Direct from the Air Force's website, with similar wording for other branches : "While on scholarship you will spend 45 days on active duty in the Air Force, and once you graduate you will serve active duty (one year for each year of scholarship, with a minimum of three years)."

Does this mean that they can pull you from medical school to serve your active duty somewhere? If so, has this occasion ever arisen that you know of?

Also, once my service is over, is there any circumstance that can lead to me being forced back into the military? I would like to serve my country, but not be forced to spend my entire life serving my country.

Thank you in advance.

Read a bit more. All of these questions have been answered before.

No, they will not interfere with med school. You can be on active duty and attending school at the same time. It is something called school orders.

Yes, they can call you back if you remain in the IRR. There is a minimum of 8 years of total service. Some may be on active duty (or all) and some may be in the Individual Ready Reserve. If you do not resign your commission after the 8, you can still be called back. Does not happen as a rule, but you never know.

Just emphasizing for the OP: the only time they'd call you back from IRR is if World War III broke out or something.(I've never heard of it happening and the older you get the less likely it is that they will call you back) It can happen but it's pretty unlikely. (ie draft would be reinstated, government moves focus entirely to war, etc)
