I know this has been discussed at length, but I did a search and couldn't really find anything specific to answer my question.... so:

I go to a top-ten school, and our 1st two years are graded H/P/F. My grades are "eh" - not marginal (definetely passing) but below average. Do you think that the fact that i'm at a very competitive school be considered when looking at my class rank? I don't think that our school ranks us in the truest sense of the word, but i'm pretty confident that i'll end up in the bottom third. Do you think that this will matter for residency? I know it's early to worry, but it's starting to freak me out.

Thanks!

your grades 1-2 years don't mean much. your rank will mean more.

much to my annoyance, I found out today that your school does make a difference at certain programs. I don't know how prevalent it is, but apparently, I wasted my money applying to some programs just 'cause I didn't go to some brand-name med school. 😡 I want a refund.

Don't fret about it. EM is competitive but not uber-competitive. Just don't screw the pooch on the boards, get some decent grades during rotations, get some strong LORs and you'll do fine. I think by far the most important factors are LOR, LOR, LOR, LORs. If your four LORs are from psychiatrist and pediatricians, and no EPs, you're in trouble.

If they teach you better at your top 10 MS then they teach the rest of us then it should be reflected in your Step 1 scores.

Don't worry about grades...worry about clinical skill.
