AZCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What is a good deal you got? I'm looking for a reasonable price apart. to stay. The apart. looks ok from there website. Let me know if you have any more infos. Thanks

I just did an apartment search on some website and got these results for places nearby http://phoenix.apartmenthomeliving....universities/midwestern-university-apartments

I emailed Greentree apartments (~3 miles away from campus) and they have some nice deals for students, I don't know if the quality of the place is any good or not.

Hey guys
So I am trying to decide if I should attend my interview at AZCOM scheduled in February.

I've been accepted to a school I really loved (UNECOM), and can't decide if it's worth the cost to check out AZCOM.

I suppose it makes sense to look at every school which invites you for an interview because you never know how much you might like a school until you visit.

For those that have interviewed there-what do you think? Is it a school I really owe myself the opportunity to check out? I know this is a tough question, but I'm wondering if it might be the type of school that will really blow me away.

What do you guys think?

I'd say go. The school had a big and beautiful campus (they have other programs there as well) that would be valuable to see in person. The surrounding area was also nice to see. It was also good to talk to students there at lunch.

Before you guys go any further, I recommend checking out San Prado and San Lagos. Both complexes are about a block away with San Lagos being literally across the street.

My interview is on the 24th, I was wondering if there is any other cheaper way to get from AZCOM to the PHX airport besides SuperShuttle? Thanks.

Maybe one of the rental services that run out of SkyHarbor:
http://skyharbor.com/TransportationParking/RentalCars.html
Somewhere in one of the previous ~2-3 pages I posted a link that included the MWU discount for Enterprise (which should also wave <25 fee...I believe).

Taxis would likely run you about the same as the shuttle or a rental, if not more:
http://skyharbor.com/TransportationParking/LimosAndTaxis.html

Hopefully this is of some help, but unfortunately pretty much anything that doesn't involve somebody you know picking you up is going to run anywhere from $50-100. Best of luck with the interview.

EDIT: Thought I'd be nice and just provide the link to the discount again...

After I calculated out the cost of super shuttle and taxi vs renting a car, I figured that renting was cheaper and more convenient. If you use the discount code from enterprise its not a bad deal. I think I paid $100 for two days and I was able to drive myself around to other places rather than being limited to campus and the hotel.

i'm sure other people have asked about this, so sorry for the redundancy, but anyone have any info on on-campus housing for married folk? thanks guys.

The on campus housing should be on the Student Services tab on your online.midwestern.edu account page.

As for being married, there are families that live on campus, include several in my building. The kids don't make too much noise though, so it's not something I think about until I see a few of them running around as I'm coming home.

I highly recommend living on campus if you have the option to. Sign up immediately if you're even thinking about it since I believe the deadline is approaching (end Feb - early March).

On that note of student housing: Have you seen or do you live in one of the studios or the one-br.'s? I put in for one of those and was wondering how spacious they are. Also, there are options for different buildings and they are the same price... 🙄 are they a different layout? Anything you have to say about on-campus housing would be super helpful!

I live in a studio and have a queen-sized bed, 6-foot couch, end table, tv stand, tv, 2x3 bookshelf, 2x4 dresser, and a tiny "kitchen" table with a couple of chairs set up comfortably in mine. There's plenty of room to move around in/put clutter in/writhe around on in studying-induced agony/etc.

A friend of mine has a one-bedroom + den and it's essentially a two-bedroom. They actually have a dining room, bedroom, and a media room since it's just them living there. I'm not really sure how it compares to the regular and luxury one-bedrooms though.

As far as the layouts for the "same" floor plan in different buildings go, I think if it's the same floor-plan/price, it offers the same general options/size with some variations in how the square-footage is actually spread out (Flushot, correct if I'm wrong).

How about San Lagos apart. complex crossing the campus?? I checked its website and it looks pretty nice and new with comparable price to on-campus housing. They also offer 9 month leases. Any comment would be helpful. Thanks.

I'm not going to be of much help there (though I've not heard anybody say anything bad about them). If you search "san lagos" on here (top of page), you should come across posts in forums from previous years, in which I think Flushot gave some feedback about San Prados and Lagos. That's about the best I can offer.

Reminder to everyone who's been accepted... join the AZCOM 2015 Facebook group!

http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=158051064214073

Maybe we can start some "less official" discussions there (i.e. hobbies, instruments... the Superbowl?). I really need something to do while I'm bored at work! Just finished my taxes and my FAFSA... which BTW - not a bad idea even for those of you that haven't been accepted yet, just make sure you add in all the schools that you've applied to when you fill it out.

I just got an interview invite from WesternU on Feb 24th, the same date as my AZCOM interview.

So, I was wondering if any of you can swap with me with an interview in February (like 23rd, 25th, 28th) or March; that'd be most helpful 🙂. (I am out of the country on April 🙁) Thank you.

I know you're out of country April but I have an interview April 1st and I'd be willing to trade (is that even possible?)

I have an interview at AZCOM on April 1st. Being relatively late in the cycle, am I interviewing for a spot on the waitlist, or will there still be acceptances to be given out?

I'm interviewing on Feb 28 and I'm wondering the same thing, but in the end it doesn't really matter. We still need to get out there and just give the best interview possible. Hopefully for both of us there are at least 2 spots left. 😀

Watch the portal religiously, an earlier date is almost guaranteed to open up.

word brotha! although, I'm already "out there". lol i've lived 2 miles from campus for the past 14 years 😉

Hi everyone, just a minor update and to answer a few questions.

April 1st is definitely not the last interview date. Looking at the portal. The following dates are available at the moment:

Thursday Morning, Feb 24, 2011 Monday Morning, Apr 4, 2011 Tuesday Morning, Apr 5, 2011 Wednesday Morning, Apr 6, 2011 Thursday Morning, Apr 7, 2011 Friday Morning, Apr 8, 2011 Monday Morning, Apr 11, 2011

(Hint, hint, Feb 24th)

Likewise, I have successfully changed my interview date from the 24th to the 22nd 😍. Like a previous poster has said, watch the portal religiously (for me, every 30mins-1hr).

People will drop out of interview dates!! Even more so near the end/deadline.

Oh, my gawd. Quick supermang!! I just dropped by Feb 24th!! 3 minutes!

Haha, I dunno about checking every hour, but try to check at least twice a day. It changes all the time without notice, so you can move up.

This is also when they start pulling people off the interview hold. I know a lot of people asked about this last year and I haven't been keeping up, but I'm sure it is similar this year.

Anyhow, good luck to everyone and let us know how it goes.

Hi Guys,
New to SDN. I found out today that my app is on the interview waitlist at AZCOM. Now I know that its not a flat out rejection but is it pretty much hopeless to expect getting an interview. And also do they take people out of the interview waitlist on a rolling basis or do they wait till the end of the interview cycle (around April?? May??)? Thanks

They take people off of the interview wait-list sporadically throughout the entire cycle. It's also not totally hopeless, quite the opposite actually: look for the post by "Tallion" on page 21 to brighten your outlook on it. The more proactive you are, the better your chances become so keep the school updated with any new developments that you feel enhance your application. 👍

going to withdraw my acceptance here soon and, say goodbye to the $1000 deposit already put down, but hopefully that should open up a spot for someone.

Does anyone know if Midwestern will be sending those of us who paid our $1,000 deposit in december a 1098 for tax purposes? It was money paid in 2010 but goes toward 2011 tuition so I was just curious if anyone on here had any info. Thanks.

YESSSS!! Interview successfully moved up

1 April --> 28 February

Check the MWU portal underneath the "Financial Services" tab and see if it shows up in the options on the left.

Hey I have Friday Februrary 18th, anyone willing to trade for a better date? I have another interview that week and don't think I can miss an entire week of school.

wondering if anyone knows where i can find the match list for residency for AZCOM. i know a link was posted before, but it's no longer active. and i would love to see it one more time just to make sure.. before putting down the deposit.

also, as a student coming from the midwest... i am a little lost as far as choosing sites for rotation...i really don't know anything about arizona... if anyone has any advice about choosing west phoenix/east valley/tucson/LA.. i would totally owe you.. of course i am doing some research of my own... but anything is appreciated! thanks!

As far as rotation sites go, best advice anybody can give you is to either rotate where you'd prefer to live or want to eventually practice if you'd consider practicing in any of the areas.

From what I understand, the latest class to match is still 150 students. Is there any speculation as to how this will change with a class size of 250 all fighting for the rotations of their choice which may later help in determining where they do residency?

Even the smaller classes had to do a lottery system to match into sites; certainly while there were fewer students there are also now more rotation sites and spots for students. It seems like the general nature of rotations will be the same situation for the larger classes, just on a larger scale (though in all reality it should actually be better for the larger classes because the school has added more ward-rotations and sites with their own residency programs than the smaller classes had available to them). Most people get a foot in the door at programs they're really interested in during audition rotations in 4th year and end up applying to a number of programs they've never even visited/rotated at anyway (a big chunk of getting a residency spot is like getting into med school: numbers, LORs, and luck). On a larger scale, something that should be of more concern is the fact that med school admissions have gone up significantly over the past decade while the number of residencies has remained stagnant since the mid-1990s. Ultimately, if you play ball and play it well, the sky's the limit.

Didn't see you post this. I live in San Lagos and I love it; it is a bit expensive, though. However, I have the larger one bedroom units since they didn't have any smaller units available at the time, I also have a "lakeview" which is 50$ more. The smaller units are only slightly smaller, with plenty of room so if you want to live here and live by yourself definitely try and snag a smaller one.

The pool is one of their selling points and it really is that awesome. They have a trash service, which is mandatory and costs $25 (same thing as San Prado), where people will come by Sunday-Thursday and take the trash out of the designated bin they give you. If you're a girl and closet size matters to you, my walk-in closet could probably house a small family. It's only about a 10-15 minute walk to the auditorium (where your classes will be) depending on where you are located in the complex. A lot of my classmates live here and overall a lot of MWU students live in the complex, as well. That's all I can really think of. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

thank you randomusername for answering my previous question..

yet, i have some more..

are there any third and fourth years here who can comment on the quality of rotation sites? Since these sites are new? Are they pretty solid?

And it was mentioned in the presentation on the interview day that students at AZCOM get pretty good reviews during rotations right? can't remember..

thanks..

I am also interested in hearing about rotation sites and the quality of the rotations.

Also, I know that AZCOM has recently expanded their class size significantly. Can anyone tell me how long ago they made this increase, and what effect this has had on the quality of the education.

I know there can be "growing pains" when schools expand, so I am curious if AZCOM has had any of these types of problems.

That's what we've been told also and from a current-student's pov it makes sense as the prof in charge of our clinical course is awesome.

I believe the 2011 class was the last ~150 class, 2012 is ~200, and 2013 is the first ~250 class. So far, my class hasn't encountered any major hiccups because they were hammered out with the 2012 and 2013 classes. As far as the quality of the education goes, I'm wagering it hasn't declined but has actually improved as 2014 continuously outperforms previous classes on exam after exam.

So now that I have had time to sit down and start planning my more than possible move to Arizona 🙂 I have been entertaining the idea of buying a condo... Can anyone that lives in this area tell me where some good condos are. Or where some nice downtown sort of areas are near the school? I am going to be living here for the next four years, so I figured I may as well buy some property and put my loan money to good use! Then when I move I might rent it or sell it... Opinions are welcome!

if you're open to buy a little farther from campus (~5-7 minutes on the Loop 101) you can BUY a nice 2 bedroom condo in North Phoenix / Deer Valley for ~60K. EDIT- Mom just told me there are some 1 br for 37K! North Phoenix is very suburan-ish but you can get a good deal on a house there. I know a MWU OD student who got one for 70K. Houses in North Glendale / Arrowhead Ranch where the school is are a bit more expensive, but can be had for under 200K, condos for 110K. This is a great deal considering that in 2005 and 2006 these homes were selling for 500K+. In AZ there are PLENTY of shortsale and foreclosure homes that can be had very cheaply if you're willing to deal with the red tape.

"Downtown"-ish areas that are easily accessible to school via the Loop 101 within ~20 minutes you may want to consider include Scottsdale and Westgate. Keep in mind that although Phoenix has an actual downtown, it is not as lively as other urban centers, and is a half hour drive from MWU. Tempe is by far the liveliest urban-ish place but that is 45 minutes away and filled with crazy ASU students. Westgate is much newer and cheaper, and is the location of many restaurants, sporting venues, and shopping. It is often referred to as the "Times Square of the Desert". I dont know of many condos in that area, but homes in Westgate can be had even cheaper than in North Glendale / Arrowhead area. Scottsdale, is more expensive, but is a world reknown town for shopping, golfing, spas, culture, etc. The new spring training facility is also opening there soon. A decent condo here is upwards of ~100K, and homes 300-400K and higher.

Point is that if you play your cards right, in AZ monthly mortgage payments for some condos may actually be cheaper or the same price as monthly rent! I've lived in Arrowhead Ranch for 14 years, 2 miles from campus and know my Valley extremely well. My mother has also been a Realtor in the Valley for 8 years and can point you in the right direction and even provide more accurate figures/actual MLS listings if you are considering buying. If you are interested, PM me, and I can provide her contact info.

Thanks for the info! I guess my main problem has been searching places on the internet and knowing where they are in relation to the school. I want to live 10 min away tops... I may have to get a realtor that can help me distantly locate a place since I wont be able to fly out to look until a weekend in April sometime. Ill PM you!

Just got an interview date set for April 5th 😀.
Really excited. Could anyone tell me if the interview invites are automatic or if they are selective? I'm just curious if every IS applicant who finishes an application for AZCOM gets one.

As far as I know IS interview invites are just as selective as OOS and most definitely aren't automatic. Good luck on your interview and if you'd like to get an earlier date just keep checking the portal regularly (at least once a day) and something is bound to turn up.

That's actually some really good information. Ill have to keep checking. Thanks!
