Hey guys,

i was doing some calculation of my gpa before applying this cycle...and I was wondering if adcoms were lenient on a C here or there on the application. I got C's in both organic chemistrys, and B's in both gen chemistrys (I guess it goes to show I'm not very good at chemistry), but I got A's in everything else relating to Biology, Math and Physics and most geneds (English, philosophy etc.). Right now, my sci. gpa's only about a 3.38, my cumulative gpa about a 3.45 (messed up pretty badly freshman year in addition to the C's in organic chemistry sophomore year), but I've been working hard since then and I'm expecting it to raise to a 3.45/3.55 after this semester.

Are adcoms forgiving of an apparant weakness in a subject, in my case, chemistry? Or are they going to punish me for not being wellrounded?
Are they observant of upward trends in GPAs?
should I wait until next year to apply and boost my GPAs even higher?

sorry, i know i'm not in that bad of a position, and a 3.4 is plenty to work with. just getting a little freaked out before the whole application process.

If you have 30+ MCAT you can still get in. C's in not one but both Orgo classes will cause some room for doubt and will probably be brought up at an interview.

Yes, they will pay attention to upward trends and yes, cccasional C's are ok. I had a few C's (stupid organic chemistry 😡 ) and my gpa was similar to yours. I still had multiple acceptances, so you should be ok as long as the rest of your application is decent 🙂

I have like the same situation as you; applying here with a 3.45 sci/3.56 cum with 3 C's & a D my frosh yr but a 3.85 or so my soph and junior year. People on here will tell you a variety of things, no one really knows anything for sure though so take it all with a grain of salt. All you can really do is apply. But yes I think you def have a good shot at allo schools, probably most likely your state schools...Yes they like upward trends and no I definately would not wait another year unless you aspire to go to a top-10/20 school. Of course you didn't say your MCAT...if it's 30+ then that gives you a lot better of a chance obviously but you know that...Good luck! 🙂

Tinkerbelle, if you don't mind me asking..where did you get accepted to? My scores aren't that impressive so I'd like to take a shot at those schools myself!

Maryland, Penn State, NYMC, Drexel, USUHS

You could also consider these schools since these are places that granted me interviews: Duke, Gtown, Temple, EVMS, Tulane, Rochester

I have a C+ and a C respectively in the two semesters of Orgo lecture (3cr each), but got an A and an A- respectively in the two semesters of Orgo lab (2cr each). Unfortunately at my undergrad university, the lectures and labs are not averaged, since if they were, I wouldn't even be posting right now. Has anyone ever had the suggestion made to retake Orgo either while still in school or post-graduation or is this too much effort that can be used to improve one's app in other ways? Opinions??

i just took the mcat this month. it didn't make me feel too good about myself. i guess all i can do is just wait till the scores come out and see what i should do from there.
