I was a math major in undergrad - when computing my BCPM grade, does it include ALL of my math classes or just calculus? For that matter, does the BCPM count for the pre-reqs themselves or all of the classes that are BCPM (non-required pre-reqs)?

Crap, but thanks for the reply.

I feel your pain. There's a couple that I'd like to omit as well.

I am a Math / Statistics major. It's my whole transcript I want to omit. 🙁

Sometimes I wish I could do undergrad over again so that I could make sure to avoid certain unnecessary classes. Like I never needed Calculus. Most med schools ask for a year of college mathematics. I got that in high school (dual enrollment). My transcript would look a bit better without my stint in math classes.

Math here too. We were allowed to take grad classes (leads to a cool transcript & bad grades), but were graded as undergrads. So a A for a grad was usually a B/C for us.

I wish I could call AMCAS and say, "I realize that a B- in Advanced Computational Regression Analysis counts as a B-, but I was taking twice as many classes and graded twice as hard as my classmates."

They got me an incredible job after college, but destroyed my GPA. Plus, I did 174 hours of classes in 4 years (while working) - so I hope they look @ my seperated GPAs. 🙁

Oh - and I would gladly take just my econ degree GPA. 😀

Hey so do the "Introductory Algebra" classes I took at community college on my way to actual real college level math count as well? And how about the most remedial science classes? Like the introl level classes to the prereqs?

Yes, yes and yes.

what about physocology classes?

I took cognitive scienceI and II
do they count in the BCPM as science classes?

I don't believe that they do. The only way you can make those count is if the course number was like BIO 305 or some crap cuz it was cross-listed (my school does things like this, for example Anatomy is both BIO 308 and KIN (Kinesiology) 304).

Ignore this... I posted the same thing twice like a dumbo.

As the previous poster said, not unless the course heading is somehow bio-related. For example, I took two semesters of independent research in neuroscience which counted towards my psychology minor at my university, but because it was listed as a neuroscience course instead of a psychology course (NE400, not PY400), I was able to include it in my BCPM.... 32 Qual Points towards my BCPM! If it's listed as a psych course on your transcript, then unfortunately it will fall under the heading of social/behavioral science and will not be counted in the BCPM.

okay...i also did research in oral biology and recieved Honors Research credits... do you think that should count towards by bcpm?
or my honors thesis which is also all obout oral biology

thanks

I don't see why it shouldn't count. If both your research and thesis were on oral biology, I'm not sure what else it could possibly be classified as. Here is a quote directly from the AAMC concerning course classification on the AMCAS app:

"Course classification designation should primarily be determined by course content rather than course title or department. The applicant is instructed to consult his/her pre-professional health advisor or registrar to resolve any questions concerning this classification."

:luck:

If somebody has retaken a course, does a better grade count or are both the good and bad grade taken together in the BCPM?

That depends on whether you are applying to allopathic or osteopathic programs. For allopathic schools the two grades are averaged. For osteopathic schools, if you re-take a course only the most recent grade is factored into your GPA, NOT the best grade out of multiple attempts.

So for example if you take bio 101 and get a B- the first time and a C+ the second time, allopathic schools will average the two, whereas osteopathic schools will only count the most recent attempt, which in this case is the C+, despite the fact you did better the first time.

One other thing to note is that osteopathic schools do not take math classes into your science GPA, therefore it is only BCP.

Does engineering count in BCPM?

No. Not unless your talking about calculus or other math related courses.

OMFG! I am so glad I checked this thread again! Osteos don't count math classes! This is the best news I've heard in months. I only took 1 chem course in college with an A - I'm a clean freaking slate!!!!! I really don't want to go osteo, but jeez my odds of getting in just skyrocketed! Thank you SO much for this info - I've got to get to reading now!

They do not count towards your science GPA, they DO count towards your overall GPA.

Yeah - but still a huge deal. Starting out with a 3.5 science (for DO) and not going any lower at HES will give me a pretty good chance at an osteo though, no longer a long shot everywhere.
