AZCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey All,

I'm excited about next year. I'm going to turn down my seat at KCOM tonight and move full steam ahead with AZCOM. Can anyone think of a reason that I shouldn't?

Looking forward to a great year with you all!

Uh, location, tuition, and your own call. Considering people who post only go to 1 school or none at all, we can't make that ultimate decision. Hearsay isn't something I feel should sway people despite it being all premeds have so make it a personal decision.

+1 to hearsay not swaying decisions. Its too bad there isn't a better way for premeds to comprehensively evaluate different schools. I wish I could offer a better proposal.

That said, I'm pretty confident in my decision...I just get nervous before making such life-altering decisions...and who better to back me up than a friendly community of people I have never even met

Tuition is the big kicker between the two, but my family is in AZ, and I grew up in AZ, so its moving home for me...the weather is something I will definitely love. Aside from that...my wife wants AZ over the deserted Missouri plains...so that said...I guess it wasn't much of a decision after all

See you all soon!

Are you WL? Don't give up yet...I've heard plenty of stories of WL calls in July and even during orientation...

Prepare for the worst, get your primaries ready for next cycle if you haven't heard back from any other schools, but don't give up hope.

Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

It's very difficult to stay optimistic at this point. I know for a fact that AZCOM has taken a good number of waitlister in the past, but based on what admission says there won't be much movement this time around.

It is a life altering decision and I wish I could offer you more than just blind reassurance. I hope that all I have provided here was as objective as it could be, even if it could all be different by the time you're in my shoes. If there's any help I offer, let me know.

I still hope for an SDN meetup sometime in the near future after boards are done with for random and I. Perhaps when you all come early for your head start we can whip something together.

Sounds great Flushot. Let's get together for sure. Thanks again to you, random, and the others. I just sent the withdrawl email to KCOM, so I am 100% on board for AZCOM C/O 2016. Everyone's help has been invaluable in preparing for admission, and making the final decision. I'm looking forward to a great 4 years!

Does anyone know if AZCOM does tours for visitors? My wife and I will be visiting the Phoenix area in a couple of weeks and she wants to see the campus. Or if there are any current students that wouldn't mind showing us around that'd be cool too.

What have you heard from admissions to make you believe this?

Admission staff have mentioned it. I'm just not expecting a significant movement. If you're accepted anywhere else FANTASTIC! If not it's time to reapply.
ps. You can contact admissions yourself, I'm just being realistic about the waitlist situation.

I don't really think they do actual tours aside from interview days, but you can always call ahead and see. At the very least, I'm sure they'd let you stroll around campus (granted, you wouldn't have access to any of the buildings).

Yeah, I figured as much. At the very least we will walk around for a few minutes. I'll call ahead though and see what they can do. Thanks for the advice.

They may give you temporary access if you talk to security. I've seen this happen before so as long as you ask, it is possible still. As far as someone guiding you around, I don't know about that but you can ask.

Is there anyone out there that's been pulled off the WL yet? Or does anyone know when AZCOM starts WL movement? 🙁

I just withdrew my acceptance. Good luck to all of you still waiting to hear back!

Dr Meows, I think we're among the most dedicated current azcom waitlisters... I hope we both get in :xf: very soon

Thank you and I agree- good luck to you! I'm really trying to stay positive!

I am sitting here seriously biting my nails your FYI has just released some stress with the words "it is starting to move"...lolz SUCH A BASKET CASE!!!! But GOOD LUCK to all of us in alternate purgatory!!!

That's good news. It's nice to see enthusiasm and I hope the best for you all on the list.

Just FYI, admissions told me that there are 140 people (as of 11:45 AM central this morning) currently on the alternate list and that it has started to move. She did not tell me how many they expect to take however. According to previous posts this means about 7 people have been taken off so far. 😱

Thanks for the info! Good to know it's starting to move - now hopefully about 140 currently accepted people give up their spots 🙄 😉

Haha if that actually happens it would be so awesome.

Just called admission, new update, 250 students in the class currently, and 134 on the wait list. This means that I wasn't even close on the alternate list if they have all ready taken 16 people off the waitlist. Just wanted to let you guys know the new update...

How many more can we realistically expect to turn down their seats at this point?

Honestly, at this point I just spent another 700 dollars reapplying, if I were taken off the wait list I don't know if I would accept or not. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I'm at the verge of submitting primaries. My problem isn't payin $$ for apps or the prospects of getting in this time around. I have to fix my MCAT and It's dreadful reaching for mcat books all over again.

Try being in my spot, I have a 35 MCAT and they told me the only reason I didn't get in was my interview...

I have a 34, I'm not sure how my interview went, are you an alternate at least? How did you find out that your interview didn't go well?

Have you used exam krackers, they are awesome, it was the only study material I used other than aamc practice tests and im a nontrad student who took all my basic science classes years ago and I made a 34 14b, 12 p, 8 v (ran out of time on verbal but scared to take it again and lower my other scores)

I know that it's all about a "well-rounded application" but the fact that you 2 haven't been accepted yet is completely bogus. 😱

It is bizarre that you did not get in with that kinda mcat score 34, 35, etc.. SMH

Can anyone tell me how the rotation match list works? I haven't received, or seen, anything that requests my top location choices.

Can a current student comment on how many books we actually use during first year? I plan to commute 3 miles to school on my road bike.

You should have received it in your matriculation packet. If you didn't (or haven't received it yet) email Terry (he's posted his info several times on the Facebook page so it shouldn't be hard to find).

I used one book each term (anatomy atlas the first two, neuro atlas in the spring) as well as the OMM manual and that's pretty typical of many (if not most) MS1s. You may find additional books useful, but you aren't going to need to lug around a ton of books unless you just really love having books filled with untested material on-hand.

Where are you living? I plan on biking into school most days, and still haven't found the perfect apartment complex. It Is also difficult finding a place when you live 2000 miles away.

Thank you guys for answering my question, sounds perfect for commuting. To answer jrgreen, my wife and I found a little house in Peoria not too far away. It's about the same price as San Lagos but double the space.

I know the feeling man. I'm going to be living at Sun Creek. I'm coming from the Chicago area and I'm going blindly. It isn't too bad looking. We'll see.

I'm going to be cycling most days myself. I need to pick up a new road bike soon.

Think about buying an older steel frame and converting it to a fixed gear, or just give it some TLC. They make great city bikes and can take the abuse of the daily commute (also inexpensive). If you do so, i've made a hobby of building/rebuilding bikes and would be happy to help you out.

Can a current student or local give me some info on Sierra Canyon apartments. Im looking, sight unseen, and getting a lot of mixed reviews online. What is the neighborhood and reputation like?
