they're still prepping things for the other classes coming in 2 weeks.

Just give them a call and they'll move you quickly.

That's what I'm doing. Also, I have read many posts about people saying that you should only do 100% carry-on. Considering the massive coronary one would have if the airline lost your checked luggage containing your suit this is understandable.

But how can you put your suit in carryon? It will look like a mess when you take it out, and yeah I know you can iron it out but it just seems like a bad idea. As does wearing it on the plane, as I am sure something would get on it. Murphy's Law....

I used a suit/garment bag, like this one:

http://www.orvis.com/store/productc..._mmc=Nextag-_-Prod_feeds-_-Prod_feeds-_-83094

Just do a google search for "suit carry on" or something and you'll find something.

As for the airliner, Southwest works if you're within a neighboring state, but I came out from TX, so AA was my airline of choice.

As far as airport, there's really only Sky Harbor in Phoenix that is your option.

Can anyone who actually goes to AZCOM tell me a little bit about the lifestyle there? Like living situation/expenses, if AZCOM has a gym or not, if there is a place to study after hours on the campus, what class is like, if classmates general help each other out or not? Thank you!

Hey everyone,

Just got my interview invite via the portal today. I scheduled it for the first available, Friday September 18th. I may drive it (from Indiana) just for a mini vacation, also I'm 25 so car rental is a tad cheaper.

Hope to see some of you there! Good luck!

I'll give it a shot. PM me if you want to know something specific.

Living: Lots of choices. AZ housing cheap due to foreclosures, but Glendale is still kind of pricey. Plenty of apartments, ranging from 750-900 for a nice studio to 1050 for a 2/2.

Gym: AZCOM has a rec center and a tiny 1 room gym, but for many people this isn't enough. There's 24 hr fitness and LA fitness nearby campus.

Study: There is a 24 hr study lounge that is moderately full now and then. Library tends to open till midnight except on Fridays.

Class: Pretty standard. 9-5 and each day differs. Labs in afternoon (2013 hasn't had any yet).

Classmates: Yeah we help each other out. The azcom2013.com site helps with this, along with Facebook. It'll be hard to find a school these days where the faculty want the students to go to war with each other.

Anyone going to AZCOM right after ATSU-SOMA? Interviewing at SOMA sept 21st. Might stay around there or take a cab up towards azcom after the interview. AZCOM interview date the 25th of sept. Let's hang out for the week! I'm sooo dreading sitting in my motel 6 room for 4 days doing nothing but prepping for the AZCOM interview. ($30/Night!) I'm willing to split a better hotel room with someone for half the price? I think I'll need a companion. Don't think I could survive the entire week w/out anyone to talk to. Can't believe i'm going to be stuck in az w/out a car cause I'm not 25yo. I wish i could rent!

Hey guys! I just got my interview for the 21st! So excited. does anyone know is CCOM invites are soon to follow?

Should be this week or next. I know....this wait for CCOM is killer.
I believe the first invite (from last year's thread) was reported on August 24th.

Agreed! They still don't have my letters because Interfolio had a glitch!! I finally got them to fix it and give me some free deliveries which was sweet, but I hate how it slowed down my process.

where do people find material to learn enough about azcom in order to write a short essay as to why it's education is so good?

I couldn't find a whole lot about AZCOM, but I managed to get 250 words on paper after reading Elijah05's suggestion in another school thread:

Elijah05 said:
"curriculum/research/community opportunities/location/any other BS...lol. Those are probably the 4 main things every school will see. If you dont know a lot and thats the best you can come up with then that is that. I dont know about [school name] but some schools really do understand that you wont know a lot about the school until you are there..."

woo hoo got an interview 😀

Is the Midwestern University Clinic open to 1st and 2nd year med students as well, or is solely for clinical rotations?

Can someone who goes to AZCOM reply to the pros/cons thread linked in CB's sig? I read that there was difficulty in clinical rotation placements for AZCOM students. Is this true?

You might want to try one of the older DO class threads from 2011 or 2012. They don't have class until next week so some of them might respond.

I'm guessing that when everything has been received with a green check-mark, the file is complete? If so, mine was complete yesterday. I'm just wondering, how long did it take everyone to receive an interview invite?

For those of you worried about rotation spots, don't be. Here is a direct quote from our Student Government President:

"As for rotations spots in Arizona, we already had enough clinical rotation spots in Arizona, but Ohio was secured for the students that would like to have the more traditional ward focused education that is modeled more after an allopathic school. We are working our way towards as many ward based rotations as possible for third year, but as I attend our Dean's council meetings, every month we are updated with new hospitals and new offers to the schools for in state rotations. So don't worry about Arizona rotations, if Arizona is where our students will want to stay, rest assured they will stay and have quality rotations."

I am MSI at AZCOM, if anyone has any specific questions feel free to PM me (just be patient if I don't respond right away, as the classes are really starting to pile on...)

Have you checked out rates for renting cars for people under the age of 25? It's not that you can't, it's just that you have to pay a little extra for the insurance. My boyfriend and I rented a car last year on a vacation (we were both 23) and it came out to be less than $25 per day. So check it out if you really want a car badly.

this is my first invite but i am wondering (theoretically) if i recieve a relatively early acceptance to azcom before i interview or find out of acceptances at other schools, can azcom force me to make a decision of accepting or not before i know all my other options?

AZCOM, like almost all DO schools, follows AACOMAS guidelines for acceptances. If you are given an acceptance before November 15, you have until mid-December to decide if you are going to attend and put down a deposit. That is one reason why early application is important, you have a lot fo time to decide, especially if it is between multiple schools.

Does anyone know what percent of interviewed applicants receive offers of admission from AZCOM? Is it me or do they interview a lot of people out of those who submit secondaries? I am just wondering about this?

When I interviewed this past year, a rep from the admissions office said that about 300 people are chosen for interviews for the 250 seats. So it's a huge weeding out process up until the interview; once you get an interview though, it's a high probability you're in.

That seems like a really low number. Even if they accept all 300, I don't think you can't count on 250 of those students actually deciding to matriculate.

I thought they accepted around 450 total last year. They might be more selective this year but I doubt it'll be as low at 300.

I just scheduled my interview for October 16th.

And about extra LORs: I called about a week ago to ask about this, and they told me they would look at extra letters if you want to send them.

I got an interview invite as well!!!! 😀

interview invite as well...which was a surprise as I don't have my DO LOR in yet...

Interview here, as well. Found it by accident and nearly vomited.

Complete 8/24

Originally scheduled for 9/25, but had to reschedule for 9/23 due to DMU interview. I can tell this is going to be an expensive few months!

It's gonna be an expensive few years!

An acceptance is gonna be so worth the cost of travel though.

can someone please post what the secondary app is like? what questions or essays? how many words or characters? thanks. Im considering adding them to my list of schools.

I received Midwestern (AZCOM) secondary. They require to download a CV or resume with all the volunteer and work experiences. Are you guys just list those or explain also in a couple of sentences what you did. It is already on AACOMAS so I don't see the point. I am just afraid it is going to be way to long for me.

Any advice?

It's best to upload your resume/CV because its a semi-closed interview. They have your resume, secondary essays and personal statement, so if you don't mention your activities there, they won't know about them. Personally, I did a resume and then my interviewers asked questions to learn more; I'm more familiar with the format of a resume than a CV.

When I interviewed, they had AACOMAS's activities and stuff listed, but my interviewers were definitely more focused on my resume/CV since I made it as concise as possible. I also put my numbers on there, which they noted they were not supposed to know but were happy to have anyway. In other words, don't put any scores on there unless you want to.

I think the resume is a great way to magnify some of your research or clinicals that would make for great interview discussion. I put my research and experiences immediately after my education listing and also made the font a bit bigger (not enough to make it look ridiculous though). I don't know if it'll work for everyone but it certainly helped them notice what I had done.
