AZCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
👍 Thanks for the updates. I appreciate it. I just stress quite often after the runaround I got when getting my assignment for rotations and the rejection -> waitlist -> rejection -> waitlist story I have from LECOM this year.

Dan, are you still trying to get in to LECOM off the waitlist? From my short browsing of this thread I thought you were as die-hard AZCOM as they came.

No definitely not. I was just referencing the craziness of the cycle. I got batted around back and forth like that at LECOM before I was accepted to AZCOM.

Hey everyone,

I've been a "lurker" for some time but figured I'd jump in here since housing assignments are up. I'm disappointed to have received an email stating that I did not get housing after all. My housing app was complete by mid-Feb. and I ranked almost all the options (although my first choices were 2 bedroom apartments with an assigned roommate). Anyone else in the same or a similar boat? I'd really appreciate if someone can offer advice on where to go from here. I was really depending on the student housing...

I'd email Jose and see if there are any other options available that you might not have previously ranked. If that doesn't pan out, I'd suggest visiting the link below to see the discussion that took place as this year's class tried to find housing for a decent starting point before you start to do too much Googling.

Thanks a ton for the tips DbDan and randomusername. I definitely would prefer on campus housing the most so I will call Jose tomorrow and pray/hope for the best. Otherwise, that facebook link will be helpful as a guide for sure

Hey everyone who was disappointed to not get housing like I was: I called today and it turns out that there are available units after all! I think the rejection email goes out to those who don't get their first or second choice picks. I was able to secure a standard 2 bedroom place for now, but that could change depending on people dropping out, etc. The standard may not be ideal but if you guys want, call the office!

does AZCOM give deferred acceptance for class of 2016? Have you known anyone on this forum who have got one?

Hey guys,

I just got an email from Jose that I can move in on 07/25, which is one week before orientation day. Not sure if I have to pay any extra fee. I'm sure you can move in couple days earlier than the contract.

Look forward to see all of you there

Question.. so for those of us who will be living off campus... is parking available at school? I assume there is a fee for parking at school...?

You'll just be charged a per diem rate for the extra week.

Surprisingly, this is one of the few aspects in which MWU doesn't charge and fee you into an oblivion. If more and more students keep coming from California and other regions where charging for parking is fairly normal, I wouldn't doubt to see it change though. 🙄

AWESOOOOMMEEEE!! so no parking application.. no parking fee..just come in through the gates and park wherever u want?! i do love this school..

So I have Kaiser Permanente which doesnt exist in AZ.

Clearly I will have to switch Insurance Providers.

Anyone have any advice/information that would save me some hassle on which Provider to choose? The MWU offered or something else?

I am pretty much only concerned with not having to pay a ton of $ for prescription drugs.

There is an "application" it's just so you can get a parking sticker so the guards at the gate know to just let you through. Also, you can't park on the first floor of the parking structure since it's for staff/faculty. Parking will be nice the first few weeks you guys start since MSIIs and some other programs are still on break or haven't started yet (which is why white coat is in Oct.) Once things pick up, parking can get annoying, though there's always parking in the structure.

Sorry to divert the topic. I got an interview invite and I am looking at the hotels available. I have seen that the Drury Inn and Country Inn seem to be highly recommended. I was wondering, are there any hotels which provide a shuttle from the airport to the hotels? Or would I just have to use Super Shuttle?

I stayed at a comfort suites that was close and had a shuttle to Midwestern. Right off the 101 as well.

That was the cheapest I found at the time, might want to check that out!

I don't think there is any free transportation from/to airport/hotel - I had to use the SuperShuttle during my interview. There is however free transportation from/to school/nearby-hotel.

Is the only difference b/w diff studios whether or not it includes dishwasher/dryer/washer?

To answer your question, I don't believe so. I interviewed at Touro-NV and they had an official policy, but there isn't one for AZCOM as far as I know.

I would definitely call to make sure, but as far as I know, there is no deferral policy.

I wondered this too -I know I could call but I wondered if AZCOM lets people defer for pregnancy or other issues.

They do defer for pregnancy, health reasons, etc. I thought the question was about being on the waitlist and showing up. Not sure why I read it like that

But, yes, they can work it out for you if you cannot finish the year. I'm not entirely sure how remediation works though. They do give you a 2nd chance, but not a 3rd chance from what I know. Failing a class the second time around = expulsion.

Hey, thanks -that is good to know! When I re-read it a second time I think you might have interpreted it right the first time!

I actually looked this up last night because there was a discussion in the main Osteo forum that alleged CCOM and AZCOM both did this, I guess they must have done that previously but according to the catalog, no more. If you fail one class, you retake it over the summer or the next year and if you fail it again, then you enter the extended study program. Essentially before you're dismissed in the pre-clinical years you have to fail a total of four courses across MS1-2 or three courses in one year.

thanks for the reply👍
actually you read right first time!! I meant like waitlist..because I've been waitlisted and was wondering if there are any deferred acceptances which have priority over me.

Wow, that must've been recent because my friend who is now 2014 didn't have that summer option. It's good to hear that AZCOM gives you a lot of chances.

Oh, ok  Yeah, there's no waitlist deferral thing as far as I know. They do accept people pretty close to the first day of classes, so keep in touch and they could call you as late as the end of July.

What's the class that everyone fails MS1? Gross anatomy?

It really depends on the person, as I've heard of people struggling in all of the basic sciences. The only courses I've not heard of anybody struggling in whatsoever so far are ICM and OMM, granted I've also heard that second year ICM gets fairly intense at times but I'm not sure how many people actually struggle with it.

Is anyone able to access the blueprints for the different on campus housing options. I remember looking at them when ranking the different options, but now I can't find them. I just want to get an idea of what I will have room to bring/the layout...I am a little neurotic about these kinds of things.

I was able to get a complete floor plan by emailing Jose my apartment type/room #.

Speaking of being neurotic, I assume all on campus housing apts have AC/Heater built in, right?

ICM has changed drastically this year and it has not been kind. We've had ridiculous and sporadic amounts of information dumped on us with little to no direction on what is going to be tested. Combined with the 6 hours of just ICM on Friday, ICM 2nd year is easily the worst class we have.

It's not difficult, but really, the shotgun mentality coupled with a new guest speaker each week makes it hard to adjust and find out what is relevant. 2012 didn't have this problem since 1 person taught the majority of the afternoon sessions, but now it is a completely different beast.

Studying for boards now just makes it all that much worse this quarter.

We've complained and critiqued a lot so hopefully it will change for 2014, but no guarantees. Just imagine your worst undergrad course: a ton of seemingly random topics and 'everything' is high yield. Yeah, it wasn't fun to see the entire page bolded.

I think failure is more of a concern for basic sciences. I believe that failing OMM and ICM have different consequences and committees to refer to. I can't seem them holding a student back because they failed OMM or ICM. I personally don't know anyone who has though, so I'm not entirely sure how it works.

That's always reassuring. haha I really hope 2013's criticisms payoff for us though, as that sounds horrible.

Also, from what I gathered in the catalog the school won't technically differentiate between a failure of a basic science vs. any other course, even electives; they all seem to count equally as failures (I think it said they'd even potentially count a withdrawal from a course as a failure).

I'm certain they'll do something. Right now, many of the lectures are actually compilations of lectures given to residents or med students in the past. For example, in our last midterm, we had one 3 hour bock comprise of SLE, Diabetic neuropathy, MS, and ALS as presented by one doc in practice now. It is sort of connected, but honestly they can do a way better job.

lol at ucla, u hav to go duel for ur parking spot. welcoming change.

Heh. You have to apply to duel for parking and even then you may get a 50% shot. Parking on campus was so ridiculous it amazes me that they haven't tried to find room to build a larger parking structure somewhere, or turn lot 11 into a structure instead of open air. I was lucky and got parking 2nd year by saying I had a job off campus in Irvine working for my roommates brother. Got audited and had to provide a "pay stub" but it was well worth it to not have to find parking constantly on gayley/landfair.

BTW, always good to see another UCLA grad heading to AZCOM 👍

yeah lol  you get parking ticket at ucla for the most random reason, even for parking in the right spot. but, ull develop insane, unparalleled parallel parking skill. anyhoo, cali/ucla represent!

 Our biggest entertainment when I used to hang out and day drink during the summer in our frat house was to watch all the people try to parallel park on Gayley. Such epic failure 90% of the time it was awesome

I'm going to buy a new computer before starting in the fall, and I'm considering a Mac, but I was wondering if any current students could shed light on that. Has anyone heard about problems with compatability with the school or any other concerns?
Thanks for the feedback.

Shouldn't be an issue. You ran run windows on Mac. Either standalone or through parallel windows.

How is AZCOM about granting 1 year deferrals to admitted students? Do they do this often?

as of a couple days ago:

"We do want to make sure you are aware that at this time our class is full and we are accepting pending an open seat. The past two years we did ultimately have a seat for all our pending accepts, but we cannot guarantee that will always be the case."

This was in my interview confirmation email. I have recently cancelled my interview for April 22 so hopefully someone else can take it.

Good luck.

Search "Deferred Admissions" in the catalog.

http://www.midwestern.edu/Documents/Catalog/AZCatalog2010-2011(1).pdf

Also, as noted by Flushot, there is NOT a wait-list deferred admissions policy for AZCOM such as exists at some other schools.

In the interview I had today, the Dean stated that they do NOT interview for the waitlist and they have spots open. Seems contradictory to the email that was sent ..hmm.

I didn't get that email either and my interview is tomorrow.

Hi all🙂 I am a current first year AZCOM student and member of the Student Government Association. As of last Friday morning, there were 219 matriculants in the AZCOM 2015 class. I interviewed on April 16 of last year, as did several of my current classmates. Rest assured, you are not interviewing for a waitlist spot. Best of luck with your Spring interviews!

I am a current master's student at MWU and will start at AZCOM this fall. I live off campus and there is plenty of parking at school. And it may surprise you but its free to get a parking permit..

Parking permit is included in the $50K/year tuition.
