Does anyone know if classes like computer science or psychology are included in BCPM gpa? thank you in advance.

Comp sci and psychology are not included in the BCPM. Comp sci is Computer Science/Technology (COMP) and psychology is Behavioral and Social Sciences (BESS).

See the AMCAS instruction manual for more info. The course classification info starts on page 76.

just a quick question. i looked over the instruction booklet about the GPA and what courses count towards the BCPM. i wanted to know if you include the introductory courses in biology and chemistry (ex. BIOL 100 Principles of Biology or CHEM 100 - Introduction to Chemistry). im inclined to say no, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. anybody know whether intro classes count or not? thanks.

They definitely count toward the BCPM. Any courses offered by the Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math departments at your school will count toward BCPM introductory or not. I think Statistics can also be applied toward the BCPM GPA

sorry to be a bother. just trying to calculate my bcpm. i took 2 precal courses at 4 credits each at a community college. when it transfered to the university, it turns into a 6 credit class. does amcas want the 2 separate courses, or the transferred equivalent at the university? thanks for all your help.

Yeah stats counts too. If it was a stats class in the psychology department, would it be bad to not classify it as such? Think I'll get in trouble?

Don't worry about being a bother man. Just post. As long as its not inflammatory, you'll just be labeled as a noob and most will move on.

well you have to send separate transcripts from every institution you've enrolled at to amcas. so you'll enter it as a 4unit class from whatever community college you were at. unless it was at a quarter-system college (in which case when calculating your gpa you'd convert it), it should still count as 4 units, i think

There are some cases where computer science courses count towards your BCPM gpa, but the courses have to be math intensive. There are comp sci courses at my school that the health professions office advises students to take if they'd like to avoid giving up AP credits by taking lower level math courses. AMCAS knows about these courses and counts them towards the BCPM gpa. So the moral might be to check with your pre-med committee, if your school has one.

What about like a class or research that deals with chemistry or biology, but is like a course offered by computer science. In my case, I am doing chemical informatics research (using computers to predict chemical structures, etc.), so what would this count under?

What's the name of the course? If it sounds bio/chem-ish, then it'll possibly count. But it'll still be safest to check with your committee.

And if the research is based on optimization/free energy techniques, you have a strong case for its inclusion in your BCPM GPA. You might list it as such and have to request an academic change at worst (I admit I didn't have to do this, so I don't know exactly how that all works).

g'luck! I need to get to bed.

My research under Comp Sci is called Chemical Informatics 😛 but yeah, I'll ask around. It basically deals with prediction of 3-d structures of small molecules from a given compound.

So would a psychology stats class count as a BCPM?

I think it does, but if anyone has verified their psychology stats class as psych and not BCPM, please let me know...because it's ruining my BCPM.

Hmm, I guess I have to ask would psychology physiology count as well then? It's basically all neuroscience.

What about a class in the history/philosophy of science? Does that count towards BCPM? Im inclined to say no since the class isn't really a science class and is more of learning what famous scientists discovered over the years.

nope -- all history of, politics of, etc classes don't count.

unless it's listed under the heading of bios, chem, phys, math, stat (and others), i don't think it'd be considered a BCPM course.
