Bad idea to drink before an interview?

so i got my first interview coming up in a while...is it a bad idea to take down a couple of shots before the interview to relax my nerves?

or any other recommendations on how to deal with nervousness?
 
You want the doc to smell booze in your breath in your interview? As a doc you will not be drinking between the hours of 12 AM to 7 PM. Do not give them any clue that you drink between those hours.

Honestly kind of concerning since you posted about having institutional action because a drinking, hope the best for you though, personally I would not do it, worst case they smell it and you are done for sure at that school and possibly more. I'd practice Interviews sober

So, it's not ironic...

In any case, all you can really do is change the way you're thinking about the day. Think of the interview as more of a conversation than a stressful question and answer session. In my experience, the interviewer is usually interested in getting to know you as a person and is not out to get you or pin you down with tough questions.
 
How about this? Go to your nearest nutritional supplement store and buy an energy drink or ask for something to calm your anxiety. I would also recommend taking some Gaba (gamma aminobutyric acid) before you got to bed the day before your interview. Wake up feeling a million bucks. 😀
 
If you truly have anxiety issues, go to your GP and get a script for Xanax or Ativan. Do NOT drink alcohol
 
save the drinking til after the interview.
 
Dude, you have an IA for drinking and you're considering drinking as a stress coping mechanism? If you're not an alcoholic already, you're heading down a very dangerous road.

only good advice...

the only reason i thought of drinking before an interview is because i saw a thread about it before or it would have never crossed my mind..now thats out of the question honestly..

any other advice though?
 
damn guys chill...this forum seriously has some crazy people..i wasn't ever actually set on drinking before the interview..i just thought it would make a good thread topic which apparently is has...

PS: anyone got any interview experience/tips
 
I'd go with an everclear saturated tampon suppository. Its discrete, titillating, and does wonders for your sphincter tone.

Keep your sunglasses on and wait until you get into the interview room and follow this protocol:

Have a seat, put your feet up on the interviewers desk, place one ankle over the other, and pull out a hip flask. Open it slowly as you lower your sunglasses and lock eyes with the person sizing you up. Take a log pull, smack your palm on his desk and say: "Ahh, Maker's Mark, help yourself," holding it out for the cat who'll either say: "No thanks," accept it, or toss you out. If you get booted, push your shades up your nose, shrug, and leave gracefully.

Because you told us you imbibe, or could use a nip or two; you will be judged. Why not do what you do with style. Also, dress well. Very well.

You're gonna start sweating alcohol and they'll smell it.
 
Tbh I've done this before a job interview and it helped. I don't want to recommend it (even though it worked for me) but here's some tips if you're gonna do it:

1. Shots only. You'll already have to use the bathroom more often but beer/mixed drinks will make it worse.

2. Brush your teeth after drinking. No, gum/mints won't cover it up properly.

3. Be aware that you'll need to use the restroom more often.

4. Don't drink with your interview clothes on unless you know for a fact that you can drink without spilling a drop.

5. There's a fine line between drinking to take the edge off and drinking to the point where you start stuttering more, zoning out, being more impulsive, and even slightly incoherent answers.

But seriously Xanax is more preferable. I might consider that.

Plenty of better stuff out there. Buffalo trace, bulleit, and Elijah Craig for quality and inexpensive (value!) bourbon. I like bernheim for a change, that's a kentucky whiskey that's made from wheat- I don't think it qualifies as bourbon. If you like rye, bulleit has a good one (look for the green label, instead of their usual orange), but Jefferson's and Whistle Pig are good if you can afford them. I don't usually go for scotch, but when I do I like dalwhinnie.

No need for sarcasm- just hate to see people pissing away more money than they should for nothing but mediocre whiskey in a square bottle with a bit of red wax on top.
 
Seriously though if you want advice: get a good nights sleep, eat a nice healthy snack, listen to some music that helps you relax and/or get pumped up while getting dressed to go to the interview, and then just try to have some nice conversations with people and don't be fake. and DON'T DRINK OR DO DRUGS.

Really? Is this serious?

Also, don't do high caffeine before interviews. Personal experience here; you'll say things you won't believe you said later.

Yeah, that's a side effect of caffeine that most people don't seem to be aware of. It removes some inhibition when you talk, which is why cops like to offer coffee to suspects before they're interrogated. I like to avoid coffee on interview days for that reason.

In the SAME day or worse 30/60 mins before? No, not even close. But, I'm sure you're a smart guy and this is NOT what you were implying.

Maybe in the night before, have one shot to chill out.

How else to calm nerves? Get a good night sleep, spend the night before doing something fun/enjoyable, remember that the interview is about getting to know you as a person as opposed to a grill session.

Anyway, on topic this is really an awful idea. What's your plan, smuggle a flask into your interview and take an abrupt trip to the bathroom? It would hurt you and you really don't need to do this.

Yup. All in moderation. Those little bottles they sell at nutritional stores, I know they are tiny, but peopple if you are not use to it just take half. lol

Not exactly. If used in this way it's in conjunction with counseling/therapy. It's used to disassociate the physiological response to anxiety so when faced with anxiety inducing situations things like elevated pulse, etc. won't exacerbate cognitive aspects of anxiety. It's not an anxiolytic.

Yes exactly.

Trust me, I know how and why it's used. The very reason you WANT to use it in these situations (and not benzos) is because it is NOT an anxiolytic. You probably don't want to roll into your med school interview on Xanax.

It wasn't a particularly funny post of mine, so the "lol" seemed a bit out of place at first glance.

And the "wtf" seems to indicate you didn't understand something. Hence my reply.

I thought it was a joke because i thought u weren't suppose to give actual medical advice on here especially since you know nothing about the op's actual health. My bad i guess... not going to argue with a resident so this little thing we are doing here.. it stops now, carry on.
