Background checks

Sorry, this is off topic. Does anyone know if any of the medical school stuff (mcat, application) shows up in background checks? Also, can a company conduct a background check without your written or spoken consent?

I have never heard of anything like that. I am guessing that you are wondering because you are in a situation where you are interviewing at jobs at the same time you are applying for med school, with the idea that you might need to get a job if you do not get into school, or you need a job until school starts, at which point you will semi-guiltily quit the job, leaving the company twisting in the wind, and you want to know if they know that you are going to do this without you telling them that you are going to do it.

They need permission to do a background check, signed permission.

It seems like they could check anything that's "public record" without permission, but they would need to know where to go and look. For example, I believe the names of MCAT takers is public record.

Actually about 80% off ALL employers run background checks before extending an offer. The fine print is usually on an "application" that you fill out, even at jobs where you are a professional and a resume supercedes the application. The professional employment world has become increasingly stringent about these kinds of checks. For example, 6 years ago when my wife applied for a job at the Kennedy School of Gov't no check was run, now we have friends who are checked for low-level gigs at Harvard.

Some companies will even run credit checks on you as if your credit score is any indication of your value as a contributing employee. As a technology and broasdcast professional for 12 years, I speak from experience.
