Background Info: Disciplinary Action

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know for UF you don't have to put "yes" if it expunged from the record. Not sure for other schools. You can call them and see. I had academic probation for one semester, but I put "no" to the disciplinary action because it was expunged from the record. Then I explained about the probation in the "additional information/comments" section from the secondary application. Not sure how much it'd hurt you, but it is better to explain what you have learned from this experience and that it won't happen again. That is, if you decided to put "yes" to the disciplinary action.

Nothing like starting a quest in a profession by concealing unprofessional conduct.

I think you need to admit what you did, and say what you learned from your mistake. Don't try to hide it. Don't give an excuse saying that what you did wasn't a big deal. Just say that you did something immature, you learned ______ from your mistake, and since that incident you have become a more responsible person.

I don't think it will hurt your application if you're honest about it. On the other hand, if you lie about it and adcoms find out, they will reject you.

no need to risk admission on something that doesn't really matter to adcoms. if a disciplinary sanction isn't on your record, and you mention it in your app, that will speak high things about your character. the adcoms know that if you put it down, then you are honest and you probably knew it wasn't on your record/transcript, but you had enough integrity to put it anyway. i had a alcohol conduct violation sophomore year. i was not suspended, i just had to write this essay and make this poster for freshman halls about underage drinking. i wrote it down, described it, and told what i learned from it on my aadsas. citing this "wrong doing" clearly has not hurt me. i have interviews at every school i applied to except harvard. 7 out of 8 interviews isn't too shabby for someone who got university sanction for underage drinking. plus i felt like, all adcoms know most college students underage drink in college. so not being honest is not being real with them or yourself. ESPECIALLY if it does not show up on your record. be smart, and ethical.....just like you would want your dentist to be with you.

We all do some sort of unprofessional conduct. Some worse than others. It just depends on whether or not you're caught.

Some might take exception to your affirmation that "we all do some sort of unprofessional conduct" unless, of course, you happen to be an investigator for a state board of dental examiners and happen to be privy to such statistical info, although it is not exactly relevant. Being guilty of "unprofessional conduct" is one thing; lying about it by omission or commission is a totally different variety of chicken. Ds may be inclined to forgive a temporary lapse of insanity but they are less likely to be as kind at an outright attempt at deception.
