I'm taking Bio 1 and Phys 1 next semester. I am really passionate about going to medical school and eventually going into psychiatry, but so far my freshman year science grades aren't going to cut it. What are my options? I'm looking into retaking them at a community college over the summer or would it be better to retake them at my university. Would I have to retake Bio as well or should I wait until I finish Bio 1 to see how my grade is?

I would definitely advise you to retake both of the General chems. Also, you need to do some detective work. Are your poor grades a result of extraneous variables that took away from your studying (alcohol, drugs, a girlfriend, something else?) or did you really put in a solid effort and just didn't understand the concepts? If you know you didn't put in enough time to studying, figure out the distracting piece and get rid of it. If there is one thing I learned quickly is that if you aren't 100% dedicated to the grade aspect of college, you are going to run into troubles. Medicine has to be the thing you want more than anything else, and you need to re-adjust so that your grades reflect that. Do not retake at a community college....retake at your current university and look into tutoring if you need it.

good luck! you can do this.

P.S. how have you taken Bio 2 already but are taking bio 1 in the future?

I'm certainly interested in seeing replies. I'm entering my second year, due to poor finances I'm at a CC until next spring AND my overall GPA was only a 2.8 (ouch... good luck to me, I know). My sister tried to commit suicide and was in and out of the hospital this past year so I had a lot going on but Med School's aren't going to care (obviously). I'm hoping beyond hope that if I work my ass off I'll still have some chance at getting into Med School...😱

I do think that you will get SOME sympathy but you will definitely need to get good grades from now on to show that your sister's unfortunate even played a part in your poor performance.

dear god. This is will hard to redeem for a US MD school...

Worst case scenario, you retake these courses and use grade replacement for DO schools. They can easily go into psychiatry also -- so it wont hinder you.

If you go back and absolutely kill your classes, med schools most certainly WILL care about what happened your first year. I know from personal experience that two years of 4.0 GPAs will bring a 2.8 GPA up to a 3.6 GPA. Do that and you won't have any problems with a bad first year.

I'm really pretty much in a similar situation right now. C's-C+ in Gen Chem 1/2, and Bio 2. I really don't know what the problem is..I'm thinking I need more consistant studying rather then just piling everything up a a few days before the test. This is honestly not how I pictured my first semester going, because I am serious about this. I thought there would be a little bit of leeway for mistakes in freshman year, as long as I show a strong upward trend from now on, but now I'm getting a little nervous/worried about it, any advice /tips?

I am taking Bio 1 this summer, and im really shooting for an A to get myself on the right track.

You already know what the problem/solution is.

just keep telling yourself "it could always be worse" and move on. That's how I dealt with my crappy 3.4 freshman gpa.

I had 3 C+'s and salvaged to a 3.6 (took lots and lots of A's and 4 years of grades) and got in. Just perform at a very high level from here on out and everything will be ok.

Disclaimer: I love in a very pre-med friendly state with lots of schools.

Retake the gen chem's at either your university or an equivalent one. Don't retake them at a CC.
