Hey everyone-

I think I come up with a new plan just about every day on how I am going to get all the pre-reqs finished. I know a lot of you have taken pre-reqs at a community college, which is what I am doing, however, has anyone taken classes at their local technical colleges (I hope everyone knows what I mean regarding the difference between them)? I am trying to fanaggle a plan to find as many pre-reqs that I can take at night or late afternoon so that I don't have to miss so much work. I know that technically, no one can say that taking classes at a technical school is frowned upon if the classes meet the requirements, but I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with this. I definitely don't think taking classes at a technical school should be frowned on, however, I know how some things go and just wonder if schools do frown on technical schools and they just aren't up front about it.

Any insight you guys have would be great! 😀

Wisconsin might not have a problem with MATC (or similar), but I bet a lot of OOS schools might. NOT to denigrate any one else's education, obviously, but I did read in another post that some school said that they didn't like that someone had taken their pre-reqs at a community college even! If anything, and this was your ONLY way to do it, I would reccommend INTRO classes at the tech school (like gen chem, intro bio/zooloy, whatever) and take upper level bio classes at a university so you show you can handle that too.

If you are in the area, would you be able to take classes at Lawrence? Unfortunately, it seems like all classes are given in the AM, doesn't it?

Thanks, Wi Girl. I might be taking bio-chem at Lawrence for the sweet price of $4,000....just for that class. 😱 It's the only accepted bio-chem around here offered concurrently with org chem II AND in the spring. Everywhere else (Oshkosh, GB, etc) it's only offered in the fall, only after org chem II. 🙁

The class I was thinking about taking was that physics class that I was referring to yesterday that is only a lecture. I haven't decided for sure what to do, so I'm just looking around at different paths.

ok, ot, but I was having a hard time picturing where in WI New London is exactly and when I looked it up, Mapquest but it in the middle of the ocean just west of Africa! I'm pretty sure that's incorrect

Washington State Univ. has an online biochem class.

I would be willing to bet it's much cheaper than $4000!!

They accept it for their Vet Med school, so I'm thinking it's likely to be accepted at other Vet Med schools.

It's online, so you don't have to miss any work. Similar format to OkState's Animal Nutrition - e-mail assignments and then testing with a proctor.

Sometimes the schools require that you take prereqs at an accredited college (and the technical schools are not necessarily accredited). So, I would be sure and check with the schools you want to apply to.

Just as an FYI....Madison currently doesn't accept any online classes....for any pre-req. 🙁 Thanks for the info, though!

Oh, and New London is about 25 miles west of Appleton in Wisconsin. So, I'm not in Africa!! 😀

You should call and talk to someone in the admissions department from each of the schools you want to apply to. They are usually really good about it.

I had to take biochem and i called each school to ask if i could take it at a community college. Most told me yes or no, but some even told me yes but they preferred it at a 4-year institution. So i think they would be just as accommodating and helpful with your question, and more upfront than you think.

Haha... yeah, knew it was in WI (I'm also from WI), just couldn't picture where it was relative to Oshkosh, Green Bay, etc. Just thought it was funny that Mapquest put it in the ocean! Although, maybe it would be more spring like down there? Another winter storm Thursday, what's up with that!?

I'm taking a prereq at UC Berkeley online (human physiology) and they offer otehr bio classes (cell bio, immunology, etc.) I was accepted at 3 schools and waitlisted at 2 and they all accepted those online classes. Around $700 per class + book.

Hello....I didn't even look at your name to realize that you would know something about the areas in WI. 🙂 Silly me. There is always a winter storm here it seems. This season will never end. 🙁

You try begging? Literally. Almost every college has some magic piece of paper that if the professor signs makes all those silly "prerequisites" just go away.

The college I am finishing up my pre-reqs at does BioI in the fall and Bio II spring. I had credit for AP bio that my college doesnt really recognize but the professor is cool and with power invested in the magic paper, I am taking Bio II this semester and will be taking their Bio I the first semester of summer session.

Magic paper also got me genetics.

Most professors are pretty cool if you just approach them and show them that you are fully aware of the situation and the potential pitfalls of the missing pre-reqs or taking the classes concurrently.

Sorry if I confused anyone by this comment. I meant to say that Madison doesn't accept any online bio-chem classes. at this point That's the class I had specifically asked about. I'm not sure about any of the other pre-req classes, though. 🙂

david594.....or anyone else for that matter....how hard would Bio-Chem be without any org chem experience? IF someone would let me take it concurrently, it would be with Org Chem I, not Org Chem II. I'm not really what anyone would call a "science whiz," so I wouldn't want to completely drown in the class. I'm not sure how important Org Chem is in regards to Bio-Chem. Hmmm?

I don't know about the other schools, but Illinois requires that the biochem course has to have an organic chemistry prerequisite. You might want to check with your school to find out if that applies. If so, no concurrent enrollment in both classes for you.

I read the problem as you being unable to find a school that would let you take biochem concurrently with orgo II. The private school being the only one for $4000. My point was more to check with your public schools and see if you could find a professor who would sign you in to take them concurrently. Nothing to do with the feasability of taking the material concurrently.

Orgo 1 and 2 are commonly offered as a summer series. Have you looked into that as an option? It would make the rest of the next year a lot easier for you if you could do it this summer.

I took Biochem before I took Orgo I and II I believe. As long as you are familiar with the organic functional groups (hydroxy, carbonyl etc.) I would think it wouldn't be a problem at all. I found Biochem to more memorization than anything else and only had the one General Chem class before I took it.

Oh, I see what you meant. My main problem was just finding a Biochem to take in the spring semester. The public schools are the ones that only offer Biochem in the fall. If I wait to take Biochem in the fall at a public school, that will push my application back one year. If I can take it somewhere in the spring, then I can apply for the fall of 2010. So complicated 🙁

I tried very hard to forget everything I learned in orgo I and II, and took biochem the semester after. While being familiar with the groups is helpful, most books (if not necessarily lecture) will cover background material that is necessary. I would argue that if you can get the above mentioned "magic paper" you could def. do both concurrently (it just won't be easy time/brain wise!!).

Back to the question about physics -- if you are going to do lecture only, I would recommend NOT taking it at the tech school. Without the lab, you are already a little short of the normal phys req (not anything wrong with that, if wi is okay with lec only -- I would have preferred that personally) so I would not go on to take the lecture at a tech school. This might leave a hole in your pre-reqs in the physics area. I hope that was clear ...

Personally, I don't know why we need to take physics anyway -- how is knowledge of circuits going to help me with vet med? But its a requirement so ....

Tangentially: snow on thursday?? boo!! I'm flying home that day -- hopefully it won't be bad!

Physics scares the crap out of me, but oh well....it's still required. 🙁 I wish I had a crystal ball so that I could figure out which parts of my obsessing will actually pay off in the end.

I would pay good money for this. Right now, I'm woried over the fact that I might regret not going into history, or getting my masters in history first; then I go on SDN, and I remember why I chose vet med (yes I like animals, but the community of my future colleagues is AMAZING! 🙂)

As of now, there's a winter storm watch for the southern half of WI and they are calling for 4-8 inches of heavy snow/slush. We shall see... seems hard to believe it's going to snow when it was so beautiful out today and it's supposed to be near 50 again tomorrow!
